IMO that had alot to do with the run and shoot also. That years defense had been wicked up to that point.
it's amazing to me that an offense that puts up 5 TD's gets blamed for losing. i remember hearing that during the Bills game and during the run 'n' shoot era. "well, if we just had another offense,we could run out the clock!!" ummmm..how about if your defense can manage to hold the other team to under 38 points? how 'bout they don't give up 4 TD's in one quarter?
Is this making reference to Buffalo? That was 41-38 and it was Jim Eddy's defense not Ryan's 4-6. Your right, that defense was killing teams too but Ryan's inglorious moment was the next year vs KC when Montana got the crap knocked out of him but still managed to dissect the 4-6 in the playoffs.
That wasn't Buddy Ryan's 4-6. That was Jim Eddy the year before. After that debacle, Eddy was fired and Buddy was hired and brought in the 4-6. Buddy's failure was making the wrong call in the playoff game against Montana's Chiefs in the 93-94 playoffs and allowing Marcus Allen to bust off a long game clinching run to knock us out again. That, and failing with that weak ass punch he threw at Gilbride.
It was actually 4 TD's -- the defense added a pick-6 at the beginning of the 3rd quarter to make it 35-3. The offense was criticized for not being able to stay on the field during the 2nd half. Every time the Bills scored, we answered with a quick 3-and-out. Just 1 drive with a few first downs that maybe took 7 or 8 minutes off the clock, and history might have been totally rewritten. Up to and including the Oilers never leaving...
The moment I had a feeling something "BAD" was about to happen was moments later, Reich passed to their TE and either Al Smith or another LB had an interception go RIGHT THROUGH THEIR HANDS and the TE made the catch for a 1st down. IF he picks off that ball....sigh
i hear ya...but the offense going 3 and out is soooo far down the list of problems when: 1. they scored 4 TD's (you're right about McDowell's INT for a TD) and 2. the defense only needs to prevent the most monumental comeback in NFL history. one stop and the game is entirely different.
you know what..that's exactly right! great call on that. i was SURE we were Super Bowl bound when he scored that TD off the INT. absolutely sure of it.
