I have lived in 10 major cities at a minimum. Chicago and NY had a better downtown and more "culture" than Houston, but little else... honestly the food in Houston was actually better. As far as beautiful goes, I suppose it depends on what you consider beautiful. NY and Chicago and Philly and DC were not naturally beautiful at all. Also there is a difference between some place I would want to visit on vacation (NYC, London) and a place I would want to live (Houston, parts of France).
Then you don't want to live in a major European city either.... in fact, you don't want to live in a "city" at all.
No, generally, we do not want to live in a huge city. There are many smaller cities that would fit our lifestyle much better. Our ultimate goal is to have a place in the middle of nowhere Sweden and somewhere here in the states that we can split time at during the year. We would like something that is closer to a big city when we are in the US, most likely in the Pacific Northwest.

Nice. I spent a week camping and exploring the Swedish Norrland, a very beautiful but incredibly remote countryside. You have interesting taste.
So far we are looking mostly in the Dalarna area. I think the whole damn place looks like The Shire from Lord of the Rings and I love it. There are lots of lakes and of course the Dalälven River. It is very hilly and close to skiing in the winter. It's about 2 hours from where most of my wife's family lives which is a good distance. It's close enough to see each other often but far enough away so that we don't see them every day. I love her family but we are used to having out own time and space. Funnily enough this is requirement that my wife made. We are hoping that in the next 2-3 years we can buy something over there.
Also, my wife's sister's husband is from Kiruna. They have a place up there that they go to all the time as he is an avid hunter. Dude is the real deal too. You don't go hunting up there unless you are hardcore. I've yet to go up there but look forward to checking it out sometime.

Favorite Domestic (not necessarily cities per se): Poipu, HI - not for the city itself, but the surrounds Santa Cruz, CA - most odd/unique people per capita in the world by my estimation Lake Tahoe and outlying areas, CA/NV - great for nature lovers, plus casinos Los Angeles and outlying areas, CA - everyone hates it, for good reason, but if you want it you can most likely find it here The Triangle, NC - good food, beautiful area, college town atmosphere, friendly folk Favorite International: Jerusalem, Israel - most emotionally powerful city I have been to, it FEELS holy London, UK - fantastic city to live in, don't need a car, stuff to do everywhere, good hub for visiting other places in Europe Belfast, Northern Ireland - just had a better time there than in Dublin and I need something to represent the Emerald Isle Amsterdam, Netherlands - just a fun place to hang out for a few days, the most different experience I have had, drugs may have been a factor Tel Aviv, Israel - the Med, the nightlife, the food, the weather, it is great, like a whole other world compared to Jerusalem
US - been all over the place. I think the cities I liked the best were DC, Atlanta, and St. Paul. Houston is not exactly a great city, but it's home, so I love it. I've been to Japan quite a few times, and I've been to pretty much every city in Honshu with the exceptions of Osaka and Nara for some reason. Obviously, Tokyo is amazing.
I don't agree with that at all. There are plenty of cities in Europe that would fit my criteria. However, you are correct in the fact that I have no desire at all to live in a city. Also, someone already mentioned Vancouver. Seattle is another city that is clean, on the water and surrounded by nature. I am sure there are more cities in the US and Canada that are on par with Seattle and Vancouver.

....anybody else disappointed ToyCen's experiences wasn't a bit more....um....celestial? Master/Flikvan -- get out of town guys. I couldn't imagine living anywhere I really didn't like when there are so many incredible places about. Cost of living is manageable just about anywhere if it's what you want. My pick is San Fran. Almost moved to Tiburon years ago. Had the house picked out and was ready to make an offer -- wife wouldn't let me. Something about the sizable mortgage, not job and no work permit worried her.
Domestic Cities - I am not including Houston on this list, even though I love it, and it is home. It's not about money as we can afford to live anywhere we want. I have a 13 and 10 year old from my previous marriage. We have custody of my son and my ex wife has our daughter. When they turn 18 we are adios.
