3 out of 5! take away die hard and dark knight and add high fidelity and big lebowski for me and that can be my top 5 on any given day.
No harm done aghast... I love The Treasure of the Sierra Madre as well. As I mentioned in the OP, Bogart is a stone-cold pimp. And finalsbound, I'll second aghast's advice to you. Get on the Casablanca now. I can't say enough good things about it.
While I think Ed Norton has some of that "spoiled actor" thing, I can't really disagree with that list of actors. Daniel Day-Lewis specifically is appointment viewing (I don't think I used that phrase right, but you catch my drift). I get the feeling that Norton is too much of a control freak and that big directors don't want to work with him (or vice versa). The Hulk aside, he hasn't done a big movie in a while, right? Since that one with Charlize Theron and all the mini-coopers? Oh, I just remembered a GLARING ommission, speaking of Ed Norton... 25th Hour. For the record, I disagree with all you Bale haters... I hear that in The Fighter, which comes out this month, he just kills it.
Well, these are my undisputed top three: Brazil Jaws Empire Strikes Back After that there's a bunch at about the same level. Fargo and Mulholland Drive are the first two I can think of.
I'm glad someone else has Brazil in their top 5. Number 1 & 2 are set. The rest kind of change from time to time. 1. This is Spinal Tap 2. Blue Velvet 3. Brazil 4. Bottle Rocket 5. Toss up between the Marx Brothers A Night at the Opera, Animal Crackers, Horse Feathers, Monkey Business, Cocoanuts. It's hard to leave off, great films like Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, The Adventures of Robin Hood, A Face in the Crowd, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, Monty Python and the Holy Grail/Life of Brian etc.
1. Gladiator (Can't tell you how many times I've seen this) 2. Star Wars (Empire Strikes back, again watched this countless times) 3. The Matrix (Too bad they ruined the series, tried to complicate it too much, would have liked to see a humans controlling the machines, would have been a good twist in the end) 4. Die Hard (Bruce Willis defined badass) 5. Braveheart / Meet the Parents
1. Saving Private Ryan--because it was the first that REALLY showed how brutal the battles of WWII were. 2. The Fellowship of the Ring -- I knew if they treated that story right it would be one of the great movie experiences of my lifetime. They did and I was right. 3. The Shawshank Redemption -- I do not remember ever feeling as uplifted at the end of a movie as I did at the end of this classic. 4. Downfall -- Because I am fascinated with Hitler's final days and the performance of Bruno Ganz was amazing. 5. Scarface -- I remember leaving the theatre (yes i'm old enough to have seen it in the theatre when it came out) in a daze.
I'm super keen on numbers 3, 4 and 5. Especially The Virgin Suicides. Sofia Coppola has to be my favorite director. She's really hot as well.
Just wanted to say again... this board is f'ing awesome. There's not one movie in this whole thread that made me think, "they don't know what they're talking about. That movie sucked." We are NOT just a collection of dumb sports fans are we?
