I like sci fi better than action but please don't compare fifth element to die hard. Die hard is the perfect action movie.

We're running to the dictionary now? I like dictionaries and all, but their authority only goes so far. I'd call that a space movie and reserve the term science fiction for stuff with actual artistic merit.

    Haha, good grief.

    "Space Movie"

    This is silly. I'm out.

Sci-Fi is a term reserved for high brow flicks.

Heh, told you. There are some people who think that Sci-Fi movies have to be boring and extreme views like that aren't one's that are changeable.

There are honestly people who don't think 'Edge of Tomorrow' is a science fiction movie? Really?

Guess I need to re-think my definition of sci-fi...

I wasn't comparing how good they are...that's obviously without debate.

This whole thing is a bit ridiculous. Edge of Tomorrow is definitely a sci-fi...doesn't have to be particular deep or though provoking. Sci-fi can come in many forms.

It has to be something as thought provoking as "Sharknado" to be real sci fi

Alien invasion, time travel, futuristic weapons/aircraft, bizarre aliens... typical action movie.

I think he is just trolling us because it is obviously not a remake of Groundhog Day and it is definitely a science fiction movie. So many movies use the same premise and are not remakes. Think how many movies have a daughter kidnapped and the father will do anything to get her back. They are not remakes. His arguments are quite a stretch. Nice try though. The trolling worked for a while ha.

IMDB even has it listed as Action Sci-Fi

I actually agree about Die Hard, and will add that The Fifth Element is pretty close to being a perfect science fiction film.

RR, I kill replicants, with an exception here and there. Does anyone seriously think I'm going to bump myself off?

NO! You dolt! If you take all the major plot elements of the Fifth Element out all you are left with is Bruce Willis shooting up bad guys to save a hot chick. Duh, it's an action film not sci fi!

    Good grief!

The Day the Earth Stood Still or 2001 shouldn't be considered the range for scifi: they are the benchmarks for quality. I think Pitch Black or Terminator, although heavy on action, are also scifi.

I used to read literature from the 1920s like Amazing Stories which were filled with lowbrow science fiction adventures. There were movies from the 50s and 60s which would be very cheesy today, but they were definitely science fiction. Not all scifi is philosophical and grand like Gattaca, Blade Runner, or the Matrix.

Because of CGI and games, exo suits, aliens and massive ships are easy to do and appealing. They just bung those things in a movie to draw in an audience.

    Agreed.
I think more based in Scientific Realities or possibilities

    i.e.
    Hobbit - Fantasy
Star Wars = Sci Fi - but I have heard some describe it as future fantasy [mainly be cause the jedi/sith not being scientifically based - at least not befor ethe new movies or some such]

If you place your movie in the future .. is it automatically Sci Fi?
seems to be the question . .. does Sci Fi elements make a movie Sci Fi
I think yes. . .others think no

Actual Sci Fi is dying off. Not enough explosions to justify the price of the special effects.

I thought CGI was suppose to take care of the price or bring it down

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot cost 14 million (just the pilot) and some new Marvel show that will be on Netflix has a 200 million dollar budget.
