With the reviews I had lowish expectations even though I loved Drive. It ended up being pretty damn good but I can see why it didn't work for many. Brutal and highly stylistic.

Oh thank the lord, I love you guys!!!! This is an experimental film and very similar to the Director's earlier work/ preferably Bronson.

I liked it. Style is similar to Valhalla Rising...which I also liked.
Don't expect it to be like Drive.

    ****tiest movie of the year.

You don't publish and distribute your experiment. Especially if it doesn't work.

It's okay, you just didn't get it. Let me guess, Drive was the only film you saw by this director? You don't watch a lot of films do you? I bet you watch more mainstream movies with a positive score on rotten tomatoes than a film outside of its radar with low ratings.

i don't think it was as bad as everybody's saying. additionally, i thought Drive was way worse than consensus opinion.

Who are you to tell an artist what he can or cannot create???

If you don't "publish and distribute your experiment" we would be without 2001 Space Odyssey, Scott Pilgrim, Punch Drunk Love, Pulp Fiction, Enter the Void, Eraserhead, Pi, so many great films were experimental in one way or another. You have contemporary directors like Michel Gondry or Spike Jonze to classic past directors like Alejandro Jodorowsky or Federico Fellini whose resumes are majority experimental, advent-garde films.

You will watch "El Topo" and think "WTF DID I JUST WATCH" but that very same film inspired hundreds of mainstream, highly successful movie makers still living today that'd swear up and down they wouldn't be the same have not seeing these experiments.

Just because it doesn't work for you doesn't mean "it doesn't work".
(not a personal attack to you, tallanvor, rather the majority of the side I hear that totes that mind set)

My OPINION on the film itself, it's great. I can clearly see why many wouldn't like it. But that's because it either isn't what they're looking for in a movie - or they don't know what to be looking for in this particular one. Simple as that.

What's great about "Only God Forgives" is that it tells a story without spoon feeding the story to you. Gives room for interpretation on top of what's given to the audience on the surface. There's a difference in this 'experiment' from some film school students experiment because Refn actually knows what he's doing. Some may not be able to read the difference just like I'll never understand why certain foodie buffs will hold a $200 gourmet dish from some renown chef to such high regards when I can't find it to be any better/different than getting the same type of dish for $25 elsewhere.

I had to watch it twice, but I noticed that the strength in the story isn't what Refn showed on the screen as opposed to what he didn't show. The story thickens off screen by taking in the context and imagery.

This sh-t was awesome!!!! This was cinema distilled to it's purist form. A hypnotic melody of sound and images. A violent, brutal and beautiful silent color film. A much needed palate cleanser from all the loud cornball dialogue summer films.

The story was a standard revenge crime film but with minimal dialogue. I myself can handle it and in some cases prefer it this way. But if you like Tyrese and Ludicrous faux funny back and forth talking, then this is not the movie for you.

It's probably the closest thing we're gonna get to David Lynch until he stops hanging with LA hipsters and makes a movie.

People complaining about OGF remind me of the people who complained about Drive not being like The Fast and the Furious.

My date hated it by the way.

anyone who declares this the ****tiest movie of the year obviously contributed to the $100,000,000+ box office receipts to Grown-Ups 2.

just like Drive, the posters in this thread have piqued my interest for Refn's latest...
