A little of both. He's kind of a known commodity abroad. I'll give you the box office data not adjusted to inflation.

Film Cost/US Box/Global Cumulative in millions.

    The Last Airbender - $150/$132/$325
    The Happening - $48/$65/$165
Lady in the Water - $70/$42/$72
    The Villiage - $60/$114/$260
    Signs - $72/$230/$410
    Unbreakable - $75/$95/$250
    Sithe Sense - $40/$300/$675

Bottom line his movies make they're money back. Add ancillary revenue from home video, cable, streaming etc... and he more than makes back the studios investment.

After Earth will probably do ok here in the US. Will Smith has a devoted fanbase. But it will make a killing abroad because international audiences love stupid heavy sfx driven films more so than 'merica.

In Synthesis, expect more M Night,Smith and his disgusting entitled brat in future films.

Right on point. How does this guy keep getting job offers? I felt the premise of the movie could've worked to at least be a fun summer flick but man the direction Shyamalan took this film was turrible.

It was a fun movie. I don't know what you were expecting, a critical masterpiece? It was just a good ole fashioned fun movie from start to finish.

I also think they left enough open at the end that if it banks well there could be a sequel.

Just saw it. 1/10... just as expected from a Schmaylamaylaman movie.

I'll save y'all the time and money. Basically it's all just a dream and then Will Smith starts singing "wild wild west" and "jiggy with it" while dancing with other dudes.

People keep blaming m night when will smith gets a pass. He hired m night and then I heard will smith had as much input in the movie as anyone. Isnt the movie a lot about scientology? This guy is somewhat souring his reputation by forcing his completely unlikable kids onto us.

I am a big fan of M Nights movies, but I didn't watch last airbender and won't see this one either.

I do happen to think he made 2 of the greatest films in the last 25 years though in Signs and Sixth Sense. I really just don't understand why they don't let him just do what he wants to do, because it is clear these forced projects suck bad.

^^ agreed. Signs is one of my favorite movies ever, it's sad that all of his recent movies have been garbage.

For comparison Battleship started at about 8.8 mil on its first day

FWIW, Now You See Me did make more even at a little less than 500 theaters compared to After Earth

Not sure what you expected from NYSM, it was a fun and entertaining movie, hope your not one of those moviegoers that thought it was "unrealistic", if that's the case, stick to Indie movies...

From what I read, The Fresh Prince directed this as much as MNS. The story is Smith's idea and Jaden was his special little actor to cast.

Night is at his best when he is creating suspenseful films with outlandish plot lines. Of course, you have to expect with every M film, there is going to be a certain amount of undigestible brow beating, that just goes with the territory, sort of like how QT turns every subject he deals with into a revenge film.

he shouldn't have agreed to directing movies like this and avatar because it is just tarnishing his reputation and will hinder him from directing jobs in the future. I think this is all Fresh Prince's fault in his lame attempt to create a spot for his son, who seems to have a very bleak future in acting.

Will Smith will spend a fortune to no avail, but he probably feels it is his duty as a father no matter how flawed this sort of logic is.

He got to do what he wanted with The Village (which I still liked), Lady in the Water and The Happening, and those were panned. And I think one of his bigger criticisms was that his plots were predictable in that they always had to have a twist. So he tries to break out of that mold and he still fails with Avatar and After Earth. 5 duds in a row...plenty of second chances...at some point you gotta say enough is enough. Maybe he should try his hand at TV or something.
