Somewhat surprised that Skyfall wasn't nominated for Best Picture. If this Bond film can't get nominated, then there will never be one.
I agree with the nominations, along with Affleck getting snubbed. Argo was fantastic. Silver Linings Playbook is great, underrated by the public, but at least getting some Oscar love. Didn't think the mom, Jacki Weaver, deserved the nomination, but the other 3 did (Cooper/De Niro/Lawrence). Looking forward to Zero Dark Thirty this weekend, I may catch Life of Pi eventually along with Flight.
Silver Lining was really good, I enjoyed it, also surprised Weaver got a nom, not the other 3. Don't go into Zero Dark Thirty expecting an action movie, it's not. Still need to see Flight, totally uninterested by the trailers when it came out.
Man...I really hope Lincoln doesn't just run away with all the awards it's nominated for just because it's Spielberg and Lincoln and whatnot. Great movie...but it wasn't spectacular by any stretch. I mean...to be honest...it was largely boring. Daniel Day Lewis would be very deserving of Best Actor though.
To be honest, I'd be okay with "Lincoln" winning. Spielberg did a decent job with it. I just saw "Zero Hype Thirty". Good movie but not great. The raid in Abbatabad = great. The rest of the movie? If the director has been a man---and I'm no sexist----it would've been better. I would've framed the movie with the Seal Team Six training for their mission (15 minutes at the beginning, 15 in the middle, finish the movie of course with the raid). And cut 30 minutes of Jessica Chastain's story. Sorry, but a female director with her female protagonist = saying the word "mother****er" in front of Leon Panetta in order to say "hey, I have balls". Good movie, but NOT the best of the year. I liken it to Mitt Romney. You get everyone to talk it up so everyone thinks he can't lose. Then when the time arrives, falls a bit flat.
Yes, because while the studios should be credited for globalizing the industry with more comic book, action, animated features and a revitalized horror genre; they've also stopped funding good dramatic stories. Oscars financially incentivize paying big stars to work with good dramatic directors and writers. The ceremony itself probably saves the studios on promotional budgets and boosts DVD sales for ostensibly non-commercial films. What's more I don't know if summer movies commercially appeal or are even targeted to most people outside of the 13 - 34 age group; so the Oscars and the fall film season are good ways to retain older consumers.
Man, it's upsetting that Leo didn't get nominated for Django. I really want that dude to get his, but Cristoph Waltz did a great job.
glad Anne finally gained some of that weight back. She was somewhat appalling when she was super skinny.
I found it riveting from beginning to end, and it was thanks in large part to the great performances. Brave winning was surprising. It was good but not anywhere near Pixar's best work.
