There was nothing good or great about Lincoln except for the acting. Spielberg bought himself another nominees. There was nothing special about directing Lincoln. 99% of the time they just sat around and yap.
"Les Mis" was good but is very overrated. Overall I don't have a problem with the nominees except "Les Mis" for best picture. I'd give that movie a 7 out of 10, maybe. Bigelow was probably snubbed, but oh well. And for those who think "Lincoln" was garbage, what?, you didn't know going into the theater it would be a talky movie about 1860s politics? I loved it, but then again, I love history and good acting. And you know Academy voters---avg. age, 62---would love it. When I went to see it, I might have been the only non-gray-hair in the audience (aside from my wife).
I think The Master had some of the best performances of the year, glad to see the 3 leads get nods. Phoenix was just something else in that film. I agree with you about Les Mis, it's a solid film but not great. Agree with you about Lincoln, I'm not sure what kind of directorial showiness would have been expected? I thought it was well done across the board with impressive performances. Zero Dark Thirty I can see causing some issue with movie goers, since it's being advertised with an emphasis on the raid which is only about 30 mins of the film. That being said, it's an impressive film on various fronts, I found it incredibly intriguing.
Now we gotta wait years to see DDL again....Lincoln..pfft...what a waste of a rare chance to see him act....
I too saw none of these movies, as well. Granted, there wasn't a lot of fighting/action scenes in the trailers, either, but for someone who didn't study the trailers in great depth, would it not be odd to expect maybe some civil war action? Yes, instead of watching movies and deciding after seeing them who did the best direction job, let's just decide before hand because Person A can't possibly be as good as Person B.
Does anybody really still care about the Oscars? Such a worthless, broken system now (kind of like the Baseball Hall of Fame). Way too many snubs and head-scratching decisions. When The Artist won last year....that was just pathetic...
To each their own, but immediately after I saw The Artist I knew it was going to win best picture. Best movie I've seen in the last few years.
Y'all are nitpicking. Lincoln was great. Life of Pi was awesome too. I liked Argo but would place it behind those two. Les Mis wasn't that good but Hugh Jackman carried the movie. Just be thankful it's not like the Grammies where Justin Bieber sweeps all the awards.
The Oscars are a freaking joke. How did the Master not get nominated for Best Picture when it was easily the best film of the year? Glad that Beasts got some recognition, but some of this is ridiculous. Ugh, Lincoln was okay but underwhelming (carried by great acting performances). Spielberg is a good director but doesn't deserve it this year.
Argo was fantastic. If a film about something I already know the outcome of gets me that excited then it was directed beautifully. I thought Leo deserved a nomination, his performance was great in Django. Also was hoping Bryan Cranston would get a nomination for his role in Argo, but they gave it to Alan Arkin, what a surprise.
