I would agree, if Sumlin can take Cincy to BCS his value goes way up. I think UH may have to start looking for a new coach. *Crosses fingers that they don't.
I agree. I also think some of the luster is wearing off with his poor finish and the lack of defensive improvements. He takes more risk with another year at UH than by going to a ready made Cinci situation.
a Big Ten School? the big ten is garbage and he's going to be set for failure in a place he can't recruit and a team that got hot for ONE season. I bet when Stoops leaves Oklahoma Sumlin will get a call but for Cincinnati? It's a basketball school.
i hit on this earlier. UC is a basketball school, but it could very easily become a football school. i cant say it enough, in SW ohio, football is king. if kelly would have stuck around, UC football would have became king. heck, it might have already been. with the bengals success and UC's success, it was on that path. this is why if UC football wants to continue to the top, they need to hire a good coach.
He's bringing in better recruits than we've had in quite some time. Griffin has 3 years of eligiblity left. We'll make some noise in the future assuming he stays healthy.
What's frustrating is that every time UH has a really good year, you can pretty much bet the coach is gone the following year. How can you build stability and a winning mentality with such high turnover? Hopefully that's not the case with Sumlin. From one of the articles I read on the chron today, he seemed genuinely excited about next season. But who knows once money and egos enter the situation. And it really sickens me, on a whole, that absolutely zero loyalty exists in college football and contracts mean nothing. Makes me wonder if college football moved to a playoff system (where the Boise States and TCUs of the world had a legitimate shot at a championship), would head coaches be so "trigger happy" to leave for a marquee program.
Tough decision. But he should go get into a BCS conference if you have a chance... But the Kansas job is better he should be beg to get an interview there...
Sumlin's not going anywhere....... We'll hear about an extension soon. The Houston area is tops in recruiting with plenty of talent for us. Sumlin is already starting to mine that and is about to get a new stadium.
Cinci is coming off of back to back BCS births and the past two coaches have parlayed the gig into bigger jobs. The most recent coach just got one of the most prestigious jobs in college football. They've got a stud quarterback in waiting. Why wouldn't you at least give it a very strong look, especially if they're willing to give you a healthy raise?
Cincy isn't going to be anybody's dream job. But it's going to be easier to parlay the Cincy job into a dream job than it is going to be at UH. It sucks, but until the landscape of college football changes, it's going to be hard for successful non-BCS schools to keep their coaches. Props to Boise St. and TCU for holding on to Chris Petersen and Gary Patterson thus far.
Classy guy. Put the hammer down quick. No protracted drama or BS. Statement from University of Houston head football coach Kevin Sumlin concerning the University of Cincinnati and its head football coach opening: “After speaking with representatives with the University of Cincinnati yesterday and today, I declined an interview. I am looking forward to our first bowl practice later this afternoon and later honoring our seniors at the football banquet tonight.”
See, Cincy is no step up from what he can build here. Texas and the Houston Area has sooo much talent that even if he has to compete with Texas, Oklahoma and Tech he'll still have a shot grabbing some great talent. not the case if he goes to the little east.
That's pretty awesome. I'm with Donny, nothing protracted and no drama. Plenty and plenty of Houston talent that will want to stay home now. Hopefully some of that will be Defensive talent because we'll need it.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4737118 Houston coach Kevin Sumlin has declined an interview request for the vacant Cincinnati job. "After speaking with representatives with the University of Cincinnati yesterday and today, I declined an interview," he said in a statement. "I am looking forward to our first bowl practice later this afternoon and later honoring our seniors at the football banquet tonight." The Bearcats are in the midst of leadership change after former coach Brian Kelly left the program for Notre Dame on Thursday. Kelly posted a 34-6 record in three years at the school and has guided Cincinnati to consecutive BCS bowl appearances in the past two seasons. Sumlin, who took the Houston job in 2008, came to the Cougars after a five-year stint as an Oklahoma offensive assistant under Bob Stoops. The Cougars are 18-8 under Sumlin and will play Air Force in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 31.
Good move. First Cincy is no freaking big move up, Sumlin wants to make it to the top. No reason to take another temp position that people are leaving. Second, he wants to really achieve something in Houston first. Being ranked for a while is not really a fundamental change.
