I remember when I lived in Cleveland and Mark Price had his rookie year - he felt that he had played poorly and might not be NBA caliber. He continued to improve and became an All-Star. I think with the right off-season work ethic that Head and Hayes can both improve their strengths, correct some deficiencies and become better team contributors. The eventual level of that contribution is still to be determined.

    I like both of them.

But one point made here about playing time - it was obvious for both of them that early on in their games/minutes played that they both were like deer in headlights about certain things. Chuck had no idea how to integrate himself into the offense, and Luther was almost as clueless. Luther was not driving to the hoop for a long time.

It takes time to learn to adjust to your own team, the other team, and how to get into proper position either scoring or defending. Look at Yao - the light bulb has gone off - and wow! But it is his 4th season!

Both seemed to have learned a lot about how to better contribute and they both have a ways to go. They both have skills - esp. speed - that is missing from some of their older teammates - speed that cannot be replaced in the older players.

Barkely wasn't a great rebounder just because he could jump high. Four of his top six rebounding seasons (by rebound rate) were when he was with the Houston Rockets and not in great physical shape at all. You don't need to have great athleticism to be a superior rebounder.

You are crazy if you think Hayes has or will have a bigger impact than Head. Luther has and will make big shots in the future for the rockets. He gets steals and plays hard....your just a hater.

    Head's shooting numbers by month:

    Month - 2FG, 3FG

    Nov - 39, 48
    Dec - 35, 31
    Jan - 37, 29
    Feb - 41, 34
    Mar - 44, 37
    Apr - 47, 42

Clearly, you are right. His numbers were only good the first five games and have gone down ever since. Bravo.

That's a good point. Bill Laimbeer was even less athletic, but it didn't stop him from being a rebound (defensive rebounding in particular) ace with the Bad Boys.

Isn't it worth noting that he got to the line because he crashed the offensive boards. I mean, replace Hayes with just an average rebounder and we probably wouldn't have even gotten that rebound and had a chance to go ahead.

    Durvasa,

Difference between Rodman and Hayes is that Rodman could have achieved those number in 48 minutes. Hayes would have fouled out, according to your numbers, before he reached his 48 mpg potential.

But I like Hayes, too. He should start, IF we get some jump shooting assistance next year. Offense with Stromile and Howard off the bench.

i don't think hayes will want to come back. even if we give him a contract higher than the others.... who wouldn't if u were out of the rotation even when your better than those two? so.. if he doesn't come back.. we can blame jvg!!!! (jk... i'm not a jvg hater)

Though it should be noted that Hayes would eventually draw less fouls per 48 merely from no longer being a rook in the refs' eyes. Most rookies have a big target painted on them all year.

seems like u never watch the game.. I've seen him a number of times waste fastbreaks by faking a pass then going up and getting blocked by a person or by the rim.. he cant make right choices.. and u said he is undersized at the 2 but could be a good defender, well, Ryan Bowen is undersized for PFs and plays great D and hustles, does that make him a good player who we should take time working on his shot ?? no... to be in the NBA, u need to have a certain level of fundamentals.. Head needs to improve his shooting, passing, handling, and TO's inorder for him to stay in the team... but I dont think he can work on all of these because if he didn't learn 'em in college, he'll never learn them in the NBA..

actually, you are crazy if you think Head has a bigger impact on the game than Chuck.. Luther made that one dang lucky shot and everybody thought that he is a CLUTCH ROOKIE and stuff like that ..did u know that the 3 he hit in GS was his only 3 points of the game.. if he played well the whole game (less TO's, hit a single dang wide open shot), we would've won by 10 instead of going to the last second and barely beating them... and I am not a hater or anything, I just think that Head is not a below average NBA player and he needs to work on a lot of stuff to improve and have a positive impact on the game.. and talking about getting steals and playing hard, Rybo does it better that anybody.. why not play him???
and one more thing, u r saying that Chuck doesn't have a significant impact on the game, and let me guess, u got mad because he missed 2 free-throws at the end of the game .. but do u know that if we didn't play him in that game at all and we had JHO instead, JHO could've hit both FT but we would've been down by 14 or 15.. and I got these numbers just by a simple math work by subtracting Chuck's rebs and Pts...

He had a quiet night. Made a couple nice plays to end the first half. Didn't do much in the fourth quarter.

Rocketsmac, are u anyway related to Chuck Hayes?

If you've watched much of this season's games, Luther has came up huge when it counts. None of that discounts Chucky's additions, but Head is not trash in anyway shape or form.
