I love this board. I now have another word to add to my vocabulary -- stressure, i.e. stress and pressure in one lump. Keep the English language evolving, BibBen3. Good job.
As far as "JVG should bring this up to Juwan", it's not that simple. Offensive rebounding takes a bunch of (a) moxy and (b) quickness & bounce. Juwan physically can not get to the spots and around box outs quick enough. On defense, rebounding is much more about technique (position and boxing out), which is more reasonable for Juwan. Chuck Hayes is fantastic force - I loved watching him play last night. Evan
Not if he has a clear path layup. He just needs to spend a lot of time practicing his layups and tap ins.
I almost hurt myself laughing. To the thread starter, Chuck has something called rebounding instincts. Some players have it, some don't. Players like Rodman, Chuck and Sura demonstrate rebounding instincts are more important than hops or height.
No way, I like him staying within himself and cutting to the basket...we have enough players content to shoot jumpers... DD
I just hope we dont lose him next year. Sometimes wonder about signing J L 3 for 3 years and not locking up Chuck! Who gives a damn about his height- this guy has the heart.
Man, I love this guy. He's a -very- special kind of player, especially in the highlight reel, shoot first NBA. He specializes in defence and rebounds. If you are good enough at that, you do get your kudos in the end like Rodman and Wallace. I think he's got the potential to be up there with these guys. Go Truck Hayes!!!
Chuck Hayes has been huge for this team. And it is QUITE apparent when he is NOT on the floor. Hayes needs to see as much court time as possible. And to do that he has to continue to work on decreasing his fouling. Also, JVG needs to have more faith in Chuck LATE in games. I think at times JVG goes back to his stubborn substitution patterns and plays Chuck to start the game and then in the 3rd, but when he goes to sit down, a lot of times he is sitting until the end. I think JVG is afraid of Chuck's shooting shortcommings late in the game and we see the smallball lineup of Alston/Head/Tmac/Battier/Yao. Like last night against the Wolves I want to see Head/Tmac/Battier/Hayes/Yao to finish the games. Hayes might not be able to shoot well, but he passes well, moves the ball and is a good cutter with good hands to catch passes when he dives down to the basket. To me that is worth more than having another small ball guard on the floor.
The instinct that Chuck has is to keep moving and looking for space when the shot goes up. If he is bad position and being boxed out he moves quickly to an open spot by the basket. If he is in good position he looks around for someone to seal off. If he keeps racking up minutes, just his positioning on the floor is going to get Yao an extra 2 boards a game and make Yao a consistent double figure rebounder. The guy is great. He's either or best or 2nd best defender and he stayed out of foul trouble guarding Garnett. Garnett got his but Hayes disrupted everything that Minny was trying to do with his ability to play tough on Garnett and slide over and help everybody else.
I think it is a particular aspect of Chuck's shooting that is keeping him off the court late in games... Free Throws. If he is in there in a close game, it's pretty much a no brainer who to foul if the other team misses the shot, and it's not going to be hard to get to him since more than likely he will be the one rebounding the ball.
Fair point, but do that in the last 1-2 minutes. With 5 minutes to go in the game have him on the court to get us to the point where we are in good shape with 1-2 minutes to go. The problem is he wasn't seeing ANY 4th quarter time or the last part of the 4th quarter. And when we need that ENERGY he isn't in there. We have Howard bricking shots instead or small-ball guards.
Chuck's weakness has always been his shooting.. all through college I would yell at the television for someone to teach him to shoot free throws without that d**n hitch at the end. (made me wanna head to Lexington and show him how to shoot them like I did my kids when I was a coach) Hopefully with the coaches he has now they can figure out a way to make him more comfortable at the line and shooting more than two feet from the basket. If you want to know the truth, his shot has actually improved marginally from the line. But he still has a ways to go. As for his blown layups, I am sure he will focus on those and they shouldn't be a problem as the season progresses. Especially after Tmac giving him a hard time about blowing at least one a game. In his defense most of the ones he missed last night were because Garnett came hard at him. Won't have that force coming at him in every game. His rebounding, well, that speaks for itself. As long as he's healthy he plays a rebound the same way.
Did Ben Wallace or Dennis ever learn how to shoot? You take the bad with the good, and the good outweigh the bad easily. Chuck is the perfect complement to Yao, as long as Yao is here, Chuck will have a job.
maybe the new "numbers" gm had a role in this... last years numbers would have said bench Jho and start Chuckie... Jho on the floor last year was atleast 2 fouls on Yao
he is a smart guy he did not loose any brain cells being an athlethic freak, see Stro he knew what he had to improve to get better, he could focus more on specific things he can do.... Hayes wants to learn and we all can see how mad he is at himself making a mistake on the court.... hard work will make him a great player I love Chucky Hayes
