This sucks, Hayes was important for our front court depth, we are actually pretty shallow considering Dorsey left (don't laugh, he started 20 games last year) Smith left Motie is coming off of surgery Howard has bad knee's Jones was injury riddled all last season (although his injuries where non specific) Capela hasn't played more then 30 games, he may just have been a flash in the pan Dekker, Harrell can and likely will be D-league bound the whole year Where one front court injury away from being in big trouble, Hayes could have helped plenty if one of our bigs where to go down for half the season again.
I disagree. A "win now" team (which we are) needs veteran leadership more than potential. Unproven young guys won't have a chance to play much on a team like the Rockets. Neither will old guys like Hayes. But the locker room values are like night and day. And we already have some talented young bigs in Jones, Motiejunas, and especially Capela. These guys need leadership and mentoring to help them flourish.
Chuck Hayes is a professional, but hardly a leader of men. Jason Terry will prove to be much more valuable in that aspect, so there's not much we are missing out on. I would much rather have the potential of Harrell's upside versus Hayes spotty minutes anyways.
Chuck Hayes isn't coaching anybody into being a defensive stalwart, so I'm not sure exactly what people thinks he brings to the table besides being a true consumate professional. That's a fantastic quality to bring.....to a team who's players are having trouble finding themselves. DMO is already flourishing with leadership and mentoring from outside of the league (Hakeem Olajuwon).
During our 22 game win streak, Daryl Morey was quoted as saying that Chuck Hayes was the leader of that team.
Um...Whhhhhhhut?! “So who did everyone consider the team’s leader during your 22-game winning streak?” I asked Daryl. “Probably Chuck Hayes,” Daryl said. http://grantland.com/features/the-unfortunate-tale-t-mac/
This is an excellent point and is why I wrote the below post. We could be adding another player or two over the next 4-5 days by trading for them in order to make another trade before the start of the regular season. And we have to maintain flexibility to sign Harrell to the tender or long-term deal if he agrees to it or possibly trade him.
Honestly, probably would have rather signed Hayes then Terry. We're so deep in the back court, having Terry and Thornton is a bit redundant, we have KJ who will starving for minutes, Bev will be wanting more minutes then he's getting, Dekker will also be waiting on his chance. Here's to hoping Morey's up to something bigger.
LOL. Even Daryl Morey knew calling Chuck Hayes the LEADER of a team consisting of TMac and Yao was a stretch. "Probably"......
Probably just opening up a roster spot for Wood. I don't know why people think Chuck Hayes would have been a difference maker....or even someone who would likely play at all, but it's pretty crazy.
And a leader of a streak? Never heard of that. Lol. If Yao and Tmac were healthy there is no way Hayes is ahead of them in leading that Rockets team.
Don't need a spot for Wood. He's already signed to a summer deal. They're giving Wood enough money to keep him stateside and play at RGV once they cut him. He has no chance of making this roster. But they want to get him to RGV and see how he develops this year. And we can have up to 20 on the roster until the regular season opens.
