Everyone says Shane is the best defender of this team. I would say Shane plays the smartest D but Chuck plays the toughest D.
On Chuck Hayes, I agree with Jonathan Feigen: [rquoter] Im sick of the Chuck HATING. His is one of the leaders on this team. He, Battier, and Scola set the tone for this team. That tone is defense and selflessness. Admittedly we all know Chuck isn't offensively inclined, but he's a good passer, a great post defender, and good guy in the locker room. Chuck has had a pretty banged up knee most of the season and played thru it. In a perfect world nobody wants Chuck as a starter, but I dont know any coach who wouldn't want a Chuck Hayes at his disposal. What do you think John? (Chuck is obviously limited in several ways and he has been playing hurt much of this season, but he also has his strengths, including uncanny defensive abilities, knowledge of the game, game plan and opponents and a sense of how to succeed. Many coaches and scouts see what he brings, but that is best when used for specific needs that fit his strengths, rather than as a full-time starter playing typical starter's minutes and particularly when playing out of position. -- Jonathan) Posted by: bigmilstead at April 3, 2010 02:43 PM [/rquoter]
I think he needs to really lose some weight to become more effective. When he came to the rockets he was skinnier. Then he got fatter. This season he started skinnier again (but not as when he started). But know he is back to fatter. For a guy who is reliable on his effort and not as athletic gifted he should stay skinny. i think it could only benefit his game.
How would losing weight benefit a guy who is defending much bigger guys down under the basket? Hayes just isn't very athletically gifted. He relies on his strength, positioning and center of gravity to fend off people around the basket. I think losing weight in Chuck's case provides no benefit. Losing weight surely won't help his offensive game and probably hurts him defensively as well.
When Chuck was at his best, he was a mobile defender with quick feet, impeccable timing, and a nose for the ball. The extra weight and bum knee (both contributing to the other, I imagine) takes away from those strengths. This notion that all Chuck is good for is post defense at the basket misplaces what his real strengths have been, IMO.
His knee is another factor, is it chronic, temporary? What? The organization has to do what is right for itself, and that may cost Chuck a year at $2.3 million. DD
i text my brother earlier this season and told him Chuck Hayes was my favortie Rocket.. he text me bak 'why'? and i told him cuz he epitomizes everything this team is about and he does all the unglorified things that flat out wins u games I love Chuck, I get critical on Chucks layups sometimes but I remind myself of how valuable he truly is.. we'd be on golden states level if he wasnt playin the reason why clutch game ending situations doesnt faze Chuck is because hes gone thru SOOO much jus to scrape his way into the league to show the NBA hes worthy to play on this level and no game situation can compare to that pressure
From what we've heard it's tendonitis... basically once the season is over and he can rest it and take anti-inflammatories the swelling will go down for good and he will be fine. It kicked up from overuse... not uncommon in basketball or volleyball players (I had it my senior year of high school)
i guess ill inform u since u havent a clue.. Chuck has been playing on one leg ALL season, his right knee is shot, weight is not the issue hes gnashing his teeth 2gether and playing thru pain for the team, now thats a guy i can respect losing weight isnt the answer hes always had lateral quickness at this similar size.. same scenario for Garnett theyre both draggin their leg around like Bullard said, thats why Scola killed KG.. Chuck is gona be 100% next season and you'll see the old quick Chuck
Chuck Hayes the real Intangibles, glue guy, heart soul of the team There's an imposter and he will stunt C-bud's potential. We need to get rid of him.
I get what you're saying. I don't see Chuck as any less mobile due to his weight, though. Whether or not his weight has contributed to his knee issues, we'll have to wait and see. I had tendinitis in both my knees running track in highschool. I was about 138 lbs soaking wet then and dropping weight was going to fix my problems. I guess I was taking exception to the fact that Chuck is being called out as fat and should go back to being skinny. A) Chuck is not fat. B) Being "skinny" seems to run counter to his game in my eyes. His weight doesn't affect his passing ability or vision. He's not an acrobatic high-flyer. He's the "Chuckwagon". Not exactly a description that conjures up the image of a skinny dude.
That was an interesting take on why Chuck appears to do very well under pressure. To be sure, if I needed a defender on a player going for a game-winning shot, Hayes would the one whom almost any coach would trust. He simply doe not panic. Still, for all reasons discussed above, Hayes is just not playing (or moving) at the same level (defensively and offensively) as he was earlier in the season. I fault Chuck Hayes during games, but it is really not his fault that he is playing out of position. I just think that we only a few games and really nothing worthwhile to fight for, Hill should be getting the nod at center. Hill has done well from the bench. Let's see what he got as a starter.
ok. i was trying to be nice about it. i like chuck. he is fat, smooth. he has had moments of leaning out but i believe he carries too much fat weight. he should lose fat. get leaner. more muscle if you want to keep weight up is fine but the fatness has to go. that would better benefit his game yes?
and i'm not saying this to be nagetive. he just appears to be fatter this year.....after starting off leaner(and maybe lighter, i don't know). maybe the knee injury has effected his ability to work out as is his normal routine. i don't know. i would say the same for a guy like "big baby" davis. a leaner version of him could improve his game...maybe quicker...make less body stress?
I didn't think you were being negative towards Chuck, just not sure I agree with you about the weight thing. Chuck could probably lean up some, but he's not in the same class as Davis in terms of size and body fat.
Would you be surprised though if they did not excercise their option and mentioned the knee issue? I wouldn't. DD
