This is sort of a kneejerk thread seeing as we have been manhandled on the boards too often recently even with Luis Scola rebounding like a madman. I fear that Chuck Hayes' rebounding is regressing and I can't really see why. Has the guaranteed money got to him or is it simply a matchup problem where him playing out of position against bigger opponents affects his ability to rebound? Is the Adelman offense the culprit here, since Chuck seems to initiate the offense from high post quite often? Did Carl Landry take away some of Chucks boards? Or is playing without Yao affecting him that much on the boards? He hasn't been injured and agewise he should be entering his prime. Guess part of that is because now he has to battle the bigs while with Yao he can be more of an active rebounder.
yeah he needs to defend the bigs and boxes them out. that will leave scola or hill or some others to pick up the rebound.
I think it's been a combination of things: a) Playing against bigger opponents = less rebounds b) Playing against the team's go-to post scorer every night, pretty much every minute he's in the game (whereas in the past, depending on the player, Yao especially might take some time on the guy). Defending the shooter leaves you out of position for the rebound more often than not c) Playing more minutes more often (though not as much of late). More time = you can't go a million miles an hour and spend all your energy in 10 minutes on the court or whatever d) Fouls + Team's expectations of more minutes. For much of the season, he has known he would be playing more minutes...or could be called upon to do so. He therefore cannot be quite as aggressive. In toning down his foul-proneness that we had become accustomed to, I think that slight decrease in aggressiveness has shown itself in a lower rebounding rate. Even with a combo of all those things.. Chuck is still a solid rebounder.. and a STUD post defender. So I'm ok with it
I'm also curious to see what our team FG% is this year compared, to last. More made shots = less chances to rebound. Also, it's no hidden fact that our defense sucks this year compared to last. Thus, our opponents are shooting a higher percentage against us than last year, again resulting in less chances to get the board.
HTML: ORB% DRB% TRB% 14.9 24.1 19.6 13.8 21.1 17.5 9.6 20.8 15.3 10.5 23.0 17.0 10.3 19.8 14.8 Well, here are the rebounding percentages (from www.basketball-reference.com). I don't know the exact way they calculate this*, it says it's an estimate. However, it seems that the percentages have also dropped in a similar fashion. These drops in numbers don't seem that huge at a first glance but Chuck bringing very little stuff on the table at the offensive end forces him to excel in other areas. Can his suffocating defense alone keep him in the league ? Probably, but if he wants to get another multi-million dollar deal some day, he better keep contributing also elsewhere. Edit. Here it is: "TRB% = Total Rebound Percentage ; the formula is 100 * (TRB * (Tm MP / 5)) / (MP * (Tm TRB + Opp TRB)). Total rebound percentage is an estimate of the percentage of available rebounds a player grabbed while he was on the floor. "
Did Luis' RB% go up in proportion to Chuck's decline? I think the percentage factor is based on total rebounds collected by the team, divided by how many the individual player collected. Let's say that the Rockets collected 10 rebounds in the first period. Out of those 10, Chuck grabs 3, Luis grabs 3, and the other 4 are split evenly between Trevor, Martin, Ariza, Brooks, and Hill. The percentage would look like this: Luis 30% Chuck 30% Martin 10% Ariza 10% Brooks 10% Hill 10% Basically "I think" it's based on how you compare to your team mates.
Chuck Hayes' value is in playoff time as a defensive specialist depending on the match up and game situation. If Rockets want to be a true contender, they better keep him.
I would really like to know how many plays Hayes makes that actually lead to others rebounding, which is something that I'm sure Morey tracks. I recall him mentioning that Yao would box out so that others could get rebounds, which makes me certain that the players are aware of making such plays. Also, Hayes was bothered by tendinitis earlier this season and I'm sure that he's still feelings the effects of that. Bottom-line, I'm not so sure that his production has actually declined and think that looking at the matter superficially won't reveal the whole story. He's certainly not old or anything.
He's going against teams starting front lines now, which means better talent he is rebounding against. Add in that he has to defend the guy is shooting the ball more often, and on offense teams aren't spread out or doubling Yao right now, so that leaves more bodies in the paint to rebound.
I think it is largely a result of cumulative fatigue. And is it me, or does he not seem quite as trim as he was at the beginning of the season?
stfu scrub, dont pre-disrespect ppl b4 hand, if they wana speak on Bosh they have every right to.. alot of ppl bring up mcgrady in every thread so wtf is ur point? ibet ur one of those idiots who do that Chuck Hayes is fine, jus a scenario where the bigger C's are jus startin to take his toll on him, he can sustain overachieving at the C position for so long.. knee-jerk scrub
I have a gut feeling that Chuck is playing hurt. I think his knees are hurting right now. He was a beast on the boards early this season.
after all his years of hard work u question his value and heart after a season where he played 5 inches shorter than his man for 82 games with no help from Yao and he STILL is almost averaging 10 boards a game? get some perspective and understand what hes up against but im sure u dont understand any of those little things he do, ur simply looking at his numbers if AB played at that disadvantage EVERY game like chuck he'd get killed by the opposing PG's, but AB only gets killed every so often when he goes up against D-Will J-Kidd D-Rose C-Bill etc ya fake ass Darryl Morey
I think a lot of it is that Chuck may be a bit frustrated by his diminishing role. He is a smart man, he sees what is going on, and his time shrinking. Got to be a little frustrating. DD
Chuck isn't frustrated, he's tired. He's logged major minutes every damn night guarding guys who tower above him. That being said, I think the writing is on the wall and the paradigm shift spells the end for Chuck and Shane's Rocket careers sooner than later. Sad times.
Hayes' impact is huge. If they want to move away from putting Hayes on the other teams top PF for 12-15mpg next year in favor of... what? More running and gunning? Because that just works so well The Rockets are smarter than that, we need to recommit on defense.
