the texans made damn sure this decision wouldn't affect season ticket sales. they required a big deposit long before the draft. unless you're willing to walk away from that money entirely, you're not giving up your season tickets. given that, this doesn't make for much of a story.
No offense Max, but they do this EVERY SEASON....there's no dirty pool here. All football teams require payment for the next season right after the Superbowl.
Not a surprise. If you have season tickets, you have invested in the team, and more than likely support the MW pick. If this article said Texans merchandise sales have increased following the draft then yes I would be surprised.
Relatively minor in the grand scheme of things. Not that it's irrelevant, but it's roughly 1/12 the concern of an unsold ticket (average concession is $5, average ticket is $60). On-site parking is prepaid before the season.
seriously, The Cat, you seem to think people actually spend zero dollars on stuff when they go to games. i'm pretty sure they don't put it out there just to watch it go to waste each game. actually handing over $4 for a coke practically makes me have a simultaneous seizure/heart attack/aneurysm, but even i spend about $10 at a game (especially since they're usually 3 hours long and around the time you would usually eat a meal), and i'm guessing i'm on the low end. hell, they charge you five dollars just to smell the food. unless you have some study that says $5 is the average for concessions/souvenirs, i'm guessing it's higher. as for the Texans and money, it appears they have no motivation to win, as we will make them tons of money no matter how horrendous they are. which i guess is a good thing if casserly is your gm.
I was thinking the $10 per person on concessions was probably a bit conservative. The two games I have been to with my wife, together we spent an average of about $40-50...which I think is about normal.
Then I guess no team in the NFL has motivation to win (if this is how you judge them) since all teams are pretty much run the same way. Again, if the waiting list is 6,000 and growing, I can't imagine that a whole lot of fans are jumping ship and turning into Titan fans as some here predicted a couple of weeks ago.
OK.....I read it this way: in which it seemed like they were asking for money up front because people might get mad with their decision not to draft a backup QB for Carr with the #1 pick.
no. i think it's a very happy coincidence. i've had texans season tickets and remember having to put a deposit down on the next season pretty early.
Me... in fact, I usually spend under that. I know many, many others - in fact, most of the people I know who go to the games - who are the same way. F4P, if you guys spend $10 or so, that's fine... but it's offset by many others who spend nothing to around $4 or so.
which is offset by the others who spend around $50. seriously..if you eat AT the game...and judging by the people waiting in lines, a lot of people do...you can't get out of there for less than $10/person. i got a bratwurst and a coke at the astros game the other night. it cost me $11.
Those are typically pre-paid. But yeah, I guarantee you it averages at least $10 per person in concessions or merchandise at a Texan game.
As RM95 said, parking is prepaid. I disagree with the average cost being what you guys say it is. I never, ever eat at a sports game... unless it's dollar hot dog night for the 'Stros or something. I always think about how much I'd be spending for how little food and then go out to a real restaurant and get something good for that price immediately before or after the game. There are more people in that boat than I think you guys give credit for. Yes, there are lines for food... but there are also 70,000 people in the stadium. Not all of those people have to be in line to get a significant line. Regardless, it doesn't take away from the point. We'll do as RM95 says and average concessions at $10-$12 per person. Even if that's true, that makes ticket sales about 6 times more valuable (average ticket is upward of $60) than concessions. So, in the grand scheme of things... it's not much of a dent in the Texans' revenue. If you guys really think concession revenue is a factor or should be a factor in how the Texans draft, I'm not even sure what to say. All of this also is on the assumption that on average fans spend at least $10 on average, which we don't know and is a little hard for me to believe given the spending habits of myself and most of the people I go to games with.
It's probably just the people you go to games with. I generally spend around $20-$30 at a game. Usually, I'll get 2 beers and some kind of food. There are also lots of people buying t-shirts, souvenirs, programs, etc.... I would say $10 per person is a minimum average from my experience with people I see.
