This doesn't fix anything. Palmer was running the style of offense that Capers wanted. Palmer was not a conservative playcaller before he came to Houston. It's not going to be fixed until Casserly and Capers are both sent packing.
If he wants to come back. But even if he did I doubt he would want to join a team during the middle of the season. A coach on Jimmy Johnson's level would want a whole offseason and training camp to bring in his type of players and install his type off philosophy.
But at least now Capers has one less person to blame. Capers and Casserly are on their last leg and the best they can hope for is to make it until the end of the season.
I've never been a Jimmy Johnson fan.... but I'd take him in a heartbeat over Capers, and he's certainly a proven coach.
Yup, if anything this is bad new imo. Not that Palmer is all that great or anything, but this move signals that this is pretty much a tank season. The offense will not open up. The offense will continue to stink. The d will be mediocre on a good day. Let's say Capers opens it up on his own. Let's say the Texans play inspired football and win their last 4-5 games. Then it's possible that Capers gets a chance to tread water for yet another season. The only positive I see out of this is that Capers is getting what I hope is his final chance to sink or swim on his own.
Regardless of whether you think Carr is mediocre or great, I think there are more pressing needs on this team than a new QB.
With the #1 pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans select..... D'BRICKASHAW FERGUSON Had he come out after his junior season Ferguson likely would have gone either #2 or #3 overall, but he chose to return to school and is in line to be one of the premier prospects available in '06. A rare athlete for a man his size, Ferguson is a potential franchise left tackle whose name deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as guys like Tony Boselli, Jon Ogden and Orlando Pace. Strengths: A tremendous athlete for the position...Feet are second to none and he is like a dancing bear...Extremely quick and agile...Balance is outstanding...Has long arms...Has a good frame and can still get bigger...Smart player who is constantly improving...Still has a lot of upside...Is very durable...Has a ton of experience having started at left tackle since his true freshman season. Weaknesses: Began his career with the Cavs at 260 lbs. and has been doing a good job of adding weight but he needs to continue to get bigger and stronger...Still a bit undersized by pro standards and could get pushed around a little...Will he be able to maintain his mobility with the added pounds? Notes: May have gone as high as #2 or #3 overall in the 2005 NFL Draft had he come out after his junior season...The type of rare franchise left tackle that doesn't come around very often...Should be one of the premier prospects available. http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/ot/dbrickashawferguson.html
Hmmm, and repeat the same mistake over agin? Putting even a better talent like Leinart at QB solves nothing, you have to hope one of the tackle propects will be a franchise guy like Boselli was or Pace, Ogden or the guy in Seattle other wise you are destined to watch another highly picked highly paid draft picked get creamed for god knows how long. Left Tackle is the pick if any of the three or four prospects are even remotely talented enough to consider with the pick.
Couldn't the find a picture where the savior LT of the future didn't look like he was (almost) holding?!? Seriously, I thought the game against San Fran at the end of the year was going to possibly have playoff implications for the Texans... now it looks like it'll have draft pick implications. Sheesh, 4 LTs in 5 years for Carr... I feel for the guy. His growth has been seriously r****ded...errr stunted thanks to this lack of continuity.
Yeah, 275 yards passing against one of the best defenses in the nation in their house...Vince Young certainly does suck as a passer. I'll take McNeal's 110 yards passing against Clemson any day of the week.
Jay Cutler at the top of round 2. If anyone knows how to succeed with a bogus piece of crap O-line, its the Vanderbilt QB!!!
Makes no difference until we can cobble together an NFL-quality O-line. Carr may not be much more than average (he looked both awful and dim yesterday), but even Montana would have issues if his pocket collapsed inside of 3 seconds when only facing a 4 man rush. You can't open holes to allow runs, you can't protect for a passing game. Our O-Line is wretched. For that, I blame Casserly, who's failed to make significant moves to shore up that glaring weakness since he first rolled the dice on Bosselli. Fire Casserly. Our coaching staff has been poor in adapting the team to its strengths/weakness. I also think it's troubling that the players are showing less and less heart: . Makes you wonder if his terrible dropped pass (hit him dead in the hands) made for any lost sleep. I still have a sour taste in my mouth from when the team openly mailed in their finale last year at home (could have notched an 8-8 season against a seemingly hapless Browns squad). Teams take on the personality of their coach, and this team's personality belongs in kindergarten. At the end of the season, it's time for Capers and his staff to move on. I'm not taking Palmer's firing as a turning point. I don't believe we'll rally to get 9 wins on the season. I doubt we'll grab 8. But this serves notice to Capers. He's officially on the chopping block, and has 14 games to get his neck clear of the axe. Evan
