I see what you mean. I just felt it was odd for him to mention UT first.

You're exactly right. That in and of itself makes Texas a world renowned school.

Are you being facetious? That just happens to be my example.

There are a lot of smart fobs at UT so I believe gr8-1 when he says UT is world renowned.

I don't agree with his dissing of A&M though.

I believe him too, just maybe not to the same degree.

Hell, Edsger Dijkstra was a professor there, so I can certainly understand how it could be known to some people in other countries.

People in China (and many other countries) know of just about every major college in the US. All these colleges have international student departments that inform people overseas about the school in hopes of attracting them to the school.

When I was at A&M half the engineering department was Chinese...their families knew that they were at Texas A&M...so people in China knew about A&M. Well I'll be damned...we're world renowned too.

It's just like you to take one innocent comment from me to start to fan the flames.

Ian Mitchell-Smith, who played "Wyatt" in WEIRD SCIENCE (one of the best movies of all-time), is a prof at A&M. Don't sell them short.

Your implication was that Texas is well known while A&M is not. I was simply making a counterpoint. YOU were the one who ignited the flames. Don't play that game if you can't take it thrown back at you.

    Thats it.

Some of you need to GROW UP.

Look GR8-1, I love your fire and passion for our great University as well, but the Aggies do have some certain advantages on us, like their veterinarian school, and they are a very good university.

Of course you and I will think UT is better, that's because we are damn proud to be at this wonderful university of ours. There is nothing wrong with Refman, DCKid and other aggies being the same way.

Life extends well beyond football, I know, I know, in Texas football is king, but really why is it so hard to at least respect our rivals, it's not like Refman, DC, etc hate you in real life, and I'm sure if you ever went out with them in public, you would not trash their school like this. Heck some of you may work together some day.

Take a college friend of mine, Scott Reister, for instance, he worked at the Student TV station with me, and graduated last May with his degree in Journalism. Guess where he is working now: COLLEGE STATION. Yes, it's a steppingstone for him, but still its a Longhorn(highly into sports I might add), covering Aggie sporting events.

Also, on the subject of T.U., yes, calling us T.U. is insulting to me, because it's disrespectful to our tradition, but I can deal with it in the rivalry, even though I refuse to understand it or accept it.

I treat the rivalry very seriously on the friday after thanksgiving(game day), but outside of that, I don't really have a deep hatred of A&M. Do I rag Aggies, like my little sister, sure, but its all good natured fun. It's not like I would try and stop any of my relatives from going to A&M, because it's their decision and a fine school. But it's always fun to rib them, and Aggies feel likewise, I'm sure. In fact, some of my high school friends went to Aggieland, so you learn to keep things in perspective.

As far as our university goes: Refman, DC, I would like to tell you that UT canceled the Hex Rally before the Aggie game(our main tradition), the monday that Fails died. If that isn't exuding class than I don't know what is.

Furthermore, I know what it was liked to get bullied as a kid. You see, I have a mild form of cerebral palsy, and throughout Elementary school, kids repeatedly day after day would ask me if I had been in a car accident as I wore a plastic brace to school. It was very frustrating and annoying. I couldn't play any high school football or realistically any sports(my love) because my left achilles tendon was very weak, and I had a much higher risk of tearing it than most. It also didn't help that like Leo Mazzone, I have been afflicted with a Rocking disorder, in any situation, so I got ragged about that too. Even worse, have any of you had seisures, I did, it wasn't until I was 13-14 that an EKG cleared me permanently of them. Every week I had two physical therapists come over to my house to help me as a child, that was not fun. Try having to stretch your hamstring out until its 90 degrees like most people's range of motion: It hurts like hell. But it was even worse having to go get my brace made, and seeing all the little kids well worse off than me. In a sense, I was lucky, in another I was not. Therefore, since I wasn;t physically able to fight, I vowed never to get in one. Plus, I felt fighting was stupid. However, I adapted: I learned to become right hand dominant-I type one handed, I usually play basketball by driving to my right, throw a baseball right handed etc. , I got elected homecoming king in high school, I graduated in the top 5 percent of my class in one of the best high schools in the state with a 4.4 GPA, I attend the great University of Texas at Austin and get to cover and be around great sports teams(my passion). That is so cool, if you ask me.

Now, you may say, what did that touching tale have to do with this debate: a lot, I understand sensitivity a lot more than most, as I was a very sensitive child for reasons listed above, and I realized early on to treat people like you wish to be treated. There have been people who have crossed the line, but even then mad or not, I still tried to do everything in my power to put it behind me, and a lot of times I made friends with them and everyone who is my friend in real life calls me one of the most loyal people they have ever known, and they appreciate it.

Bottom line: Let the Aggie fans embrace their new head coach. UT has gotten most of the spotlight this year, so we can share some of it, really. Learn that life is not about football, and think about how you want to be treated before you act in a certain manner. This is life advice, not just applicable for this thread, and I sincerely hope that some of you do not treat others like some of you post on this great website at time. And overall, not that I think a BBS forum necessarily shows a person's true character, but we should all take the time to think about how our posts will affect ourselves and others before we post them.

That is all I have to say.

Damn. That was a wonderful post. You are one of the guys out there that really "gets it."

In another thread I commented that Texas fans and administrators always have acted with class and dignity when things happen like the death of Brandon Fails or the collapse of Bonfire. For the most part, I feel that is a good example of fans in Austin.

Then you have the people who feel that they MUST belittle A&M in order to feel superior. These are the people I take umbrage with. Not gr8-1 necessarily. I think he tends to go too far and has a highly slanted view of reality...but good for him. There are others who have done a lot worse.

I have no problem whatsoever with these things during the emotion of gameday. After that it is time to put it to rest until the next time and remember what is really important...these are 2 great institutions of higher learning...and we are ALL blessed to reside in the great state of Texas.

I apologize DVauthrin if I have said anything in this thread that you found insulting.

Refman, you don't have to address me by my BBS pseudonym, call me David, my first name. :)

I appreciate the compliment as well.
