    I like to call him "Ming", which is his first name. I don't understand this quote "To Yao, calling him Ming makes as little sense as referring to Rudy Tomjanovich as Tom".

    Ming=Rudy
    Yao= Tomjanovich

    right?

    So, many people call the coach "Rudy", why cannot we just call this big guy "Ming"?

    Anyway, "Yao Ming" is better.

    I think we need to settle on a nickname for him so we don't have to deal with this confusion.:D

    What windandsea said makes perfect sense to me. The nickname(s) will come with Yao's play and seeing him in a Rockets uniform on the court. THAT is going to be a sweet sight. :)

    If you call him in Chinese you call him Yao Ming, unless you are very close to him, then you call him something like "Ah Ming."

    BUT, if you call him in English, I don't see why you can't call him either "Yao" or "Ming." Just like you can call either "Steve" or "Francis," depending on the occasion.

    For simplicity's sake, many Chinese ask their American friends to call them their "first name" which is the first character of the given name (as "Zhi" in Wang Zhi Zhi). I don't think Yao Ming will get offended if we call him Ming. Lots of Chinese males have the word "Ming" in their names and I know a lot of them just want people call them "Ming" in America.

    Just like, "Hey, Knight, what's up?"

    "Why you little pissant (oof!) college puke, I oughtta tear your (agh!) arm off and beat your head with the bloody stump!"

    Note to Easy: This has nothing to do with you, it's my tribute to legendary a$$hole coach Bob Knight.
