$158,914 yearly with $95k of it being overtime? That's freaking ridiculous. Anyone who ran a company that way would go bankrupt in no time.

It's interesting that the Mayor Bill White makes $176,762 which is less than a police sergeant who makes $180k, a purchasing agent that makes $192k, and the Mayor's own Chief of Staff that makes $198k.

I just looked up my old elementary school band director. She makes 72k! Much higher than I would have expected, but then again she has been teaching there for at least 30 years.

you do realize that half that sergeant's salary was overtime, and I guess to double your salary in overtime would be about 26 hours a week of overtime?? but then that doesn't include vacations and holiday when you can't earn OT. so i guess it would avg out to about 30 hrs a week. yeah, they're probably cheating the system.

Neither do most professionals, and most professionals don't get the summer off either.

It's such a catch-22 with public and non-profit salaries. You have to pay in order to get the best people for the job because you are competing with corporations who often can offer more money. But, at the same time, you have to balance it against tax payer dollars.

I wouldn't want to make those decisions. You're screwed no matter what you do.

Yeah, but most professionals don't have to buy supplies for themselves AND their staff. Nevermind the fact that being responsible for the education of kids is, methinks, slightly more important than the average desk jockey gig.

Not all of them, obviously, but a lot.

Ha! You're a funny guy. If you work for the city, which WE help pay their salaries, then your salary is public information.

Does the fact that the police force is working way too many hours bother anyone else?

It's still a job that just about any college graduate is qualified to do. I think teacher's pay is fine, especially given the way it increases over time and the job protection teachers have due to unions and the fact that teachers get a true retirement. Really, experienced teachers make TOO much money, especially since your average career high school teacher is burnt out and worthless. That's a lot of money to babysit and play movies for half the semester.

QUESTION: Why is it Taboo to know what someone else is making?
Why do people get offended if asked about it?

    where does that come from?

You speak of things you do not know.

They may be qualified but not every college graduate is capable of teaching...and teaching well...and for more than a few years.

Perhaps, but I've got good friends who have taught for years.

One thing is for sure, years of service has little to do with teaching quality. How long does it take to become proficient at teaching a subject for the average competent teacher? If you can't get a handle on a subject after teaching it twice, you're probably in the wrong profession.

Yet pay is based on years of service, implying that teachers get more valuable the longer they work. But this isn't true. You either have it or you don't, and a second year teacher that has it is more valuable than 5 career teachers that never had it or lost it long ago.

Yeah I'll agree with that...but I wouldn't discount experience completely.
