No. What he's mad about is that VG is the next Rockets' coach after his idolized Rudy T. It matters not who the coach is...they replaced Tomjanovic. If it wasn't how they handled the media, it would be player substitutions or drafting or the offense (like ISO was the be all and end all)...there would be endless fault finding because they replaced RT.

After this past summers' roster goof ups, I really wanted to dislike VG more. Than a thread like this shows up and the posts drive me back to center point.

:) I actually hated Van Gundy before this thread. Now I'm trying to defend him.

That's the question... will they get it together soon enough? With the West as competitive as it is, losing some game in November due to inexperience can really hurt down the road, especially if injury bug bites again.

I'm not sure... but JL and VS do have some time to prove themselves and they have shown some promise... anyhow, I don't see Van Gundy clamoring for a vet PG right now. He's taking the "wait and see" approach judging by his comments.
As for vet PG... I don't see teams shopping anyone but fairly useless ones (Jason Hart?) at this point in the season. Duhon is only an option if the youngster Sefolosha proves ready later in the season.

I don't know... maybe Marko Jaric is still on the market?

He doesn't hold T-Mac accountable. T-Mac can do whatever the **** he wants, ball-hog as much as he wants and jack up as many 30-foot threes as he wants, and Van Gundy will say nothing. Yao, however, if he messes up on one pick-and-roll defense IN PRACTICE JVG will be all over him.

    It's no secret here.

JVG just simply doesnt trust any rookie/young players and doesnt want give them some time to develop.

Check his career history, he never successfully develop a rookie into a solid player.

I didnt see his criticism really work that well in the past several seasons.

The thing is he is not saying what he is seeing or at least not the whole picture. Go to the game thread and see how many positives you read about the team. People were ecstatic about Tmac and Novak, they praised Battier and they saw so much upside to Vspan. Read some of the excerpts about Vspan.

Even some of the people with more negative comments still saw positives about KillBill.

Even are very own Jeff who I thought gave a very accurate overview of the game had this to say about VSpan...

So how do you feel after reading those comments. maybe like the guy has a lot of work but he is a hopeful prospect. Where is that love from the coach. There were none. Yeah trash him if you must but then point out the positves as well. Oh and I am not refering to the article by the way. I am talking about his post game comments.

So... you watch the Rockets practice a lot?

No... not unless 5 turnovers and 2 for 11 shooting are what VS and JL bring us every game.

Didn't you read the report after the first workout/practice, where the first comment Jeff had towards Yao was that he "needed to work on his P&R defense"? I have never seen anything like that from JVG to T-Mac, EVER.

I guess there's no love here:
    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bk/bkn/4237317.html

Don't even start. JVG saw all the positives in Spanoulis long before any of us did. And he said it publicly too. JVG's job isn't to make you feel good about yourself. Lay off it already. They all stunk it up, including Spanoulis. He showed lots of promise, but he still stunk it up. For JVG to claim otherwise would be utterly dishonest, frankly speaking.

what like this? seems to be EXACTLY what you want to hear:

    http://www.nba.com/rockets/news/Notes_Van_Gundy_high_on_Spano-191124-34.html

why is it so important that van gundy gush on his players at every opportunity? you think spanoulis reads the chronicle with a sense of shock, like what is this guy saying about me? please. i think the line of communication between billy and jvg is pretty open and a lot more positve than you'd like to believe.

That's "all over him"? People are so sensitive here... like 12-year-old girls.

Here we go, the fighting on the board is already started before the season starts. Great posters seem to be difficult to post the ideas. Just make someone happy, four more years for Bush.

******* I'm getting sick of these "referendum on JVG's media style" threads. Christ. I'm officially boycotting them starting now.

Seriously. It wasn't like Van Gundy was berating Yao in public. He said it in a very light-hearted way.

Van Gundy isn't going to criticize McGrady, and there's a pretty good reason for it. Based on what happened in Toronto and Orlando, it's clear that McGrady can be sensitive to that stuff. As a coach, you can't deal with every player the exact same way. Yao is extremely coachable, has no ego, and just wants to improve. McGrady ... he's a nice guy and all, but he also has a superstar ego and needs to feel like he's the MAN on the team to thrive. That's why Van Gundy is constantly building him up, and any criticism he has is usually very measured.

I think he is referring to the fact that he was one of the first posters to acknowledge that V-Span had qualities that could make him a good player in the NBA. Long before he even made it to the states.

i personally hope casey jacobsen gets cut.. i don't like this guy. he's not a very good player and something about him just detracts me. i like the rocket's team w/o him and hope he isn't on this roster going into the regular season... i don't see what he can do that other ppl can't.
