mario was double teamed a decent amount which can open things up for other lineman. he also had a couple of decent pressures

why, julius peppers didn't thew previous week, and isn't he among the gaggle of DEs you've held up as a standard for mario?

if the coverage had been there and harrington wasn't consistently - and quickly - finding open receivers, you'd have a point. but a guy with a career completion % of 56 completed eighty percent of his throws against a secondary that included a STARTING defensive back that commited four first half penalties and was eventually benched... and you're throwing "mario should have eaten harrington alive" at us?

no one has said that; mario's two sacks against the chiefs were a component of others breaking down the pocket - that's what a TEAM does. but when one guy is clearly your best defensive lineman - and williams is - he's going to get the bulk of the attention. he'll be double-teamed; plays will be run away from him, etc.

    again, this isn't rocket surgery.

Not much blitzing. Kubiak admitted that we have been playing it safe trying to prevent the long ball. It worked against the Colts but we couldn't stop the mid game quick pass. Last Sunday we were flat too.

How about the defensive line which Mario anchors?

223 passing yards, and two sacks. It looks like they did have some effect on the passing game, no? Remember what Harrington did the week before? You've been describing Harrington's game as if he Peyton'ed us. Puh-lease. The Texans had more total yards in the game, more yards per rush, and more yards per pass. Yeah, the defense lost us that game. They were *horrible*.

While I disagree with most of pg's take, I do applaud you for defending your statements against everybody else.

The only other thing I will say about this is you have to look at the bigger picture, and I will use Vince as an example.

You say that a DE is measured by sacks, well in that case a QB is measured by his QB rating. Vince had a 66.7 rating last year, yet I would say he was a darn good QB. He improved the titans offense. Stats aren't everything, and this applies to Mario as well. I've been to two games and watched him. He is disruptive.

Personally, I enjoy doing both rocket science and brain surgery...but that rocket surgery is on a whole 'nother level.

Bottomline, we have something very nice cookin with MW and Amobi on that DL.

How many games do you win scoring 50 and giving up 51? Oh, I don't know why don't you ask the Beagles? Sorry, giving up 51 to the Browns !?! Cincy, no playoffs. Why? You must play D, to be a playoff team. That was Kuby's POV, when deciding who to draft in '06. You cannot outscore the Colts, you must devise a D to slow them down and take them out of their rhythm. Of which, as evidenced by the score change in the 4th, the D started to make a little headway. But, baby steps rarely get noticed when you're up against the Wizard, Peyton!

Don't know if we are but, we are alot closer than Cincy. Until they find a D, they're screwed!

Obviously, PGabby you did not see Mario planting RB after RB since week 1. He's starting to make a significant impact even when the numbers say otherwise and yes, that IS significant because if he keeps replicating the same efforts the numbers will come MORE or one of his teammates will get the numbers more often! So, the D stats for rushing mean NOTHING ?!? No team has gained 100 yards on the ground vs The Texans! The Jags can't say that! The Broncs can't say that! But, I guess it's either sack the QB or Mario blows! What a tool!

Carr, Smith still trying to get on the same page

    By Steve Reed
    October 2, 2007 - 4:01PM
CHARLOTTE — David Carr is eager to show Carolina fans he can do better.

Chances are, he’ll get another shot to do just that this week against New Orleans.

Although it’s still very early in the week and Jake Delhomme hasn’t officially been ruled out, the odds are Carr will get a chance to redeem himself this week at the Superdome in what’s looking like a must-win for the Panthers in terms of the team’s overall psyche.

“That was one of the worst games I’ve played in awhile,” Carr said of his performance in Carolina’s 20-7 loss to Tampa Bay. “I was never comfortable back there and we never really got in sync.”

Carr had just 40 yards passing through three quarters. While he finished the game 19 for 41 for 155 yards, most of that production came on a meaningless touchdown drive in the final three minutes.

Carr isn’t dumb. He knows the best way to get back on track is to quickly get on the same page with Pro Bowl receiver Steve Smith.

Up until the final drive, Smith was held to 5 yards on two receptions and was clearly frustrated. Television cameras showed Smith yelling on the sideline telephone, presumably at new offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson or one of the other assistant coaches.

Smith finished with 32 yards receiving.

“Somehow I need to get a little brainwave going between me and some of the wideouts,” Carr said. “I told Smitty, ‘If you’re not talking to me this week, then we have problems. I should be in your ear all week and know exactly what you’re thinking next week and you should feel the same way.’ ”

Carr said Smith has been open to working together to rectify the situation and get the Panthers (2-2) on the right track.

“It’s more me right now,” Carr said. “I just have to get a feel for what he’s doing because he’s the best receiver in the NFL. And we just have to get him the ball and it starts with me. And we’ll do that.”

While Delhomme and Smith have worked together for five years, Carr is still new to the situation, having just joined the team this past off-season.

He worked some with Smith in minicamp and training camp, but Delhomme saw most of the practice reps with the first team during the first three weeks of the season. Carr got most of the work last week, but apparently needs more because he clearly wasn’t on the same page with Smith on Sunday.

The most obvious example came on a fourth-and-2 play in the fourth quarter in which Carr overthrew Smith by about 20 yards after Smith cut off his route. The miscommunication actually made it look as though Drew Carter was the intended receiver.

“That was one of the plays,” Carr said. “There were more but they didn’t stand out as much. It’s something I’ve got to fix. It’s not a problem. He was open on the play. It’s just that we weren’t on the same play, but we will fix it.”

Smith, who is not talking with the media, would not comment.

“He’s a special guy and he does some amazing things on the field,” Carr said. “And sometimes it throws you off too. He is so talented and it has a knack for where to be on the field. That just takes some time, too. But we’ll figure it out.”

Asked if it’s taken some time getting used to Smith’s gruff personality, Carr said. “He’s a good dude. You get down to it and he means well.

“On the last play, the screen pass for a touchdown, he was blocking his tail off and trying to get his guys in the end zone. He just cares.”

I wish he was going against a defense like the Patriots this week.

I really want him to suffer for some reason.

Mean't to say no Texan opponent, obviously. But, the Jags couldn't stop the Titans and the Broncs could not stop the Colts on the ground. So I accidentally was at least half right. :D Because, I distinctly remember the Colts only gaining 92 yards on us on the ground, right?

You sure about that, Dave? You have a pretty large sample set to choose from, many of which were from less than a year ago...

    Sound familiar Texan fans?

LOL, how do you overthrow a reciever by 20 yards on a 4th and 2 play?

The more Carr opens his piehole, the stupider I feel for defending him with so much passion and vitriol only twelve months ago.

    Live and learn.

I hope Smith is working on his 5 yard routes, otherwise he won't be seeing the ball.

I have a feeling that the Pathers are going to force a lot of side screens to somehow get S. Smith in the game. We all know that Carr is incapable of getting him the ball down the field.

I've got Smith on my fantasy team and after this week I'm trading his ass if it doesn't look like Delhomme is coming back. Carr really knows how to shut down a teams offense.

This is ridiculous. No QB could lead the Panthers to wins right now. Carr is merely a victim of circumstance. I know people think Steve Smith is a great wide receiver...but he must not be, because he didn't catch many balls last week. And the Panthers have the worst OL ever. Oh, and the special teams never got him good field position. And also, it was kinda hot outside in case you didn't notice. Duh.
