8 of the team's 9 sacks have come from the DL. last year, the DL totaled 18 for the season.

so the DL is on pace to nearly double (32) their sack total from a year ago. at this point, you're either being ignorant or stubborn if you don't think mario williams is having an impact on that increase.

Call my takes on this board stupid all you want. Say I don't know jack about sports all you want. But if you can't see that you went further than that, you should really be rolling your eyes at yourself. It doesn't bother me, but don't act like my calling your stupid take stupid is the reason this thread is "childish" in your estimation.

And, it "is* stupid and naive to evaluate a DE solely on sacks. It's also stupid and naive to hold his career up to some iconic standard because of a draft decision. If that offends you (and it obviously did), then grow a thicker skin. If you're going to offer takes on an Internet bulletin board they're going to get shot at.

I didn't insult you, only your stupid post. I see them as two different things. If you don't like it, use the ignore button.

i'm not making that defense, pgabriel - but you keep whittling and whittling...

you asked for one DE considered great despite not being known for sacking the QB; i listed 3 and, as a bonus, listed a DE known for sacks who isn't considered great. that then split off into a semantic argument about who was or wasn't in the hall of fame (which you got 25% right).

anyway, point is it had nothing to do with my defense of mario williams. i never said he was hall of fame-bound, or as good as (fill in the blank HoF'er), or anything beyond dismissing the notion he's "inept;" or blasting away myopic, lazy retorts of having sack #s thrown in my face, etc.

look, you've literally been soundly rebuked at every turn; you're posting misinformation, grasping at straws, derailing threads with meaningless side discussions, inulting people and failing to owe up to having much of what you've said thrown back at you.

if you think sacks and sacks alone are important, fine. you're wrong, but fine. it's when you dismiss any other positive impact he's having on a team that is, both statistically and anectdotally, better, that your defense begins to reek of the 2006 draft and brings out the best/worst in people. like we all didn't sense the baby vince undertones of your evaluation of mario...

this is the art of ric putting words in someone's mouth. I never said sacks alone. a number one pick in the entire draft playing defensive end in the 4-3, who's team claims he was valuable because they're in the division with manning should get sacks.

run stopping doesn't make great defensive ends. it makes great middle linebackers, it makes great defensive tackles. and again, the only proof you've provided that he's a great run stopper is your opinion.

Gotcha. Tell me, then: how does "he needs to get sacks. Period." leave any room for him to be evaluated on anything else? How were we supposed to take that?

One more thing: his job is to keep the other team from gettings yards. DE's are about more than sacks.

because if he doesn't get sacks he's not valuable at his position. just like the reggie bush analogy, its nice reggie bush catches passes, but he needs to run between the tackles to be a good rb.

a good de in the 4-3, whom you spent the number one pick on is supposed to pressure the qb. and yes, draft position counts in the evaluation.

Then you're using sacks alone to determine his value (i.e. evaluate). And, that's just stupid.

In your opinion. I disagree entirely and completely, and I think it's stupid.

no without the sacks everything else is gravy. its a wasted pick. you could pick a defensive in the 3rd round to be a run stopper. you pick defensive ends at one to be sack producers.

if you think its stupid, then you need to watch more analysis and less games. because you have no idea to judge what you're watching.

I also notice no one has addressed that the texans said they drafted mario for his pressure on quarterbacks.

I disagree, but this was well-stated. To your point, I may have no idea how to judge what I'm watching, but at least I can point to things I've seen. You've offered us nothing concrete whatsoever. Nothing. Which play did you watch where Mario obviously got stood up and didn't get any pressure at all? Did you see him try to bullrush a guy when he had room to spin around him and could have gotten to the QB quicker? What did you see? I mean, beyond the sacks total you saw on NFL.com of course. Is that too much to ask?
ahhhhhhhh..... gotcha. and they drafted jacoby jones to be a WR so i guess we'll dismiss anything he does on special teams since that wasn't their stated reason for drafting the guy....
i'll quote some of the times i logged in as you and posted: but less than ten sacks will not cut it. no matter who you compare him to. you can go back and nitpick the names i picked, it doesn't take away from the fact williams needs to produce sacks to justify his pick.

and then: only a homer or the town idiot would claim that the number one pick in the draft who's an end doesn't need to get stacks (sic) to justify his draft position.

you're repeatedly held sacks up as THE standard you are using to evaluate mario williams. you've additionally dismissed pressure, run defense; you've cited okoye's 4 sacks as evidence "a rookie is out performing him." (speaking of... were you aware that the rookie DT who you're definitely NOT using sacks to evaluate, has 10 tackles to mario's 11, which makes me think of another post i made in your name: run stopping doesn't make great defensive ends. it makes great middle linebackers, it makes great defensive tackles.)

meanwhile, here are the stats - not opinion, but stats (ie facts) - that you have repeatedly ignored and/or dismissed:

the texans are ranked 6th against the run; the defensive line is on pace to DOUBLE their sack total of a year ago; the defense overall has jumped from 24th to 14th; mario williams is on pace to register 8 sacks, a total you said you would "take."

and yet, here we are on page 7, with you still doling out insults and deflections and distractions - anything and everything that has absolutely nothing to do with a solid case that mario williams has been a-OK.

"pressure" is different than sacks; we've cited he's been able to pressure the QB. two sacks this year alone (among nine) were a direct result of MW pushing a QB to other defenders.

again, its his first priority, just like you like to say vince isn't a good player because his passing stats aren't great.

run stopping, not tackling. I actually do have my doubts about amobi being a great run stopper howver because of his size. also, they got good pressure two games, two they didn't. mario should have eaten harrington alive.

if everyone is making it so easy on everyone else to get sacks on the line, why hasn't mario feasted since weak one?
