these aren't thing you'd listen to. you're just burying your head in the sand and you want someone to right a thesis about a defensive end's play. I'm not going to do that. he needs to get sacks, that's what makes a defensive end, that's why he was drafted.

that's what ever other defensive end in the history of the nfl is judged on, but you want analysis on his footwork. that's a joke right?

it was the same thing with david carr, you want someone to over analyze his suckiness when the fact is he sucked. its ironic having this conversation in this thread.

Let me tell you what I've seen. I've seen Mario in the backfield or at the line of scrimmage time and time again piling on a RB. I've seen QBs sacked by Kalu or Okoye who were running away from Mario. I've seen--and this has been the most encouraging thing to me about this team--I've seen the Texans swarming after the ball on the majority of plays. A guy barely gets past the line of scrimmage, if he does at all, and he's smeared by a swarm of blue jerseys. Evidently there's much room to improve, as they're 16th against rushing defense, but I'm seeing some encouraging things out there in Richard Smith year two that I don't remember seeing around here for a very long time, if ever.

Not an expert on these things; so I'll gladly take better analysis from those that know better.

But I won't take "he doesn't have as many sacks!!!" over that. Sorry. I guess I'm "an arrogant homer".

Bottom line Texans Fans, is that this team is improving, Mario included. There is reason for optimism for football fans in Houston again. Why are we fighting/arguing?

Anyone who is singling out Mario I have to suspect has ulterior motives and I have my suspicions as to why, VYOF, let's just enjoy it, after all we should be back on plus .500 side of things after this week, enjoy it fellas.

And leave Super alone, anyone can see he is playing MUCH BETTER this year and the plantar thing was a big part of his pedestrian play last year, this D-LINE as a group will be very fun to watch for many years, ENJOY IT TEXAN FANS!

the houston texans are tied with five other teams for 13th in sacks so the argument that mario is causing this great disruption for others doesn't hold much water either.

but i know, its just the stats, you have to actually watch.

How in the hell do you know? It's not like you've ever offered anything like that.

Just because I don't accept your opinion, based on one number, doesn't mean I'm "burying my head in the sand." It's amazing that you'll say these things and then call others arrogant. Anyone who disagrees with you couldn't possibly be thinking critically; he must be burying his head in the sand. Oh yeah, and *he's* the arrogant one.

No, just some thoughtful observations beyond a box score number.

A DE is about more than sacks.

I never called for such things with Carr. But keep bringing him up if it makes you feel better.

Mario is a beast. Last year opposing teams were going away from him. Theres no denying that. Maybe he doesn't have all the stats but thats not really the whole picture. He is disruptive, has been since day one.

But what about the Atlanta game? We LOST!!!!! We'll never be good because we lost to Atlanta last week and we should all just wallow in our collective misery.

    Sincerely,

Every great DE who still lined up against running plays. What, did they take those plays off?

minus 10, mensa - they're 6th against the run. because it's fun, i'm going to repeat that, bolded in all caps: THE TEXANS ARE SIXTH (6TH) AGAINST THE RUN. they're giving up 80 yards a game.

overall, the defense is ranked 14th, up from 24th last year.

last year, they ranked 27th. and again, disruption doesn't exclusively equal a sack. that's so simple-minded, i can't believe anyone would knowingly support such a notion.

i'll name three: howie long; played 13 years, made the HoF, and registered double-digit sacks in just three seasons. lee roy selmon, another first overall, btw, and HoF'er, rang up 78.5 sacks in 9 years. closer to home, ray childress (third overall pick) hit double digit sacks once in his 12-year career.

i would contend any "great" DE you name was above average or better at every other facet of the game beyond merely sacking the QB. that's why guys like mark gastineau aren't in the hall of fame.

    there's a mistake on nfl.com, sorry.

ray childress was a defensive tackle, 78/9 is over eight a year, yes will take that, I don't know what your point is there, and if mario is as good as howie long people would notice.

and guys like bruce smith, reggie white, charles haley, richard dent, etc are.

again, even the texans claimed the drafted mario because of pass rushing so this whole rushing argument is a moot point

I don't know as much about football or its history as Ric and gunn, who answered your question quite nicely. But I *still* contend that they were *all* good against the run, or else they wouldn't be considered *great*.

    You, too!

that he get to the quarterback, again they stated that's why they drafted him, particularly mentioning peyton manning being in the division.
