One of the main ways pass rushing DE's are guaged is by sack numbers, correct? When DE's are usually mentioned sacks are one of the first things brought up. I'm not saying sacks are all that matters...but I don't see how anyone can say they don't expect a pass rushing DE to get sacks, especially when they went #1.

With all that being said, Mario Williams crucial sack today was arguably a game changing play. And it was a hell of a sack too (one hander).

i'm just waiting for someone to come up with a criticism of mario's sack. either it was "handed to him" or he "just happened to be there" or some crap like that...

I thought it was a great sack personally, and basically won the game (ok...well was the key to us stopping them).

Nope. Freeney gets paid the big bucks for one reason and one reason alone: to get sacks. If he doesn't get 10 sacks this year, he is a bust and he's not worth his paycheck. "Period".

I think Mario's sack today kind of highlights the point some of the guys are in here making. It was a great play, he imposed his will and came up big. It was that play that really made an impact on the game, and seemed to get the whole D-line fired up. *That's* what the better DE's do - and why those 'just sack' numbers are important.

You look at Taylor today; those sacks are the 'big plays' I think we should expect from our best DEs.

Though IMO Mario has been very inconsistent, I still believe he will continue to get better. To say he's been a bust is wrong - but so is it to say he's just been playing 'great' IMO.

All good DE's get that push or are solid parts of the line - but it's the better ones that do that *and* get numbers. That's what we should consistently expect of Mario (and what I still believe we will see...eventually. Hopefully.)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme will miss the rest of the season after deciding to undergo surgery on his right elbow.

Coach John Fox said Monday that Delhomme had trouble throwing the ball earlier in the day. Delhomme then made the decision to have surgery next week.

Delhomme sustained what the team called a strained right elbow when he was sacked in Carolina's win over Atlanta on Sept. 23. David Carr replaced him the last two games, when Delhomme was listed as the No. 3 quarterback as he considered whether to have surgery.

Delhomme was off to a good start. He had completed 64 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and one interception.

The move leaves the Panthers in need of another quarterback. Carr suffered a back injury in the Panthers' win over New Orleans Sunday and his status for next week's game at Arizona is uncertain.

Speaking of defensive ends...Julius Peppers has 0 sacks in 5 games this season. He must suck.

read the quote i was responding to - i was referring to not caring how people outside of houston perceived mario williams, which seems to be a big deal to you, for some reason.

i don't care about individual players - i want the team to win. the texans' DL has now posted 9 sacks in five games, a 29-sack pace. last year, they recorded 18. it would represent a significant upgrade. and williams is part of it.

Mario's sack yesterday was huge. It pushed the Dolphins out of FG position, saving 3 points at the very least.

And there you have it. Anyone else want to argue that Julius Peppers sucks this season? You forgot Freeney, pgabs--evidently he's sucked now for 21 consecutive regular season games.

I blame David Carr. His play demoralizes the defense.

julius peppers is sucking right now. did he play well against the texans? i thought you were through talking to me anyway.

since you've decided to speak to me again i should also tell you this. i know jerome solomon who wrote this article. i took issue with you calling him stupid at first then callin me stupid.

jerome solomon started writing high school articles in his neighborhood in 1992 for those little local sections that the chronicle puts out. he worked his way up to the lead writer for the Big XII. He then left for arguably the best sports paper in the nation, the boston globe. that's why i got so upset with you and ric for calling his article stupid, you may not agree, and ric (who's football historical knowledge I actually respect) but believe me jerome has paid his dues and his opinion should be respected.

I called neither of you stupid. I called your stupid take stupid, and it is. If that stupid take was Solomon's take, it's no less stupid.

So, because he has a great story, I should never call out anything stupid he ever writes? Because that wouldn't be the first stupid thing he's ever written in Houston.

Forgot to answer this. Judging from the whining I heard about Salaam after the game, I would guess that yes, Peppers did play well against the Texans.

Awesome. Peppers and Freeney are getting no more sacks than Mario, so they suck. All three of them. They're all BUSTS.

the only way you can argue with me is put words in mouth. i never said a damn word about freeney and i never called anyone a bust. i said he's having a bad year. if you want to argue with your own made up statements because you don't have the acumen to argue with my actual statements, have a nice day.

If he's so knowledgeable, then how about an actual, responsible analysis of how a DE is supposed to play? How about, as a reporter with access to the team, to the coaches, probably to their film room, to the athletes themselves, and a freaking degree in journalism for crying out loud, a little research beyond damn number we could *all* look up in that worthless excuse for a sports section?

That is so weak, gabriel. I'm supposed to take this guy's opinion at face value because he's a reporter with credentials, when he doesn't responsibly invest any research or factual content beyond what any of us--who have neither his resources or his connections--could come up with?

It was a stupid take. You can tell your friend Jerome that a lot of us think so. I would assume that with his job he's developed a pretty thick skin.
