Right. So, hurries, pressures, and chasing the QB into sacks by other members of the line don't count then, only sacks. Gotcha.

EXACTLY--because the only way someone could possibly see it any other way than how you see it is if something were wrong with his judgment. The "homer" ad hominem is so freaking old and so freaking arrogant.

Mario's a great DE. Get over it, VYOFs.

anyone who would label mario williams a bust is a card-carrying loon.

why does mario williams have to get sacks? i don't understand this simple-minded approach to viewing football. is dunta robinson only judged by interceptions? he had three over a two-year period - he must suck and offer no other valu to the team. should we boil andre johnson down to just TDs, because he's never had more than 6.

the DL lin is on pace to record 32 sacks this year; last year, they totaled 18. the year before his arrival, 13.5 (granted, in a 3-4 system). he's impacting that number directly.

who honestly cares what non-texan fans think?

name a great DE that didn't play on a great defensive unit. the texans have an awful secondary; they don't blitz primarily because of how bad it is. and no blitzing means they're sending 4 guys against 5 OL, a TE if he stays home, a FB if he stays home, and/or a RB if he stays home. as of right now, 4 games into the season, all non DL for the texans - LBs, and DBs - have totaled one sack. ONE!

in the falcon game, atlanta faced a third down of 6 or more 6 times and just once in the first half. altogether, they ran 61 plays. so you're judging mario's ability to record a sack on roughly 10% of the plays; not that sacks only occur on third and long, but that's when he can rear back and come after it; otherwise, he has to stay in his assignment, guard against the run, etc.

and the one sack the DL did record, btw, was a direct result of williams flushing harrington from the pocket and into okoye.

next year, when they get a chance to address the secondary, i think we're going to see it pay big dividends across the board. do you realize mario will only be 23 next opening day?

uhm... they play basketball. not even remotely applicable.

its a stupid question, because if you have a great de, it will help the total defense tremendously, the irony is its the same thing with the david carr argument. you guys are making the excuses. if you have defensive ends who can get to the qb, your corner backs don't need to be that good.

but just to answer the question, when michael strahan broke the record in 01, the giants ranked 9 in defense, good, not great.

A top 10 defense in the league. Not helping your case, there.

I knew you would come in here with the "excuses!!!!11!!1" take.

The funny thing about your comparing this with the Carr situation: Carr had numbers, but he just didn't have (according to others) "it". (Whatever "it" is.) Now here's Mario, who is making a difference to anyone (including mediots even) who's actually watching, and example after example on top of example has been provided, and you're dismissing him--because of a number.

    Awesomely disingenuous.

there's a reason why great defenses are anchored by great ends. because a great end will improve your defense tremendously. you guys are making our argument for us. for the texans to get the value of the number one draft pick, he has to play better.

reggie white goes to green bay, they win the super bowl. jevon kerse goes to tenn, they get to the superbowl in his amazing rookie rookie year. the correlation isn't great defense makes great end, its great end makes great defense.

what numbers did carr have? so the number nine defense in one year is a great defense, wow, you have awesome aspirations. i'm sure kubiak's goal is number 9/31.

this ain't college football, 9/31 isn't great. unless you're trying to prove your argument.

he IS helping; note (again), the DL is on pace to nearly double last year's sack total. is it your contention that he's not impacting that at all?

the david carr "excuses" were never invalid - they did have a poor OL; they did lack a running game; the previous coaching regime was a collection of idiots, etc. david carr ultimately proving to be indifferent and non-committed doesn't wash any ofthat away, nor does it excuse additionally valid "excuses" concerning mario williams.

and you continue to blow right past larger issues. what about the lack of blitzing? one sack from non-DL. what do you think is causing that?

when the texans' defense is good enough to be ranked 9th and williams is still putting up 4.5 sacks a year and having no additional impact on the game, we'll reconvene.

    Alllll because of Reggie White.

    Alllll because of Jevon Kearse.

Who *else* was on those defensive units? Do you actually believe they made their teams great all by themselves?

And, Mario Williams does *not* have to be Jevon Kearse to "justify his draft selection." He doesn't have to "justify his draft selection" at all, except to a bunch of VYOFs who are still throwing a panty-fit, 20 months later.

    Get over it.

talk about excuses, i provide concrete evidence of what great defensive ends do, and you just dismiss. awesome

you tell me what other great players were on those teams

yes, a number one draft pick in one of the best drafts ever doesn't have to justify his draft selection. homerism at its best. i haven't mentioned vy once, looks like you need to look in the mirror about who can't get off his dick.

The 1997 Green Bay Packers had a defensive backfield with LeRoy Butler (4 time Pro Bowler) and Eugene Robinson (3 time Pro Bowler) plus Sean Jones (1 Pro Bowl) opposite Reggie White. Not to mention Santana Dotson who was a DROY.

That would help someone get sacks.

The 1999 Tennessee Titans had a defensive backfield with Blaine Bishop (4 time Pro Bowler) and Samari Rolle (1 Pro Bowl) plus a cast of pretty decent players even if they all weren't Pro Bowlers.

If we are having to compare MW to someone like Reggie White and Jevon Kearse, then he must be doing something right. When we have even a half way decent backfield and we can actually blitz, our defense is going to be much improved and MW will have even better numbers.

We have (sans Robinson) a ridiculously weak backfield. Anyone that says that having a great defensive end negates a weak backfield is just ****ing r****ded. There are tons of things you can do, double, triple teams, move the pocket away from the strong end, 3 step drops, etc, etc.

and amobi just won rookie of the month and robinson is one of the better corners in the league. not to mention the best rookie last year on defense. mario ain't playing with shabby company, especially comparing to that tenn defense.

yes, they did - in his fourth season with the team.

and asking for other great "players" on a team is the exact brand of myopic bull**** we're rallying against. but for the record, leroy butler, eugene robinson, doug evans and brian williams were all all-pros during that time; not pro bowlers - all pros. sean jones and gilbret brown were also on the team as was craig hentrich, an all-pro punter. and if you don't think having a great punter helps a defense... well, what am i talking about? of course you don't: punters don't get sacks.

their defense ranked 15th that year; if 9/31 is good, not great...

No, you dropped a name with no context whatsoever. You, however, have been given concrete examples, over and over and over ad nauseum in this thread, of things Mario Williams has done, and you've addressed exactly zero of them. Hilarious that you're now accusing someone else of dismissing something concrete. Keep lobbing your feathers up here while the concrete that's been thrown your way bludgeons you to death.

Nice cop-out. You brought it up. Perhaps you need a "daddy," too?

Correct. He didn't draft himself. Whether or not that draft should have been made is a separate issue. Is he playing like a great DE? Yes. That's all I care about.

No, common sense at its best.

but we all know you're a VYOF. I get so sick and tired of the "you must be a homer" crap, I decided to respond in kind--I believe you called it "playing down to the competition" yesterday. If anyone disagrees with you he's a homer? Nah--if anyone disagrees with me he's a VYOF. See how stupid that is?

    That's just nasty.

pgabriel, the DL is one pace to double their sack total from a year ago. is it your contention mario williams is not in any way, shape or form impacting that?

and stop listing off great players as if that translate to anything. it takes great teams to win.

Amobi is a 20 year old rookie. Robinson is the only DB we have that should even be playing, not starting but playing, on an NFL team.

what's concrete about your argument? i saw mario tackle a running back in the backfield therefore he is great?

i've supported my arguments, you asked me to disprove my argument by naming othe great players on those teams, umm, that's your job idiot.

this might be the dumbest thing you've written in this thread yet, he didn't draft himself, therefore he doesn't need to play well. hell, he doesn't even need to practice or suit up given that logic.

but no one's arguing about vince young, you've obviously continued this because you think people are picking on your home town team. this has nothing to do with vince. again, remove vince dick from msn mouth.
