This would have been true 3 or 4 years ago. We're not exactly a young team anymore. Yao is at his peak right now and (some would argue that) T-Mac is past his. We don't have the luxury of waiting for next year.
Yeah, I like our team too, but we really need an upgrade at PG. (Although, I think that this off-season, we really have to decide whether the TMac/Yao connection works.) Mike Miller would be a nice addition, in terms of shooting, but that would mean either Miller of Battier not starting. If Miller was willing to do a Ginobli approach, he'd be a great asset. But, something doesn't add up with Miller. His teams never seem to win very much, and I worry about that. Of course, Memphis could screw anyone up ... Now, if we could add Kidd, Cassell, Hinrich, TJ Ford, or Monta Ellis to the picture, that would be a different story.
Trouble is, the moves available are pretty marginal and all would involve risking the future for a slightly better chance at what is probably the deepest western conference play-off race in many many years.
You can't trade Alston now. That would be trading the only guy who can run our offense to a new guy who would have to start from ground zero and learn how to run the new offense. Remember the horrible start we got off to?
I know all the Francis haters think they've "won" (if you can really call it that), but I was so sure that Stevie was going to be that major addition for us. I'm happy with all the other surprise players, and hope to see even more production from them (especially Scola), but I really hope we can continue to pile on talent with Steve coming back healthy next year, or maybe even James having a real impact. Maybe I'm being an idiot, but I still think they (especially Francis) have game left. This team is so stacked, and we should be able to beat anyone even as we stand now... but I expect even more soon!
agree completely. this kinda depends. sometimes a team does need to make a gamble. miami has netted a trophy in its trade for shaq (butler and odom were much younger then). now the suns are gambling on shaq again. though i don't see it working, i can understand where they come from. we may have a minor deal or even 2, but i don't think many are reasonably expecting a big trade by the rockets this year. we just don't have the right pieces of trade bait. in other words, we will have to work with what we have and try to get the most out of it. i have not looked at our contract and salary situation for this offseason, but this offseason is supposed to be a big one for free agency, right?
Here's what bothers me about the article -- it presumes a trade by the Rockets would only be a reaction to moves by Los Angeles or Phoenix. Uh, guys ... you needed to make a move BEFORE the Lakers got Gasol or the Suns got Shaq. Nothing's changed.
Who/what do we need to make a move for? There are certain guys on our team that I wouldn't mind using as trade bait, but for the most part, we have a solid rotation, and we (probably) couldn't get much for those unneeded guys anyways. You really think we "need" a trade in order to be a real threat?
with our pf position solidified (kinda), pg is obviously our most obvious weakness that is preventing us from being an elite team. and i don't mind to have someone better than luther as our backup 2.
I never cease to be amazed how well rhetoric works on most people. Blah, Blah, Blah, there are still GLARING talent deficiencies on this team, especially at PG. The PG's in the West are too big and too talented not to make an upgrade if possible. AND, we need a shooter/scorer in the worst way. On any given night anybody in the NBA can beat anybody, but not consistently. The seven game series proves true talent. And I recall that the Rockets haven't won one of those in a while.
I believe the rockets need to make one minor move...it doe not have to be a big splash like shaw or pau...but ifd we dont i think this team is still better then S.A L.A OR even N.O...the only changes i think the rockets should really consider are Mike Miller trade that does not invole landry or battier and a sam cassell signing thats about it though
I can't deny the deficiencies at PG (and who'd have thought that would still be our weakest position after this summer? damn injuries...). But isn't it a bit much to ask for high caliber players at every position? I think we have a lot of talent at every position except PG. But really, what team (yes, championship team) hasn't had a deficiency at at least one position. I mean the '06 Heat definitely did. Their PG was crap, and their SF was average at best. The Spurs have pretty much had garbage at the "true" center position for a while now. Same thing with the Mavs at both center and SG (except when both Harris and Terry are playing). If we can get a clear improvement at PG, I'm all for it. I'd love to see Rafer GTFO of here. But it is not worth forcing a trade for what may or may not be a marginal improvement, especially if it involves major rotation players.
^^^ Oh, and to add to that, our PG position is at least improved from last year. Rafer is shooting a little better (inside the 3-pt line), and now we actually have some people worth a damn behind him in the rotation.
