You are dead wrong about not needing another PG. We must get someone better than or equal to Rafer who can make the opposing PG work on defense. Until that happens, teams will continue baiting our PGs into shooting and missing and opposing PGs will shred our defense because they only have to play hard on one side of the floor.

I agree. We need to upgrade at pg position. Rafer maybe is not that bad but he is not that good either. He would be good as a bench player.

We need point guard who can play like point guard and can create for McGrady, Yao and for other players. As you said he also has to make opposing pgg work on defense, especially when it is Paul/Deron/Parker/Nash, etc.

We need another PG who is better than our current backups. If he is better than Alston, that's great. In either case, we still keep Alston.

Is Scolandry not a viable 3rd option?

Man, we are on one perfect wavelength of opinion. What worries me further is the Morey is recently on record as wanting to upgrade "skill sets".

Screw the skill sets. Get rid of Rockets' Munchkin Mania and take some risks on tall athletes. They need to build the team based upon the absence of YM/TM. Emphasing role players is what got them into this mess.

When Morey mentioned he is looking for a player who create his own shot I was hoping he meant a multi-dimensional player.I admit I didn't grasp the significance of the term skill sets, but if this is a code for one dimensional role players who can't do anything else then it would be horrifying and not entirely unexpected either.

If you are referring to the Friedman interview, I think it was pretty clear he used the term 'skill sets' just because he couldn't use real players as an example. By the 'skills' he named, it seemed that he was talking about the need to get a player who can score on his own and is not a complete defensive liability. A Bonzi from a few years ago for example.

replacing alston is easier said than done.

there are no better PG's on the market. even if a team is willing to part ways with one for the right price, i guarantee the price is out of the rockets budget.

besides, half of the championships won in the last 8 years have gone to starting PG's no better than rafer (fisher/williams). they did it by playing defense, hitting open shots, and relying on thier SG and C for most of the scoring. sound familiar?

The skill set he's talking about sounds exactly like what Maggette has. Also in the Q&A the way Morey talks wanting to maintain about our defensive identity it's clear to me Battier is safe. Whoever we would be adding would have to backup Tmac and Shane as Adelman said, so a 6th man is our #1 goal.

Maggette and Miller and Pietrus have been talked about. I'll propose one Grant Hill? He would come for the vet's minimum, and our team darn sure looks to be doing better than Phoenix next year.
