Yeah but if you are a body builder your body is a hell of a lot tougher and more durable than a strength trainer or weight lifter.
I think if Novak becomes a Radmonovic at maximum efficiency in 2 years, we'd all be very happy. 12 ppg, 5 rpg, 2 apg, 1 spg, 45% fg, 41% 3pt, 90% ft would do it. Perfect compliment to Yao and Tracy, with Battier on the other wing spreading the floor.
um, I'm trying to shorten the wikipedia article on the Houston Rockets' 05-06 season, and I just want to ask you guys do you think this is good enough? I don't know where else I can post this......... The Rockets entered the 2005-2006 season with high hopes, but before the season even began injuries began. Bob Sura had surgery on his knee, and a few games into the 05-06 season, Tracy McGrady injuried his back. In December, Yao Ming injured his foot. With only one of their two star players on the floor, the Rockets floundered, but in February, both Yao and McGrady were finally playing together, the team’s record was 10-3. But in the end, the Rockets’ had several key players injured, to the extent that in some games, the Rockets only had 8 available players to play. By the end of the season, the Rockets lead the entire league in the most games missed by each player on the roaster. The team finished with a 38-44 record, and a number 8th spot in the NBA Draft. They draft [[Rudy Gay]], and he was immediately dealt to the [[Memphis Grizzlies]] with Stromile Swift for [[Shane Battier]]. This caused a massive outcry from the fans, most of whom thought that Gay had the potential to become a superstar. The Rockets also acquired [[Kirk Snyder]] from the [[New Orleans Hornets]] for cash consideration, and swap of 2nd round picks, signed [[Vassilis Spanoulis]] (a 2004 pick), [[Steve Novak]].
exactly my point, how often has that happened. the fact that you had to go back 8 years only validates it, and you can't name anyone else.
To be honest, I don't have a whole lot of hope that Novak is going to be able to bulk up enough to play PF. He's got relatively short arms for the league, and he's not particularly athletic. So he'll have to rely on weight and strength more than other guys. He checked into the combine at 216 lbs. And I'd be surprised if he wasn't trying to gain weight at that time. Combine that with a slight frame, and I don't really see how he can put more than 10-15 lbs of muscle. And at 230 with short arms and below average athleticism, I don't see how he's going to play anything more than spot minutes at the PF. I mean Peja is about 6'10" and 230, and nobody think he has a chance at PF. Novak certainly needs to gain weight and strength. But I'd say it'll be more to matchup against SF's who post up, than to be able to play PF.
Methinks CD is je*king off about the PF spot. And JVG has to follow suit. From what I can see so far, our PF spot could look like this: 4) Juwan Howard, Chuck Hayes, Shane Battier, Steve Novak Get real. Juwan will man the spot because we're paying him anyway, Chuck is the energizer and tough but undersized, Shane can play spot minutes there to stretch the D but is undersized, and Steve Novak...? Elton Brand would use Steve Novak as his sweatband.
Why do you and many others on this board continue to believe Juwan Howard is a better PF than Battier. Shane Battier is stronger, quicker, blocks more shots, plays much better d and will get more rebounds than Juwan at the PF spot. Not to mention he is an excellent 3 point shooter which will space the floor and makes him a tremendously much more desirable player on the floor with Yao. Battier without a doubt is the best PF option we have on this team and certainly better than JHO and until we draft or sign someone better him, he is our starting PF.
Elton Brand uses most guys as his sweatband. My hope is that Novak might at least be able to offset this problem by either hitting a few threes or at least pulling Brand away from the basket to create more space in the paint for the other guys.
Relax...were not excited....we are optimisitc about Novak...Gomes was a second round pick last yr and made the rookie second team. Ever heard of guys like Cuttino, Manu, Dennis Rodman, Redd, Arenas, and the list goes on and on.
No true at all. Truth be told body building has ruined sports training. The difference between elite athletes and average joe's is motor control, not strength. Generally speaking, basic strength training and olympic weight lifting do a better job developing motor skills than body building. That being said I probably would limit the amount of strength training I did with B-ball player as it is overrated in this particular sport. There are certainly times when a bodybuilding protocol would be appropriate but it is way overused.
I'm not saying he'll be a bust, or that he won't play. I just wouldn't count on it, some are already dropping him in the rotation. i'll never understand why arenas and redd were second round picks. to be honest, I was high on cuttino when the rockets picked him coming off his tournament performance. other overseas guys or small college guys go late for that reason. they're overseas, or small college guys.
Or Gilbert Arenas or Redd.... Ah never mind....I see Pgabs point. Though I think Novak will see the floor as an alternative to Howard and Hayes by spreading the floor. DD
I guess mostly because Battier has never played a full season at the 4 spot. He provides some minutes there, but he is 6'8 220. He isn't going go guard Elton Brand either, not for 40 minutes. Although it does make sense with what CD said, cause he talked about Snyder possibly starting, which would push Tmac to the 3 and Battier to the 4, because i'm sure we'd rather have Battier starting than Snyder. I think training camp is going to determine alot. I just have trouble seeing Battier play the 4 full time for a whole season. Marion can do it, but he is supremely athletic and long and that makes up for it.
