People make too much of a bid deal with height. I just wanna know if you can play big which of course Landry does.

Sorry, but I completely disagree. With his age, explosiveness, athletic ability and outside jumper, he will definetly get some good offers from teams that see the exact same things we see and more.

Yes, I realize that but it potentially puts the Rockets in a major bind.

For instance, say someone offers him a 3 year deal worth 10 million dollars......not too bad right?

But if that team has cap room they could front load it to where he gets 7 million in year one.......and that blows the Rockets salary cap next year.

And the roster suffers, or they can't match it.

Not saying it is going to happen, but it could.

I'd be surprised if some other team doesn't show interest in Landry. Not going to be happy if the Rockets let him get away.

    No. They can't.

a.) The Rockets are over the cap next year, regardless.

b.) Signing bonuses are capped at 17.5% of total comp. for restricted free agents.

c.) Salary raises or decreases from year to year within the contract are capped at 8%.

d.) Gilbert Arenas provision prevents any sort of real troubles. See http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#37

The only issues that can possibly arise are a team offering more years/money than the Rockets are willing to match, or the Rockets find a player in free agency that would require the full MLE.

If the latter occurs, I imagine it would be for someone substantial, and Landry would just be a cap casualty.

I think a good basis of comparison for Landry's top end comp this summer would be Amir Johnson -- he signed a 3 year, 11 mill deal last summer.

It seems like most teams only have the MLE so its highly doubtful that he would get an offer for some team that we wouldn't match.

After an impressive playoff run, Matt Barnes got 1 yr/3 M. He is only 27.

Hey, great info Nike, I stand corrected.

For some reason, I thought that a team had done that in the last couple of years to prevent the current team from being able to sign them...maybe Boozer?

    Anyway, good to know.

You remember right, but that was under an older CBA.

The "Gilbert Arenas" provision could have been also nicknamed the "Carlos Boozer" provision. Both were 2nd round picks who made it big and were offered contracts above the Early Bird/MLE level, preventing their original teams from matching.

Under the new CBA, assuming we don't use the MLE elsewhere, we will be able to match any offer for Landry.

Charlie Palilo said the rockets have the option in the 2nd year.

Lock him up Morey. Sooner the better while he's still of awe of even being in the NBA sharing the court with T-Mac and Yao.

Yep, be a vicious capitalist and pay him 1 million a year! :D

Somehow 1 million a year doesn't rhyme with cheap labor.

A question. Let's suppose Rockets do hava a 2nd year option, and they choose to use it. After next year, Landry becomes a RFA. Do the Rockets still have to use their MLE to match any other Landry offers? Or does it become a separate deal(because that was my original assumption for RFA signings).

The Chronicle write-up of his signing was pretty explicit about it being a one year deal and Landry entering free agency at the end of the year.

But under your scenario, the Rockets would not have to use the MLE to match offers. Players with 2 years (subject to some other things) have so called "Early Bird" rights, which allow their team to sign them to a salary roughly equal to the MLE without using it.

    Great game by Landry tonight!

That's definitely not accurate. I contacted Daryl Morey with this exact question last Saturday because there were conflicting reports about his status -- Morey said Landry is a restricted free agent.

Pretty sure rockets will do whatever it takes to sign CL to a contract, unless Morey is a fool, I am sure he is not!

    Clutch,

May I request a nice write up from you on Landry?......

And apparently the Purdue team was in attendence tonight, any way we can get them on the charter for the rest of the year?

ahh well, Charlie isn't perfect  ...he prolly was looking at hoopshype...imagine if Rich Lord researched this...

again, as long as no one offers him crazy Boozer money then we should be ok.
