I wish Cook was part of this list instead of Pops.....

When the Rockets' morning shootaround ended Monday, four players remained on the Toyota Center practice court. It's little wonder they did not want to leave.

Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Will Conroy, Garrett Temple and Romel Beck, the four Rockets with non-guaranteed contracts, might have wanted to put the coming roster cuts out of their minds. The court might have offered respite from thoughts of the cuts.

“It's kind of impossible to put out of your mind,” Conroy said. “Your future, as far as what is going to happen with this team, is this week. You just want to go out there and do what you've been doing, be a good teammate and do what the coach asks you do.”

The Rockets are expected to trim two players in the next few days, with the last cut expected by the end of the week. But with Monday's game, coach Rick Adelman moved toward using his rotation, rather than using the game for tryouts. (With Luis Scola out, Mensah-Bonsu was the second big man off the bench, with 13 points in 16 minutes.)

“When I'm practicing, I'm more learning than anything, listening to the guys and the coaches,” Temple said. “When I'm playing, I'm just trying to help the team win. It's not as much about trying to make the team, just trying to do as much as I can in terms of hustle plays, defensive plays, helping this team win.”

But that might not be enough, with the Rockets likely to consider the position they need as much as the player they prefer.

“That makes it tough,” Conroy said. “If you go out there and have a great game, no matter what you do, it might be the opposite guy (that makes the team).

“You're playing for all 30 teams. Somebody else might see what you've done and bring you in. You try to take advantage of the opportunity you've been given and if it doesn't work here, hopefully it might be somewhere else.”

    There is a bright side.

“It's been a good experience,” Beck said. “I've never been in this situation.”

Cook's contract is worth too much to cut him. Look for him to be packaged in a trade at the trade deadline.

We all know Pops is going to get the spot since we lack size up front.

    J. Taylor hasn't proved to be on this team. I think he needs to be sent down to the Vipers for development. If that happens, I think Conroy would take his spot.

I think Pops is going to make the team.

wow. i didn't know pops was 6'9 till i seen his basketball reference page. so he could possibly make the team on size alone. he also can be the defensive stopper we possibly need.

Looking back at the Rafer/Lowry & Cook trade, most would agree that the Rockets are very happy in what they are seeing out of Lowry. The problem is that we had to absorb the contract of Cook. IMO, if we can't dump Cook, we may lose out on some promising young players. We may have to offer a team a 2nd round pick and or cash to take Cook off our hands. The one good thing is that Cook is on his last year of his contract, seems like this would help some teams clear cap space for next year. If we can't move Cook, maybe another player like Dorsey could be moved. Another option would be a 2 for 1 deal that would free up an extra roster spot. Come on Morey, get it done.

I don't believe NBADL works the same as baseball minor leagues. If they send J Taylor to Rio Grande Valley he would still take up a roster spot, but I could be talking out of my ass.

I'll say it again. GS needs bigs. Jackson for Cook, Mensa-Bonsu or Joey, Barry and maybe Taylor. Problem solved.

Jacksons contract is too long and for too much money.

3 more years maxing at just over $7M. Not bad for a good sixth man.

That makes the most sense. J-Taylor has disappointed me a bit this preseason.

I do like Conroy's game a lot, though, and I'm a fan of keeping three PGs on the roster, especially when you really only have one true PG as it is.

Yeah - it makes a whole lot of sense - except it doesn't, because it's impossible under the NBA CBA.

    crimsonghost is right.

    But we need bigs too?

And I doubt giving another team our crap for a genuine player is going to pan out pre-season. Perhaps halfway through the year if someone is looking to dump salary (which then raises the question of whether the player we'd be acquiring is a franchise level player - since they'd be taking up most of our available cap space for 2010).

keep pops, the two 2nd rounders, and don't give up on dorsey just yet. i say let conroy, temple. and beck go.

we need size, to go with speed which we already have. pops would be a great compliment to our current roster.

scola, landry, pops, hayes, dorsey, cook all bring different aspects, cook's on his expiring contract, if we can somehow trade it + a future second rounder for a relatively unknown player who can blossom here, that would be great.

how about that C from the j*zz, that european guy? Koufos.

unlike many on the board, i haven't been impressed with conroy at all

that being said, cook and dorsey have no business making the roster......i'd rather carry only 13 players than keep those sorry excuses for bball players in rockets jerseys

Barry and coock have have expiering contracts and i suspect they could be packiaged anytime. if not then surely barry will be waived. that leaves 2 spots. tht should go to pop and conroy. pop is allready the best shotblocker and interior defender we have.he is a definet keeper
