Yao has yet to be in shape at any point....the guy needs to get more dedicated to his diet and excercise, or he will never reach his potential. Look at Steve, he took care of his Mineares disease by being committed to diet.... Yao needs to be more professional about his training. DD
this was mentioned by various chinese media sources in multiple occasions. yao probablly spent half of his time in beijing and the other half in shanghai. while he was in shanghai he was more busily occupied by all the PR things. but when he was in beijing he normally took a low profile. he lived in a hotel where the chinese NT were staying and workout there as well. ofcourse he was not doing it in full throttle. but it's not accurate to say that he just took the whole month off and let the burgers pump him up.
Until we know for sure what Yao has been doing, it is hard to make the assessment that Yao isn't being professional about it....yes?
This is so obvious, you have to wonder what the Rockets management is thinking by not doing it. This thought was brought up awhile back by many of us wondering how Yao's offseason would differ from the last one. What are they thinking? Are they trying to save money? Does Yao refuse to have a trainer, etc. that was provided by the Rockets? Do we currently have anything more important, sans the TMac soap opera, during the offseason than Yao's conditioning? I think not.
Honestly Deck, this issue is more important than the TMac thing if you ask me.... TM is a known commodity, who has made his wishes to be a Rocket known...it is just a matter of time there....but until Yao gets the endurance and strength that a dominant center must have in this league, we are boned.
No question about it. I hope the "out of shape" info is overblown. I just don't get why the Rockets aren't more involved with this. If they are and we don't know it, I wish someone would let us know.
one of the disadvantages of having a franchise that is notoriously close-mouthed about what they are doing in the background. For all we know, they have offered or are helping and just not saying anything about it. ah hell....beats me...I just hope that the sore back is from over-training and not from under-training. which would be worse?
Trader Dan should email Del Harris to get an update. (We clutchfans here need an update about Yao's conditioning every 60 minutes. )
Teams are different. Many teams just skip on these kinds training/nutrition things. Think about EG, how can the Rox let EG descend like this? Think about the number of assistant coaches, how many does the Rox have and how many does the Mavericks have? I read an article a while ago about the Chicago Bulls. If my memory is right, it was said on the article that the Bulls hire a trainer for every player on its roster, the trainer would follow the player no matter where he goes. I doubt the Rox has this kind of stuffs.
He already did. Del Harris confirmed that Yao came in a bit out of shape and had a sore back. In fact the Del Harris thread was where I first heard this news. Thank You Trader Dan for getting the first scoops here.
Dude, he played 32.8 minutes last year, up 3.8 minutes from the year before. I would bet that he averages 35 easy next year.
There is suually a big difference between someone traing for strenght and someone training for endurance. Any of you that goto gyms will usually notice the difference between the power lifters (like the guys on Maerica's straongest man competitions) and more of teh athletes (cut yet not nearly as strong as the power lifters). The biggest difference is the power lifters train to work in short bursts. They may have healthy hearts but they (usually) aren't good at cardio activities and many times carry alot of extra weight. They may be able to bench 500 pounds but you put them on a treadmill and they look like the new guy at the gym. My thought is maybe the Rockets told Yao to work on his strength. They may be willing to give up 2-3 additional minutes of game time for a dominating player in the paint. I for one don't believe the Rockets would ignore Yao's diet and training. More than likley (I beleive) they are working on his strength and power and are willing to give up some endurance to get it.
It sounds like the Rockets Management has slipped up BIG TIME. One would have thaught that with all the help Yao needs to be ready for NBA Basketall that they would have sent at least one or two personal trainers to get Yap ready! With that said its still not too late for him to diet, to do strength training and stamina training but the Rockets need to get him motivated as soon as possible, it souldnt be too difficult now that he is in Dallas.
I'm a personal trainer - I would love to work on Yao to develop his athleticism to the level where he can be a dominant force in the NBA!! Give me a call Yao! But seriously, the thing that everyone has to realise is that it needs a gradual, consistent approach, it will not come in one summer. Having said that, it worries me that he is apparently so out of shape so quickly, I mean if your life is as a professional athlete, you can't just do nothing and wait until practice starts to get in shape. The off season is a time for rest but it is also a time for development, and if you look at Michael Jordan, he added some strength, agility, quickness, endurance and muscle mass every summer through dedication and hard work. He didn't use preseason to get in shape, he used the offseason to improve all aspects of his fitness and then used practice to regain his basketball sharpness. If you spend the summer regressing, then you have to work hard just to get back to where you were before, therefore you will never improve. How many people have stopped going to the gym, then come back and wished they hadn't been so lazy! PS Yao, I'm sure we can work something out, all I need is return flights to and from England for every session!
but i thought according to most people round here they justed want Yao to do No exercise at all in the offseason.. with there complaining about playing for CNT.. professional athletes can't afford to rest that much they must keep in shape with some cardio work and obviously in Yao's case some weights work and probably some work on footspeed and offensive moves.....
SageHare6, ROTFLMAO That was too funny. BTW, just got back from the World Global Games and Yao looks to be in pretty damn good shape. No fat but his condition could be better. I will have a full report up shortly.
