I am also curious as to how much money Yao really makes the Rockets. I mean, like you said, some of those revenues are shared with other teams. The reason Yao is currently on the team is because he is still under contract, a contract he signed when he was healthy and playing excellent.
Stop trying to explain to those idiots, they clearly chose to ignore the fact that les made money off Yao so why bother.
it's not necessarily just money. the exposure he provides for the rockets over in china is huge (and i'm sure the rockets make some money via that path; look at the players getting shoe deals b/c they play with yao). the rockets are on TV regularly in china.
You claim that Yao is a cash cow for Les without using any hard figures, yet accuse pggabriel quibbling over semantics? How is he supposed to argue against vague terms like "tons of money", "global icon", and "marketing machine"? Is there a dollar amount associated with any of those? Cite Yao's impact in terms of increase of net worth of the Rockets, while excluding the effects of team record and Tmac's marketing presence. That will be Yao's true financial worth to Alexander. I'm sure it's significant.
Let me completely revise whatever post you were reading then to say very clearly what I mean: Les...who happens to own the Rockets and is kind of a key decision maker with respect to that franchise's direction...is, in all likelihood, making lots and lots of money off the association of Yao Ming, a global icon, and the NBA franchise he owns, namely, the Houston Rockets....money he would not likely be making if Yao Ming's had never been associated with the Rockets.
You might be right Clutch, but I read it a little bit differently. They think they can win these games without him and want to get back into the race before the trade deadline to become a buyer instead of a seller, and that adding both AB and Yao back in at the same time could hurt the team that is operating on a very slim margin for error right now and needs wins desperatly. So, in order to salvage the season, I think they are going very slowly with Yao, and hoping to get some wins, then bring him along even more slowly once they have established a winning record. DD
You REALLY think all this is just a ruse to avoid disrupting our wonderful team chemistry? The same team chemistry that has us at 8-13? Opps, I forgot to mention our current "hot" streak. (5-5)
1. I never said Yao increased the net worth of the Rockets...though I'm pretty sure he does increase its net value. A buyer of the franchise (if it were up for sale) would absolutely be interested in associating with someone who has consistently been among the top athletes in the world in endorsement. There is "soft" value in that at the very least. 2. I also didn't intend for this to focus solely on streams of revenue to the Rockets; but rather streams of revenue to the Rockets owner, Les Alexander...whose association with Yao has opened up deals that were not available prior. 3. There's no way I can give you dollar figures. These are largely private deals.
So they think they can win games without him and want to get back into the race. But how does bringing him back even slower than they previously have not screw up the chemistry? And once we have a winning record they are going to THEN bring him back to screw it all up again?
Does Yao Ming make Les more money than your typical franchise player? More than Dwight, CP3, Melo, Wade, Lebron, or Kobe? How much more? Give evidence or cite figures, otherwise you have nothing to dispel pgabriel's doubt.
just show me the money Max. we've already established that NBA merchandise money is shared. so you can be cute, but just show me the money. again, this has been discussed here before. see look at like it like this, the NBA are socialists as well as the NFL, they share their wealth. Baseball are pure capitalists, and boxing is like operating in Russia.
By bringing him off the bench, and not having any restrictions on Adelman, there is still time to get into the race and get him healthy, so let the team go on a run as constructed and add him in later for the stretch run... I think the realized that having him play 24 minutes as a starter right away was a disaster. DD
I'm gonna be blunt when I say this: I really don't like Yao Ming the basketball player. Yao as a person is probably one of the all time great guys (to quote clyde) but as a basketball player mehh
Then how do you know it's "tons of money"? Are you guessing? If you are, how is anyone supposed to argue against your gut feeling?
Yao will now join Sampson as a massive "what if" for the Houston Rockets. On the bright side, we can move on and start over now.
 I can't "prove" any of it. I'm not really concerned with whether pgabriel doubts it or not. I have no numbers to cite to at all. I said, "you'd have a hard time convincing me that Les Alexander isn't making tons of money from his franchise's association with a global icon like Yao Ming." that's it.
I subscribe to the DD theory... Team is playing well. Minute caps are still a reality and don't really work.. Just let him work out till the last half of the season.
