SO hard on a player with his work ethic, enthusiasm, and love for the game. I hope the Rockets can resign him to another, preferably smaller, contract and have him come off the bench. He's a great player to have around
I never ever never asked you to prove me wrong. Never asked for it. Just stated my opinion. As an aside, see the post I made right before I made this one.
I love the guy as a person. So easy to root for. I'm ready to part ways...and have been for some time...as a Rockets fan.
Well obviously, if you read my posts you would know I am ready to move on too, however I don't like to pretend that Yao is only around because he is Asian and is a massive cash cow.
Any Rockets fan with half a brain would be ecstatic to have Yao for the MLE, low risk high reward signing.
We know he is a good baller when healthy, but we're all ready to cut ties and form a cohesive, regular lineup of our young stars that doesn't include him going in and out of it. However, we're all going to find out at the end of this year whether there is any credence to the "cash cow" theory when his contract negotiations happen. I'm willing to bet you that he gets another max deal, and I'm willing to bet you it won't be 100% because of how good he is at basketball. Yao for the MLE/Yao off the bench is a pipe dream and will never happen, ever.
This is not correct. I'm pretty sure Les PAID more for the Rockets in '93 than $80m. I think you are mistaking Rockets revenue with Les's worth. The Rockets revenue was exactly $80m pre-Yao, and now it is $156 million in 2008. The Rockets valuation is $469 million from $278 million in 2008. http://www.forbes.com/2008/12/03/nba-houston-rockets-nba08-biz-sports-cx_tvr_1203nbaowners.html pgrabriel There are ways to make revenue that are not shared. Les bought cable-rights to FSN with the Astros. And I'm pretty sure the fee Toyota is paying for naming rights is not shared. Do you really think Toyota purchases those without Yao. Also, the valuation of the Rockets has doubled since Yao. And doesn't he have deals going on in China that are outside the NBA.
I would. Judging from some of the almost hateful-sounding posts here (not referring to those of MadMax, who imho is just understandably frustrated and doesn't hold a personal grudge against the guy), some people would not.
Max, thats pretty much what I've said in terms of the cash-cowness. Yao opened alot of doors to les on the other side of the rockets, but those same companies in china wouldnt stop doing business because he traded yao. If thats the deal, then les used the knife and made a deal with the devil. Not calling china or les the devil, but you cant be tied to a player like that.
Do you seriously think he is going to get a MAX deal? That would go down as one of the worst signings in the history of the NBA. I would personally boycott this team, if Les did something like that it purely show that he isn't interested in winning one bit and only wants to earn a profit. Might as well just keep Yao and sign some league minmums and save payroll. No team is even going to come close to giving him a max deal, you have to be kidding.....
so why did reliant purchase naming rights, or minute maid, every pro stadium has a naming rights deal. The valuation of the rockets has gone up also, because of toyota center. thanks for the info on his value, I knew that was wrong based on the rockets alone. I have never doubted that yao has opened up business opportunities in china, you could probably do that through bribery though. uh oh
Why thank you the great prophet, what are the lottery numbers for next week? Look, I don't know why everyone is telling me that "we are ready to move on" as if I am not, is it because of my username? I am ready to move on past the "What if" era but unlike most of the fans on this board, I am not blinded by hate and I understand how a contract works. I certainly hope Les doesn't offer Yao the max, if someone else wants to, we will just laugh at them. We been trying to be optimistic about our health for a while now, why not continue to be optimistic and hope that Yao being the guy he is would sign the MLE?
Though your optimism is nice to see, I was able to give you a reply without being a smarmy, sarcastic douchenozzle, I'd appreciate it if you returned the favor. My inclination is that Yao gets overpaid, both in years and dollars. You disagree, fair enough, we'll see what happens this summer.
Because that is indeed a pipedream. He's much more likely to consider an MLE offer as an insult, and the other teams will laugh at you for offering that. MLE goes for players like Gortat rather than Yao, regardless of health. He might not recieve a max offer, but MLE or below is just unrealistic.
This IS oddly similar to the situation with T-mac last season...makes me wonder if T-mac isn't all that bad of a person (well, aside from the quitting on the court part). The biggest difference between Yao and T-mac is Yao keeps his mouth shut. Rockets' PR = would be awesome at running the news and media in North Korea. We don't know if what they're telling us is the truth or if Yao is done.
Sorry that I had to take it on you, but you should understand that I am quite pissed off, my former favorite player dogged this team, and my favorite player probably won't ever play any meaningful minutes for the Rockets again. We will disagree, I just can't see any owner willing to throw his team under the bus for some extra revenue especially since Yao is no where near the player was.
I like contracts to go to players who actually contribute on the court. If Gortat, a player who is hardly injured and can contribute on a nightly basis gets the MLE. Then why should Yao, a player who is older, obviously on the decline, and hasn't played a full season in over half a decade get more?
