right. IOW, vick (also a once-in-a-lifetime prospect) netted SD one additional pick among the top 50 over two drafts. but you mentioned landing 3 or 4 1 or 2's, and that's just not going to happen. they'll stay in the top 10 this year, and get a top 50 pick next year - that's about it. the rest of the picks will be third round or higher, where success rates drop dramatically.
I'm not looking for a top 5 pick in return though. They got a 1 and 2, along with a 3 and Tim Dwight for Vick. You don't think that #5 pick is worth a couple of mid 1s? If so, you've got 2 1st rounders and a 2nd rounder, along with a 3rd and Tim Dwight.
Lineman never get the publicity skill players do, especially ones on bad teams like UVA. Guys like Reggie Bush put up plays people want to see, you never hear people bragging about how a left tackle blocked someone.
you lost me... i think - are you advocating a second trade using the fifth pick obtained in a deal for bush? and it's your assumption that that pick would then yield two first round picks? there's a player sitting at 5 worth two first round picks? bush, apparently, isn't worth it (or why not make that deal initially), but the fifth best player in the draft is? has any team ever dealt two first round picks for the fifth overall pick in the draft? again, maybe i'm confused... SD was guaranteed a top 5 pick in the '01 draft. so, in essence, vick netted them one additional pick among the top 50 over the course of two drafts. if, in your opinion, tim dwight somehow augments that... so be it. but i don't see how a team lacking everything builds around one additional top 50 player, tim dwight, a tim dwight-like draftee (with the 3) and an eventual cut (the 5).
SD got the following for Vick: #5 overall 2nd Rounder 3rd Rounder Tim Dwight I'd argue that a #5 is worth 2 mid-1st rounders. SD wanted a top pick in return, but if they didn't, I think they could have gotten: mid-1st mid-1st 2nd 3rd For Vick. Similarly, you *might* be able to do something similar. It all depends on who has what picks and what they are willing to give up. If a deal like this presents itself, I think you seriously have to consider it. I don't know anything about the depth of this draft, so I don't know if that would be a good deal for this particular year.
I, too, am curious about this scenario. I realize that we have lots of holes to fill, and can't really afford to take best player available in later rounds...but it is quite enticing...
Casserly and Company will probably draft another Qb with a high draft choice that will never see the light of day.
and i'd argue you're dreamcasting, that no team would ever give up that much for the fifth best player in the draft. off the top of my head, i can't recall any deal in which a team gave up that much for a pick that wasn't #1 overall. and it's taking a big risk. you pass on bush by making one trade with hopes of making an additional one - well, what if it falls apart? i just think getting cute and trying to stockpile picks is courting disaster. even if it did work out, then you better hit on every one of those additional picks if you're going to disappoint an already apathetic fan base by not drafting bush. and that, too, is asking a lot.
