If that is the case, then some serious consideration needs to be done, because if we need a qb like you say, we should probably look into drafting Leinart.
If you replace "my Grandma and your grandma" for "running backs" on that quote, you still have a true statement. my Grandma and your grandma just don't have that much impact on won-loss record. a great grandma on a good team is great, a great grandma on a bad team still leaves a bad team.
Excellent. We are already getting a new coach and if we get a new rookie QB, then we are officially starting over. Those 4 years mean nothing, and we are now another expansion team. With Carr in there, you aren't starting over, you are hoping you can take what he has learned and with a new coaching staff apply himself to his full potential. I think everyone agrees that this team was better than their record this year, we just didn't play to our potential, so to me, "starting over" isn't necessary right now. We just need to get these guys playing to their potential and add Reggie Bush as a weapon. Not a running back. A WEAPON. A weapon who can run the ball, receive the ball, return punts/kickoffs, while still using DD to carry half the load at RB. Carr at his full potential, Oline address and coached, DD, AJ, and Bush. We would be one of the best offenses in football, no doubt about it. And I fully believe we can sneak into the playoffs NEXT year with that lineup combined with the right coaching staff. With VY we are starting over. Its easier to plug in a new RB and tell him to hit the holes and run than it is to bring in a new QB, teach him the entire playbook, and how the QB position works in the NFL. VY is a project. Bush is an instant weapon.
i just don't understand how people don't get that. we need a new OL. we need tons of new defensive parts. we're talking about replacing our RB with a brand new one. we need a 2nd option at receiver. so keeping carr is integral?? i just don't see it. i certainly don't see it to the extent that i would pass up on the opportunity of taking vince young, and all that could mean for this franchise both on and off the field.
NFL is a show business. Who gets you more money? Bush or Young. If you get Bush and you don't win, then what? You lose fans and forever place a bitter taste in their mouths if Vince becomes a world beater somewhere else. If you get Young and you don't win then what? You still get paid is what.
In hindsight I wonder how many people would be at this webcite had we drafted Sam Bowie and passed on Jordan and Hakeem without even fully evaluating the players? If that is what taking Bush and passing on VY becomes because the front office has their mind locked up on Carr/Bush being the future without fully evaluating all the options it is understandable IMO for fans to lose faith. I don't think stubborn, narrow minded, possibly arrogant and poorly run franchises should be supported just because they play in your city. Otherwise such franchises have no incentive to correct their faults. If the Texans have their mind made up and are not open to evaluating VY in person for the #1 pick they deserve all the criticism they get. You have to consider you are passing on the most dominant college football player in decades who has most of what it takes to be the most dominant pro player in decades. You have to be open to the possibility there is a transedent player in the draft and he plays QB. At a minimum brings the guys in and consider all angles even if in the end you stick with Carr/Bush as your future.
We are not starting over. 90% of you who want to kick Carr out of town did not feel that way until your local hometown hero and Texas Longhorn decided to come out. If you did feel that way, then you would have been for taking Leinart from DAY 1. I can't find any threads where people wanted to draft Leinart and kick Carr out of town the way this vincemania has come about. Our Oline isn't that bad, we aren't planning on rebuilding the entire thing, the plan is to get a few guys in here and then coach the oline to work together. We are not starting over just because of one underachieving season.
It has been said that Freaking Reggie Bush is the best, most dynamic college player in the past 20 years, and now you are telling me that he won't fill up Reliant Stadium just as well as VY?????? We haven't had a problem filling Reliant the past 4 years with neither VY or Bush, PSL prices are outrageous, there is a wait list for them and for season tickets. Why would that stop now?
In hindsight, in a way, we goofed because we didn't get the best player in the history of basketball. One who has sold more merchandise, put fans in seats, sold out opposing arenas every night, put Nike on the map, put Chicago on the map, and now has his own jordan/jumpman23 empire. Houston and the Rockets, and this message board would be a shrine to Jordan had he have come here, we'd probably have more fans than ever here, people would STILL be buying Rockets #23 jerseys. We went for a hometown guy who turned out to be a top 10 player in NBA history instead of The Man, MJ. Its hard to actually call that a goof, I know, but if you are splitting hairs here Jordan would have been the correct pick knowing what we all know now. All homerism aside. For those of you talking about bringing in VY because all of the money it would bring in and then you compare it to the Hakeem/Jordan draft, then you'll realize Jordan would have brought in tens of millions more than Hakeem did to this city. Go look on ebay for Bulls 23 jerseys compared to Hakeem 34 jerseys.
i can definitely find threads where people said we should get rid of carr and draft leinart. i remember reading it. but i wasn't among those, you're right. this team is starting over. it just is. it's not just the o-line. the defense is utterly awful. it's terrible. we haven't had a legit second option at receiver since we drafted AJ. our o-line has consistently struggled...is arguably the worst ever over that long a period of time. we're switching, presumably, our entire defensive scheme. we're bringing in an entirely new coaching staff. it's all changing. this isn't a "well, we had some injuries so we should be fine now that we're healthy" kind of thing. this team sucks. they were pathetic. they had 2 wins all season. they lost to teams like baltimore and sf. they're that bad. and honestly, that was somewhat a carryover of the end of the previous season. as for carr...i like carr. i agree, he can end up being a good QB in this league. probably not a great QB...but a good one. but not good enough to keep me from picking a guy that would be the face of the franchise in a way like this franchise has never dreamed. i think of analogies and the only ones i come up with are campbell and olajuwon. if he turns out to be nearly as good at the pro level as he is at the college level, this franchise will kick itself forever for not drafting him. because having that kind of star-power, particularly locally, would truly transform them. mcnair said he didn't care about being americas' team...he just wanted to be texas' team. i'm telling you, vince young gets you much closer to that goal. there are much broader goals to be considered here than who might have the biggest impact the year after they go 2-14.
reggie, we're are the worst team in the NFL and we have no coaching staff, starting over is the best thing you can say as regards the texans, really.
Staying power. After the initial flash, fans won't come back to watch Reggie Bush on a losing team. With the status quo, ticket sales are not going to be strong this next season.
After watching 80% of USC and Texas games all season I was saying Bush wasn't the best nor most dominating college player this year. It isn't about filling seats, I give you that. But to have the #1 pick and to lock on a 15-20 touch guy in college with the other talents around and perhaps the most dynamic college football player ever (VY) is dumb. Fully evaluate your options and they should include VY even if he does not become a Texan. Anything else and the front office people should be shot.
According to record we were the worst team. According to predictions we were a playoff team before the season started. We had some injuries(AJ calf), some bad coaching decisions(Palmer to OL?), some bad kicking, and some horrible conservative play calling. Good coaching with this same team could have been playoff bound like predicted by the experts before the season started.
You don't see the whole picture for wanting Young. First, I've been for kicking Casserly out of town since last off season. Casserly is the biggest problem. I never wanted Leinart or Bush. If Vince stayed in school I would definately be planning a trade. Carr is not the biggest problem on the team. The O-line is bad. period and improvement will only get them back to servicable. That would be nice for next season. The defense is attrocious- worst against the run and terrible as far as take aways and play makers. we have two young safeties that are both very raw and unproven, and Faggins is a horrible cornerback. There is no edge pass rushers and the interior defense stinks, no pressure up the middle to collapse the pocket. The offense is equally weak (o-line as noted) plus we need another receiver to replace Bradford who is horrible and we need a good tight end. Dominique Davis needs to stay healthy. Carr has shown to have a good arm, nice personality and bad QB rating- 62.8, 69.5, 83.5, 77.2. - we can blame that on the over all poor talent on this team-Carr has potential. But he doesn't have the on field leadership or he hasn't shown it for four years. We are 2-14 because Casserly has given us expansion league talent. He has made bad move after bad move. Dan Reeves is no talent evaluator and don't think NFL 'experts', scouts, and coaches are that good. Just look how many #1 picks start, how many #1 picks go to the pro bowl and how many #1 picks are in the hall of fame. If the so called experts were so good the hall of fame would be full of #1 picks. Most of the best skilled players in the league were drafted after the 1st round, so much for knowing who to take with your first overall pick. In David Carr's 2002 draft only 3 players from the 1st round are in the Pro Bowl this season. Peppers, Freeney and Shockey. I'm not impressed by what Dan Reeves sees, I think more about what I watched Vince Young do the past two seasons. I am not an expert at all, Young's talent makes it obvious.
You can also argue that Vince Young won't be a much better passer than Carr. Vince is not going to run for 200 yards a game in the NFL. He is not going to do QB sneaks and just take off whenever he wants. He is not going to throw from the shotgun every time. Rushing wasn't a problem but it could be a lot better. With Bush we are going to have a breakaway runner like Barber, Tomlinson, Alexander, etc. We can still use Davis in certain situations or trade him for something.
