Really? Is he already on the decline? Thats barely 1 point and two or three rebounds per game better than Yao, and I happen to know Tim Duncan plays a whole lot more minutes. What's up with that? (no. I don't watch a lot of spurs games. I hate them too much.)
Actually Duncan was coasting pretty much the entire season. They were resting him for the playoffs from the start ... he only played 33 mins / game. 3 more than Yao.
Nevermind that question. I went to the Spurs website and reviewed his year by year statistics. He is on the decline in pretty much every single category and has been for years now. Nevermind he's still good enough to lead a team to the Championship.
Van Gundy in Blazing Saddles "Excuse me while I whip this out" Scream from the audience... Sura faints.
I don't care what Swift averages this season. I just hope he and JH blend well together and the other newcomers come in and contribute. I hope our team chemistry hits it's peak right before playoff time, and we destroy someone in the first round on our way to the Finals (against the Pacers).
No, one does not "gotta" love anything about Mister Van Gundy. He has never won anything at any level, and it is just as valid to say he is covering his own behind should that lifelong trend continue.
He has yet, to miss the playoffs as a head coach. How many coaches can make that claim? I'd call that a win.
Especially if you consider that we play a slow-tempo type of game which means less rebounds to grab, it's hard to imagine any of our players can average 15 rebounds. I think if both Yao and Swift grab 10 rebounds per game, we will be in very very good shape.
Good lord. If that were to happen, I'd probably have a heart attack! And if it does, you should bookmark this, RocketForever... so you can crow about predicting it.
Definitely. If both Yao and Swift average 10 rebounds, I will start a thread at the end of the season just to remind everyone that I have said it first here on 10-2-2005.
When I first started reading the threat title, I thought it was going to be "Van Gundy whips out his wizard hat and rob."
If both Yao and Swift average 10 rebounds, I will cry tears of joy over our #1 rank in the Western Conference. Seriously, how often do two players on a team average 10rpg or more? What was the last team to even do that? The spurs? They had Tim Duncan and David Robinson, after all. Heck, I'd be happy if Swift averaged 8. Ecstatic if he got 9. But 10 would floor me.
haha I remember that vividly. In fact, I saved it to my computer, and I go back and read it over from time to time.
Adding Swift and Anderson (I don't think Head will see much time) will add to the uptempo possibilities. Look for us to have a much improved running game.
Just for fun, I used the excellent resources Clutch has provided us, and we had two players average 10 rebounds, or better, per game, and in consecutive seasons. (there may be more times that it happened, don't remember, but this was easy!) Ralph Sampson and Akeem averaged 10 or better during the '84/'85 and '85/'86 seasons. Here are the numbers: '84/'85 (rebounds per game) Ralph-- 10.4 Akeem- 11.88 '85/'86 (rebounds per game) Ralph-- 11.13 Akeem- 11.49 Not too shabby, folks. It can be done!
Well, then, the CEOs of Target, Kroger, Lexmark, CVS, Lowe's, Citibank, Avis, Cingular, Burger King, Chili's, Merck, Lucent, and Hollywood Video should all be fired. What about George Karl, Jerry Sloan, Bill Cowher, Bruce Bochy, Tony LaRussa, or Rick Adelman? Are they losers, too? #1 is the ultimate goal, but I don't think it's fair to say that #2 labels you as a loser. Of course, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, no matter how short-sighted they might be.
Rockets finished 6th, 29-53 in the midwest division in 1984 (http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/HOU/1984.html). In 1985 they were 2nd in midwest division, they made it to the playoffs, however lost in the first round 3-2 to Utah Jazz. In 1986, they were 1st in midwest division and only loss to Lakers 4-2 in the NBA finals. Based from the stat, the factors that made the difference do not seem to be the two players making double digits in rebounding, since they were doing that already in 1984, but still finish 6th in midwest and did not even reach the playoffs.
