Exactly the reason I think format wars are stupid and was (am) in no rush to get one format over another.

HD-DVD had some good word of mouth at the beginning, then BluRay starting pushing forward, now this. On and on and on and on...

I'm using PS3 as my main BD player
Crap now I have to buy the HD-DVD player for my 360 in order to watch Transformer in HD.
If you're still watching DVD (in 480p mode), you're missing a lot. Movies at 1080p is just wickedly awesome.

The best thing for high definition video was 1 format, whether that was HD DVD or Blu-ray. 2 formats will be just like the SACD vs DVD-A : no winner.

They were talking about how it was cheaper to replicate HD DVDs (since it can be made similarily to DVDs), not how it was cheaper to produce HD DVD players, which is what I was talking about.

The AVS forums are going crazy right now...

    BluRay fanboys are going nuts!

    "How can this be?"

"So much for the Blockbuster announcement signaling the death of HD DVD."

    "No Optimus Prime?"

I, for one, am a supporter of both formats.

I just want everything in HD, not that crappy up-converted crap! I was browsing at Fry's and this dude tells me that an upconverting DVD player isn't that far off from a HD DVD or BluRay player quality wise. I literally turned away and left the store only to return the next day to purchase "The Bourne Identity". and guess what? Same dude was telling a couple the same thing...

    Sad...

In related news the suicide rate of Paramount and Dreamworks stock holders increased 13%.

those dudes are making like $7/hr. what do you expect?

I go to Subway and order a sandwich and the guy forgets what bread I said.. like 3 seconds ago.

The only somewhat decent people are the Home Theater Store folk, they usually know what they are talking about.

huge news for HD for being able to do this. though i too am format neutral in having both players i prefer the HD format for its IME features. also i like the codecs they use better i havent seen too many really bad looking hd-dvds (though spartacus and goodfellas are not that good at all in terms of its transfer)

but with now 3 major studio exclusive to HD the format will be drawn out. I just hope dreamworks doesnt pull a fox and hardly release anything. thats one of the major gripes about fox and blu-ray. they are exclusive to BR but hardly release anything.

looking forward though to transformers in HD-DVD

Fox and MGM just announced a ton of titles for release on Blu-ray this year, including all of the Die Hard movies.

This is all JVG's fault. If he played our bench more last year and would have loved Bonzi and V-Span instead of hatin' on 'em, this would not be happening. The final straw for Paramount and DreamWorks was his horrible treatment of Kirk Snyder.

All this means to me is it will be a while before we purchase a hi-def player. When we finally do, it must play both formats.

I was too young to remember but was the VHS-Betamax war as intense as this one or not?

This will certainly drive demand for a hybrid player that will play both HD-DVD and Blu-ray. If a such a player existed for $300 or less right now, the sales of that device would wipe out competition.

I prefer recorders. I'll hold out.

They do exist, but not for $300 - more like $1000. If they existed for $300, individual players (either bluray or hd dvd) would cost $50. :D
