I'm getting tired of hearing about Schobel. There's two sides to every coin. Maybe the Texans could have paid 'em what he wanted, even if it was a little high priced. But if Schobel truly had a desire to play, why would he let a few million get in his way. He's not here, end of story. And they need to figure how to improve what they already have.
I agree. If you want to play, get in shape. If you want to get paid, get in shape. Bottom line he wasn't in shape to help when the Texans worked him out a few weeks ago. Dude hasn't been around an NFL team since December 2009.
Tank could be the worst NFL DT of all time but dammit, his name is sure convincing of his extraordinary football skills.
We needed him, he didn't need us. He got released, openly said that he'd sign with us or walk away. We decided to jack him around and so he went home. Why would he bother staying in shape? We sign him then, I guarantee you he's a starter today and our pass rush is rock solid. Gary "We're happy with the guys we got" Kubiak
i love how people assume it was the texans jacking him around and not the other way around. Why stay in shape in the offseason? maybe because he actually had a will and desire to play again. As is, he was going to do it just for another paycheck.
Why bother staying in shape? Maybe because that is a big part of playing football if that is what he wanted to do. He isn't young anymore, 33 to be exact, and it would have taken a while to get in game shape. He had no training camp, offseason workouts, etc. It also takes a while to learn the play book. If he was in shape, no doubt he helps this team. Adewale Ogunleye signed with the Texans after Week 1 and still isn't great shape and he hasn't done crap so far. Schobel is the better player but Ogunleye had 6.5 sacks last year before missing the last two games. Ogunleye took the league minimum and is was working back in shape and the jury is still out if he can help this team. Schobel didn't want to do that so both parties moved on.
You guys keep sticking on the staying in shape part - he made it clear - I'll sign with the Texans if they want me, otherwise I'll retire. He was ready to be done unless they made it worth his while to stay in the league. The Texans offered him a lot less than what he wanted to stick around. Why should he continue to devote himself to football? Had he signed on with the Texans and not kept himself in shape, that's one thing. But they declined, he retired, and that was the end of it. Of course he was out of shape some 6 weeks later when the Texans changed their mind. He wasn't worth the money to the Texans until it was too late. The grind that comes with playing in the NFL wasn't worth it to him for a $2M paycheck.
I'm still not sure why the Texans released Nixon. If they needed warm bodies at linebacker, and it's obvious they do, then why release someone who has at least been in the system for a while and has been on the field? Sure he isn't Ray Lewis, but no one you will bring in at this point will be either.
again, can someone provide a direct quote from him? i don't recall him ever coming out and straight up saying 'i'm either playing in houston or retiring'.
I don't think there was a direct quote. There was stuff like this: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/7135755.html More important, Schobel is close friends with his former Buffalo defensive line coach, Bill Kollar. Kollar enters his second season as the Texans' assistant head coach/defensive line. One of Schobel's close friends said Monday he would love to be reunited with Kollar and play for the Texans. http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=2297 Rumors have surfaced that the Texas native wants to finish his career in Houston. http://www.houstontexans.com/blog/index.asp?post_id=1289 Schobel told the Chronicle on Monday that his relationship with Kollar was a factor in his interest in the Texans. The best season of Schobel's career came under Kollar in 2006, when Schobel recorded 14 sacks, made the Pro Bowl and was named second-team All-Pro. If you listen to Lance Z...who apparently knows the Schobel family pretty well....that's the story, exactly. He was either going to retire or sign with the Texans...no other option.
so, iow, no direct quote from him saying it was texans or no one. i'm not going to crucify our front office for this.
not that alone...but you should crucify them...or at least be pissed .... at them for failing to address any needs on the defensive side of the ball in an uncapped year.
I could care less about Schobel. He wasn't in shape and was looking for one last check. Pass. I will crucify them for not addressing needs on the defensive side of the ball. Our Dline gets no pressure!!!!
