We don't really know if Budinger can handle the ball. It is possible that they may take a chance and cut Conroy. Then if something happens to Brooks or Lowry, they can sign an unemployed PG out there for a 10-day contract. I think Morey is probably kicking himself for getting Dorsey. It seemed like a low risk good potential pick up at the time. Now, if Les doesn't want to shell out the guaranteed money (plus whatever LT implications), he is forced to cut one of two good young players for depth.
LOL, I guess that came out wrong. I was referring to keeping conroy and pops, I'm not interested in either temple or beck or at least not in the extent of cutting someone to keep them.
We all knew it was coming, but sad to see Temple go. Loved his defense and underrated offense. Was hoping to see more of Beck too before he was cut. It sucks that Rockets have to keep Cook, or even Anderson (I don't understand the love for this guy), over Conroy. Pops makes the final cut IMO. His preseason play makes him the most deserving.
You're joking about Andersen, right? The guy is seemingly getting better with every preseason game, slowly adjusting to the NBA. He's gradually taking his range out to the NBA 3-point line (which definitely takes practice when you're used to the FIBA 3-point line, which is about 1.5 feet closer in). Sure, he's not good defensively, but we all knew that going into this preseason. He's an NBA quality center with good shooting range. Why would you want to cut him in order to keep a 3rd string PG? I seriously think people are developing little crushes on some players and developing irrational hatred towards others.
Interesting that the article mentioned the Rockets are likely to make a "territorial" claim on Temple for the Vipers, which they have on any player from TX or LA. Temple went to college in LA and I bet this fact had at least something to do with them picking him up in the first place-- of course, he had to be useful first, no matter where he is from. It kind of shows how the Rockets having control over the Vipers bball operations is a smart move. Now, Temple has already spent all summer and preseason with the Rockets in their system, and will likely spend more time with the same system in RGV (their competition for "territorial" claim for him is the Spurs),. While any other NBA team can pick him up from the D-League, to them Temple is just another D-Leaguer and to the Rockets, he'll be one D-Leaguer who is especially familiar with their system and can jump right in-- which he may not be able to do with other team's systems. He could be nice injury insurance or a possible call-up if a trade cleared roster space.
Hey Carl H, that's some good, reassuring info right there. Thank you! I'd never heard of this "territorial" business in the NBDL. Is that a formal designation?
The D-League has a number of ways for players to be acquired by the teams. Just a reminder, players sign contracts with the D-League... and not the individual teams. In the pre-season players are acquired by the teams in three ways. returning players (players from last season's team that they wish to keep the rights to), allocation players (players whose D-League rights don''t belong to anyone but because they are either from or played collegiately at a place of regional significance to the D-League team...can be assigned to a team that way), or through the D-League draft. (Players that don't have their rights obtained by any team through the allocation process, get placed into the draft. These can be rookies or veterans.) So to answer your question...yes.. If ends up with the Vipers.. it will be as a formal allocation.
^^ Nice explanation. Morey also mentioned the possible allocation of Temple in his interview, should he choose to go to the D-League. Of course, he can probably make more money playing overseas (Europe, of course, has the most lucrative league-- and lets not forget there is a Chinese team owner working out regularly at the Toyota Center whose team needs some serious help), but if he does so, the overseas league probably want him to commit for the whole season and won't let him out if NBA calls.
Sounds in the podcast like the Spurs would have equal dibs. Temple has an NBA 2's body, and athleticism to defend, run the floor, and slash. I hope he'll develop his outside shot and turn into our better version of Bruce Bowen. Best of luck to him.
Jarron Collins and Melvin Ely were cut or are about to be cut. we should consider one of them. They have legitimate size and some "proven" ability. Cut dorsey and add one. thoughts?
