It's funny to see Rockets' fans getting excited about a journeyman who comes back from a career injury.
I MEAN REALLY...........DID CD JUST REALLY SAY WHAT I THOUGHT HE SAID?????? NO KNEE-JERK REACTIONS........NO PLAN B........ woooooooo saaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!! woooooooo saaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!! what a absolutely great offseason......boy and that rockets front office sure doesn't sleep...... LES.................get us a real gm please....these offseasons are killing me softly..........how the hell do you not have a plan b????? Just wait for a few more free agents to get snatched off the list of a already weak free agent pool.........and while you're at it don't do any trades with our 2 trade exceptions....i mean what since would it make to rush about anything right now......CD you are a genius, absolutely priceless...don't sign and trade, just don't do anything until its to late and everyone else gets better
I think we will take our trade exemptions into the season, when teams really become sellers and salary cap room itself is enough to swing a deal. The MLE is another story, we need to use it, and we need to use it on one of these players: V-span, Trevor Arizia, Marcus Banks.... If those are all taken or unavailable then i'd go to Flip Murray, Melvin Ely, Jumaine Jones (can play both forward spots, crashingthe boards and shoots the 3 at 40%), and Demarr Johnson... If we can't sign any of these players then we better bring on Pat Carroll and JL3 from the summer league team. Ideally, in a perfect post, I'm mike james b**** world, i'd like to split the MLE on V-Span and Arizia. I'd still bring Carrol and JL3 over from the summer league team and resign Bogans. Yao Mutombo Bowen Jho Hayes Novak Battier Arizia Sura McGrady Head Bogans Alston V-Span JL3 That should give us enough in everything but offense in the starting 5. V-Span should benefit the most from the rules allowing smaller players on the perimeter more freedom. He looks like a pint sized poor man's Ginobli, i think he could be that guy off the bench to give us some punch. The reality is we are not gonna have much more on this team than we already have. Most gains will have to be to the maturation of Head, Yao, Hayes... The fit of Battier, and what Novak can provide. Its gonna have to overcome the loss of Swift and the decline of Mutombo and more importantly Howard (hayes starting is intreguing but i can't see it working in a 7 game series.)
There are so many different myths out there I've seen posted over and over again and I've been meaning to take time to address some of them. The idea that Sura was and will be a key impact player for the Rockets is one of these myths. The idea that Sura will make any significant contribution is way overstated to the point of being irrational. The guy has heart but the cold hard facts state that it amounts to little impact. Let's look at the data. #1: Sura's Player Efficiency Rating (PER) for 2004-2005 was 14.4. The NBA average is 15.0 which means that Sura contributed below average compared to the average NBA player in 04-05. The 4 players that had above average PER's were TMac (22.9), Yao (23.2), Mike James (17.4), and Deke (16.4). http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/HOU/2005.html #2: Sura's +/- stats for the rockets were: on-court +3.9, off-court +4.1, team net -0.2. What this means is that essentially when Sura was on the court he had overall no positive scoring differential impact for the Rockets compared to those who subbed in for him. http://82games.com/0405HOU.HTM It's time for folks to wake-up and smell the coffee. Sura returning means little to the Rockets in terms of filling in the huge holes that we have in terms of being a 3rd or even 4th key weapon. You might not like it but sometimes the truth hurts and right now it's hurting really bad this entire off-season.
I'm with Tango in his concern for Sura's recovery prospects. Earlier in the thread someone compared Sura's knee recovery to JKidd's. But JKidd did not have the history of injuries over the course of his career that Bobby has had prior to their respective injuries. I don't know about the Micro-fracture, but I've rehabbed from two complete tears of the ACL on the same knee, both after age 30. I want Sura back in top form, or even 90% compared to what we've got now. He's a bigger guard than anyone else but TMac, and regardless of the stats laid out above, I believe it's his chemistry with TMac and Yao and his hustle and aggression on both ends of the floor that make him so valuable to the team. If and it's a BIG IF... Sura comes back, close to his former level of play, then I'll be somewhat mollified about the MJames fiasco. But I have this to say about the MJ B.S.: Signing James was the ONLY thing that would have given many of us significant optismism after the Rox Mgmnt screwed themselves (and the fans) with the Battier trade... allowing MJ to get away when he was both Plan A and Plan A-2.0, demonstrated for me once and for all that CD is incredibly senile and/or incompetent. MJ's agent should have been asked "What will it take to get this done for the Rox?" And the agent would have then said "Trade exception and one more year!" It's an affront to all who care deeply about seeing the Rockets succeed that this becomes another excuse for other NBA fans/players/and front office staff to laugh long and hard at our organization!!!! Having said that, I'll root my hardest for Bobby Sura to come back all the way and take the Rockets past the first round. I firmly believe it's going to take someone with exactly his kind of hustle and intensity to finally get us there again!!!
Speaking of **** people get tire of... How about ignoring the fact that the Rockets would have had James' Early Bird Rights and could have offered more than any teams' MLE, wouldn't have had to worry about a trade kicker because they wouldn't have traded him in the first place and all of the so-called 4 "big money" teams with cap space never even looked at James. Now there's some **** to really get tired of.
agreed, and sura is a way more physical player then kidd, but if he can come back atleast 80% I think he will be of use for this team.
Per Nix 101: " It's funny to see Rockets' fans getting excited about a journeyman who comes back from a career injury." Sorry Mr. Nix 101-I do not find this amusing at all. Injuries are not funny, and Bob Sura did contribute as a leader when playing. We are very thin in so many spots-we need so much help. It is unlikely Sura can play again and that is sad for Rocket fans. Go back to your Laker, Dallas, or San Antonio board-do not gloat here. TROLL
I am not sure what is worse Our "Slow" front office which apparaently does not believe or is not prepared for Contigencies Or Our Slow guards of the past few years!
Well, that's just it. The data basically says that whatever chemistry or hustle Sura brings it really is pretty meaningless. At the end of the day he's a below average NBA player and his heroics only resulted in a +3 point margin differential. This is hardly anything to be excited about. Sura has never been a key piece of the Rockets.
Whoa whoa.... That article said Sura is shooting. Sura can shoot while standing still. It said nothing about the condition of his knees. If you some of you guys read that Barbaro was eating hay, you'd start placing wagers on Barbaro in the next race.
I hate that the Main plan is being HOPEFUL we HOPE Sura is ok we HOPE T-mac's back is ok we HOPE Yao is back to 100% we HOPE Novak came to play we HOPE battier fits in Some are high percentage hopes [T-Mac, Battier and Yao] but other are a stretch . .. and to be honest It is like playing 5 hands of poker at once we hoping for various cards on each the chances getting the right card in every hand is slim The problem that if one or two hands don't play out .. . we could be sunk totally Rocket River
Sura was a role player at the peak of his career- Now if he manages to come back he will be an old Scrub- The Rockets need decent athletic players to build the roster NOT OLD SCRUBS!
Glad to hear Sura and Yao are on the court...With a healthy team, Mike James wasn't needed...Having said that, we need to go to Plan C...
Yeah, I'm sure all the hard work Sura is putting in is just to help the Rockets on the court of public opinion. Sura has been waiting until the Rockets REALLY needed him before getting back out on the court.
He's better than Alston, he's better than Juwan, actually when healthy (hasn't been since 2004 in Atlanta/Detroit he's better than Battier. A semi-healthy Sura is debatle as being better than Battier, a healthy Sura is without question the 3rd best player on the Rockets. Don't be so condescinding. You take away the 3rd best player on any "contender" and they have NO CHANCE AT ALL of winning a title. Regardless of what stats people throw out or any diss or insult they can think of to Sura, he was a major loss.
Actually he would be the 4th best player considering our current roster as it stands. And that should be a big red flag for folks regarding the state of affairs for the Rockets if Sura is considered one of the key players for the Rockets and you are counting on a below average NBA player to make the Rockets a contender. Stats don't lie. The truth hurts. It's time to wake up and smell the coffee.
