Actually, no I wouldn't mind. Sorry to burst your bubble but not all of us Christians are that self righteous. I feel honored when someone of another faith prays for me or does something special related to their religion in honor of me or a group of people or just to pray for general safety and well being. I have no idea why someone wouldn't feelt that way.

It seems that some vocal Christians want to bring back social cohesion through the methods that have worked for them, whether through group prayer or scripture. It's the flipside to your atheism thread. Unfortunately , there are many who percieve secularism as atheism in disguise.

Schools have been the most aggressive front in this struggle. Public schools at all levels have been affected by outside influences. Science and Evolution without mincing its crucial principles should be taught, if only to prepare students for college. There's a lot of filler time in schools that could be used for classes that religious groups can approve such as a class on general theology and philosophy, and I'm sure there are a lot of interested students. Unfortunately, there's reactionary groups who would disaprove that as well. For them, their stakes are all or nothing.

Hey..I'm all for group prayer and scripture.

I've said it before here...I don't want public school teachers teaching my kid about God. I'll do that. He goes to Sunday School...we read his little kids' Bible and pray together at night before bed. All good. That's my job. Not the goverment's. And I don't trust the government to get it right.

For me, the key issue revolves around what that reverend said -- about how the overwhelming majority of Americans are Christians.

I agree that in some instances a common moral base would overrule the minority voice.

Like the argument mentioned above, how the overwhelming majority of people are against murder, so the opposing views of the few that want to kill have to be nuked.

I think that is correct, but only when it is something tangibly functional, like language for instance. English is the common language in the US despite great diversity in some areas. It's something that would probably not be worth trying to get around or "resolve." Just not realistic. Have to cave in to the majority.

But as far as the ten commandments display goes, what does it actually do? It stands for something sure, but it's not really needed is it? If it's absent, does it change the way Christians believe in their faith? America will only get more diverse as time goes on, so for me, the longer it stays there the longer it will perpetuate the idea, whether it's true or not, of "justice as seen by the white man."

it shouldn't. but it frustrates the hell out of me that many act like they will. if your faith is locked up in an "idol" at a courthouse or a state building, then it's not much of a faith to begin with. or it's at least misplaced.

Do you really associate Christianity with "white man"? Africa is about 45% Christian, Latin America around 90%. North America - around 85%. I would venture to say the vast majority of blacks and hispanics in the U.S. are Christian.

If you are talking about population when you talk about diversity, I would argue that America will become MORE Christian as blacks and hispanics become more prevalent.
