hopefully this is the tmac we see next yr in terms of looking to score. u RARELY see him at the top of the key. he's either in the post, on the sides, running off screens or isos...

obviously he's not gonna pull off those athletic dunks like that all the time, but maybe we'll see some next yr.

he was truly the best offensive player that year.

but score and take over the last minutes of the game. it's not overall points.

mike bibby is a guy that back then took over games. webber scored a lot of points but he wasn't that guy, bibby was for the kings.

nash scored a lot in the offense of the game and he's capable of that. but he's not a guy where u say, spread the floor out and let him score this one for us. i think that's what hurts phoenix.

A Nash pick and roll is as effective as any other player's isolation, in my view. I don't recall the Suns struggling to score at the end of games.

i just feel when i watch the suns at the end of games, nash usually passes off b/c he can't create his own shot all the time. and when the ball is not in your best player's hands the last 5 mins of the game for them to score, it's hard to win.

Well, looks like this is an offensive scheme that combines many elements from other schemes, including some variation of the Triangle, as said here:

"There are times, as in the triangle offense Phil Jackson has taken to nine NBA titles, after there is a pass to the post, the two other players on that side clear through. But in Adelman's offense, they as often remain on that side, spotting up at the strong-side 3-point arc."

The other thing I like about Adelman is he is a pragmatist, meaning he won't be stuck with an offensive scheme. He will adjust, tweak, maybe even change it radically to leverage the strengths of the players while alleviating the weaknesses. This is VERY different from JVG and many other coaches who follow a scheme and force players to adapt, regardless if whether the players can naturally adapt or not.

He passes off because he has the vision and will to make the correct pass, and he has some great offensive weapons around him.

82games.com shows player's stats in "clutch time" -- last 5 minutes of games and overtimes when the score margin within 5 points. Nash averaged 26.5 points and 9.6 assists per 35 minutes, with an amazing 65.6 TS% (154 total minutes). That's pretty good.

that may be true, but i just feel like that when i'm watching the suns. he's a GREAT GREAT shooter no doubt. but i feel the reason the suns don't go to the finals is b/c they lack that truly great individual offensive player. nash is a great PG but he's just not that guy.

magic had worthy and kareem. none of the suns players are great individual offensive players, but rather they succeed through their system.

that's just how i feel. that's why i feel they will never go to the finals.

Even though our defense isn't going to be as great as it was the past couple of seasons, I highly doubt this team will give up anything ridiculous like giving up 100+ per game like Phoenix does. In fact, as much as I hate to admit it, I think our team will be pretty similar to the Mavericks (100 ppg vs 92 ppg by opponents) in that we'll definitely score but the defense will be good enough to stop teams.

So, what you're saying is you like good defense AND good offense? Thank you for that brilliant revelation.

Here is something you often do.

You like to confuse offensive EFFICIENCY and PACE. You clearly favor pace. But you confuse the two, frequently, and use it to exaggerat your case.

" I favor good defense and good offense! Van Gundy only favored good defense" - Quite honestly, even you should realize that's a stupid thing to say.

Given the paucity of offensive talent on the Rockets last year (mcgrady for 70 games - for about the first 20 of which he sleepwlaked his way though , a half year worth of Yao, one good spot up shooter in Head - and a whole bunch of crap otherwise) - middle of the pack offensive efficiency is about as good as a logical individual could expect. When you are starting Chuck Hayes and Dikembe Mutumbo- things are not good. It was a personnel issue. EVERY coach designs his offense to create open shots. When the Rockets players miss open shots, as they did frequently last season, probably more than I have ever rememberd, it is definitely not a problem with the offense. It's a problem iwth the execution, in which case you upgrade the executers (whidh the Rocketes realized, so they did).

The teams that have dominated the post season have all been very good to above average in efficiency on offense (e.g, last year's 4 conf finalists: Detroit 6, Cleveland 19, SA 4, Utah 3) (by way of comparison, the Rockets placed 14 - but the thing they all have in common is that they play a slower pace, which is really the way post-season basketball has been since the mid-1990's and shows little sign of changing. (Spurs 27, Pistons 30, Cleveland 18, Utah 15).

This has been the way things have been for quite a while (Miami was a slow paced team in 06, Spurs were in 05, Detroit was in 4). So, you can claim all you want that a slow, defensive oriented half-court game is not th way to go but reality gives a lot of countervailing evidence.

The Mavericks were 28th of 30 teams in terms of pace (Rockets 22nd) and 5th in terms of defensive efficiency.

The 2007 Mavericks were a lot more like the 2007 Rockets than they will be like the 2008 Rockets (and they both lost in the first round..)

again it's not really the stats. it's how EFFICIENT we're gonna be on both ends.

but the thing about this team that i like is that, like the spurs, we can adjust to ANY team. teams that play fast, we'll play fast w/ them if we want and don't have to ADJUST to them. but then we switch it up and play SLOW and FORCE THEM to adjust to us.

a great team should never adjust their style to another other team. dallas did that v. golden state and that showed their fear by switching up their starting lineup.

Nash is very good at creating his own shot. He can run off picks, hit treys and finish at the basket with either hand. But his instincts are to create and pass the ball. I don't think any player in the NBA sees the floor like him. When the Suns other players are struggling, Nash will take over games when he has to. On offense, Nash is almost the perfect PG.

i think dallas had a better efficiency offensively though. they lost last yr not b/c they can't beat the warriors. it's b/c they showed fear right away and nelson took advantage of that. i can't believe johnson changed his year-long lineup for just a a series.

i agree. but he can't create his own shot INDIVIDUALLY. like get out of my way and let me take over. that's not him.

he needs the pick to beat his man usually but then that brings the double and he has to pass.

that's what i feel the suns lack. that guy that could just straight up dominate a team and just destroy their confidence.

They definitely had better efficiency - they had a poit guard who can score, among other things.

Again you guys are confusing efficiency with pace. Adelman is not bringiing in a system that is designed to be more efficient. EVERY system is designed to be 100% efficient. He is definitlely bringing in a system designed to have a higher pace which means more transition (and less transition defense, as he stated in one of the articles yesterday).

exactly. i have said we're not gonna turn to phoenix where we RUN RUN RUN everytime we inbound the ball.

we're run when it's there. we'll take the quick jumpers if they're open. but primarily we'll still be half-court (but a much more efficient half-court offense) w/ cuts and movement.

I am not confusing pace with efficiency, I know the Rockets defensive efficiency was really good, they led the league in FG% defense.

It is offensive efficiency that was below par....

All I care about is the team plays well, not faster.....

I don't prefer fast-break ball, I like smart picks and rolls and back cuts ball....

    Smart ball...

wasnt their starting 5 tops in the league in effeciency?

The problem was when they had to go to the bench.

true. the way JVG ran his offense => it had ZERO movement. so when we played utah in the playoffs, our starters' efficiency went down too (from tmac to yao to even rafer, who u thought could't get any worse).

a static offense is not that successful in today's style of basketball.

spurs went from avg in the 90s back then to now avg 97-98ppg. they can play both styles.
