Rockets Dynasty, You're new here so let me explain something to you. I respect your opinion but let me tell you just because somebody disagrees with you, simply acting disgusted and saying something brief and stupid in response without any support or backing doesn't make you informed or prove anything. I encourage you to disagree with me. But disagree with me with an actual argument not this "Oh my god no, simply wrong" crap you've been using throughout this entire thread. ANYWAYS....... What are you even disagreeing with this time? I'm a little confused since I didn't in any way hint that as a college player he didn't ever not draw the opponents best defender? Obviously by pointing out the fact that he functions in an offense designed to get him open I am acknowledging the fact that teams clearly had to respect him. So what's your point? ....and on the NBA level, as long as he's on the court defenders would have to respect him. I don't think assigning an opponent to chase him around and harrass him would amount to "1/5th" of the defense he saw in college. Its not like NBA teams would be foolish enough to dare him to shoot.
We've got veteran posters here who do worse and know less about the game. I'm not his defender, but your words should apply to everybody. You should be able to see this guy has good basketball knowledge.
I do see he has basketball knowledge and I pointed out that I respect his opinion but what I can't stand are some of the dubious and unsupported brief responses he's been using. Rockets Dynasty, you know you're stuff but if you're going to disagree with me then argue your points better.
Say what? So Tracy isn't going to say we need another scorer because he doesn't want to give up any shots because he's the "big banana" of our offense? Do you realize how stupid this sounds? Like everyone else, Tracy wants our team to win. He's made it plain scoring titles and the like don't mean anything to him now. The guy could stayed in Orlando and won more scoring titles. But instead he demanded to come to Houston because he wanted to be on a champioship team with Yao, who is (guess what) another scorer. But maybe you have an insight into his mind nobody else has.
My argument is I would rather take a the more versatile player capable of doing many things. A player who doesn't need to rely on any one characteristic or ability to be effective. A player who is more of a complete player. Judging by your analysis of Brewer you must agree with me. .....and the Ray Allen example is off. Sure, people talk about his sweet jumper but they also give him proper praise for being the great athlete he is thats capable of doing plenty of things well and carrying a team.
DD- So just because he was athletic, we should have kept him? I guess talent has nothing to do in this debate. JVG said he wants more size and athleticism on the perimeter, but that doesn't mean just any guy who is 6'6" and has a 40 inch vertical, the talent has to be there too and it wasn't w/ Graham.
Huh? When did I say Redick's numbers don't count? His 28ppg is certainly impressive, the kid has the ability to shoot the ball. It is his 2rpg 2apg and poor defense that concerns me. I'm just pointing out that 2 of the potential players we are looking at averaged around 18ppg 5rpg 2-3apg while Graham was doing 6ppg 3rpg. There is/was an obvious difference in talent which DD is dismissing when trying to make a point about athleticism on the team. Here is Josh Howard's numbers at Wake: 19.5ppg 8.3rpg 2apg 2.5spg 1.5bpg. What's the point you're trying to make?
Oh look what I've missed in a couple of days. Let me present a comparison between Redick and Brewer again. Individually: Redick: As quick as Brandon Roy and Dwayne Wade in ahtleticism measurements. Not as explosive in jumping. Taller and younger than David Wesley. Will be a defensive upgrade. Has the phsical attributes to be an adequate defender under JVG. On offense, proven scorer and a great shooter. Can create his own shot with a little seperation. Can cause opponents to adjust due to his shooting prowess. Can change a game with a barrage of long distance bombs. Great chance at being an impact player on offense. Being great at shooting in college is very easy to translate into the NBA. NCAA player of the year and all time 3 point shooting leader. Bottomline, definite big wow on offense. Brewer: Bad and incorrectible form on shooting. Relies on his athleticism to score. Prone to fade fast with age and injury. Has not translate his athleticism in college into an exceptional edge on offense. Did his scoring against inferior SEC players as opposed to Redick's ACC players. Has shown being an all around player but nothing outstanding on college level. 5 rebounds a game under heavy minutes doesn't wow anyone. 3 assists are nice but doesn't wow anyone. 18 points are nice but doesn't wow anyone. Not being able to translate his athleticism in college into a wow factor but needs to do it in the NBA. No wow factor, only question marks. Bottemline, question marks as to his exact defensive ability as well as offensive ability. On defense definitely better than Redick but for how much isn't sure. On offense bears a big question on whether he can develop a shot with bad form and whether he can be a consistent threat on slashing against NBA players instead of SEC players. Harder to translate his offensive skills into NBA success unlike proven outstanding shooting of JJ Redick. Questions on both ends of his game as to a projected picture on his future impact, Brewer can be an all around player with good defense and does things to help the team, but may lack the punch to be an impact player on both ends of the floor. It's sure Redick can change a game in NBA with his shooting, if defense or offense can change a game in NBA for Brewer remains to be seen. Last time the Rockets had a big player at his position with superb athleticism yet failed to be a defensive presence, his name is Steve Francis. Fitness level for both players on the Rockets remains to be continued.
That's a big call considering Wesley was arguably the best defender on the team. Jon Barry is 6-5, so by your reasoning he should of been a defensive upgrade since he had the physical attributes to be an adequate defender under JVG.
(panda) Will be a defensive upgrade. Has the phsical attributes to be an adequate defender under JVG.(panda) dude please tell me you are kidding i mean please please please tell me you whatched JJ play he plays some of the absolute worst D possible at the collegiante level can you even imagine the horror of him trying to guar kobe or d wade! It gives me the chills just thinking of it!!!!
This is a painful misnomer. Who were the top perimeter defenders in the ACC this year? Jared Dudley is solid, but the kid from Wake? Dowdell from VT? The ACC was very down this year and even the year before did not have top-level defenders on the wings. In the SEC, Berwer was defended by Corey Brewer, Tasmin Mitchell, Alonzo Gee, and others. It's arguable that the SEC actually had better wing defenders this year, let alone "inferior" players. I still don't understand why someone have such an axe to grind in their defense of Redick. It's not like people are bashing him, but rather suggesting Brewer has a more well-rounded game and can fill multiple roles for this team. But you seem to like treating Brewer as a inferior player himself. How much have you watched him play? Against whom? I've probably seen him as much as Redick and I just cannot see the Rox passsing on Brewer if he is there.
How is Redick a defensive upgrade? Wesley was actually a very good defender the season before last but injuries and age has made him a liability, but I don't think it is 100% that Redick is/will be a better defender right out the gate. Panda- Please show us how you came to the conclusion that he is prone to fade fast with age and injury? I would really like to know. As for the shooting form, see Shawn Marion. Actually, there are very few question marks concerning his defensive ability. He is already known as a very good defender and has all the tools (size, athleticism, long arms, etc...) to continue to be a good defender in the NBA. I love how some of ya'll make Redick out to be 100% bust proof stating that "it is sure he can change a game in the NBA," but we'll have to wait and see on a guy like Brewer. So just because Steve played bad defense, we should just dismiss all players w/ size and athleticism?
Actually who Redick reminds me of is a right handed Chris Mullin. Not the biggest, fastest or most athletic guy around but give him an inch and he'll knock down a shot from anywhere. Watching Redick play on tv and checking out the video on him, you gotta admit he gets that jumper off quick and he has otherwordly range on that jumper. After watching the Rox miss open jumper after jumper this past season, getting someone to knock down shots would be nice. As for the weak draft statements, that usually means there's no Lebron or superstar leading off the draft. But there are some solid players out there. We should get a player at the #8 spot, but TMac he won't be. After reading so many pages here though on Redick vs. Brewer you can count on the Rox drafting O'bryant or Simmons though.
I was hoping for post 1000, but I guess I just don’t have the patience. Here is my take on drafting Reddick. But first the disclaimers, 1) I don’t watch college bball. So all opinions I express are based on what I have read on this site or the mock draft analysis. 2) I guess I have lower expectations of the number 8 pick in a weak draft. I certainly hope he plays, but I don’t expect a starter. Well, not a starter for a team that expects to make some noise in the playoffs. There is no perfect choice with our No. 8 pick (no matter what DD says ), that’s why we aren’t coming to a consensus. Everybody has some holes in their game. Hey it is number 8 in six deep, weak year. Reddick – my top choice. Here is what I am hearing. Great shooter, hard worker, and very competitive. That seems like enough to work with. His strength is absolutely our weakness. Think about how well the Rockets play when someone is canning the J. Remember the end of one year a while back when Walt Williams (a poor defender by the way, or should I say a very one-dimensional player) got hot for about 30 games. We were tuff. If you don’t go back that far, think about last year when Wesley got hot (about 3 games, if I recall after coming back from injury). When we hit our open shots, we tend to win, I just don’t se anybody being able to argue with that statement. I see Reddick coming around a pick and being option B. If Yao can put it in, he does. If he can’t, he finds JJ popping around a screen. Same for TMac. Shoot or drive to the rack, if he hits a road lock, know where JJ will be coming free and dump it there. The bottom line is I expect our offense to flow with Reddick in there. As to defense, I think he will be good enough / smart enough to be able to funnel his man to the help side. That is not everything I want, but I can live with it. Brewer – I like everything I read except that he has a deformed shooting arm. For some reason that really bothers me. I fear he will be another Luther head. Decent player (maybe Brewer will have a position) but not the ‘make them pay’ scorer that we want to surround our big two with. I also worry that DrafteXpress and NBADraft.net (two sites I like) project him as 11 and 16. Marcus Williams - I like this pick a lot. It is kind of a sleeper for me. I like Alston, but I am not yet convinced that he is a 40 minute a game player. As a rookie, I could see Williams as a solid 15 to 18 minutes a game player. I really don’t know much about him other than he is the highest rated point guard. I may have my Chris Paul blinders on, but I wouldn’t mind a good young ‘true’ point guard at all. Maybe he will be fast enough to slow down the quick point guards who kill us (speaking of Paul). Sheldon Williams – He was “our pick” in the early mocks. When I read the descriptions, I drooled. But somehow now I am not seeing it. I fear he will always be another ‘not quite good enough’ PF and we already have two of those. Unlike most here, I think Howard is acceptable. Clearly he is getting older each year and that is an obvious problem. I would love for Howard to be our second string PF. That would be a deep team. Unfortunately Swift isn’t good enough to push him to the bench and I don't think Williams can either. I wanted to draft Swift, I didn’t like him when he was with Memphis, I got really excited when we bought him, but man, am I disappointed now. Foye, Simmons, Carney, etc – I would rather have Brewer. Basically I am happy with any of the top three. The only one I see really making an immediate contribution is Reddick. I take him as the best of the batch. That is really weird for me, as I love good defenders and players with an all around game. I just don’t see anybody as being better. Maybe somebody will drop. By the way, I don’t buy the argument that he is good, but not at the number 8. If he is what we need, take him at any slot. I am also excited about our 2nd round pick. I like Dee Brown, Pittsnogle, and PJ Tucker. I think Brown can contribute off the bench, Pittsnogle is a worthy project, and Tucker will be a good career bench player (ala Royale Ivy). I think that at least one will be available. PS to baller4life 315, read the third segment of your sig. See if it effects your arguments.
That is why he would be prone to fade with age or injury. Guys that rely on their athleticism don't age as well as guys that rely on their skills, because you get slower when you get older, but you can still shoot/pass/etc as well as you used to.
I see your point but I think saying that Brewer is prone to fade w/ age and injury just because he uses his athleticism to his advantage is too speculative IMO.
