After watching the Mavs, I am more convinced more than ever that Redick would be the worst fit for us. We need to address our size, speed and athleticism needs first. Drafting some one like Carney or Gay would give us someone with physicality and while they might not be the perimeter shooter JJ is, they'll give us enough. Drafting Redick would be like buying an Humvee to race in the Indy 500.

im sure they are both quicker than juwan howard.

Bird ran the break also for the Celtics, he couldnt be that slow.

    look,

we need to draft anyone who can hit an open jumper. this isnt like we're trying to buy a luxury vehicle, its more looking some cheap KIAs, we need anything that can get the basketball into the hoop.

I don't believe you missed anything. I'm not sure what he's talking about. I even did a search for "YMCA" on every single page of this thread to see if maybe I made a post that got misconstrued or something, but nope. DaDakota and some other poster whose name I don't remember are the only two people that brought it up in 29 pages of posts.

Bird was the most unathletic small forward in the league by his own admission. He freely admitted he couldn't jump over a piece of paper. There may not have been a more unathletic player in the league at that time besides Mark Eaton. Anybody that was a fan during that time remembers the sniper shots Zeke took at Bird, claiming the only reason he was in the league was because the league showed him favoritism because he was white. Not to mention all the other black players who wouldn't identify themselves but hid behind the cloak of anonymity with reporters when interviewed about Bird and their comments were mostly that he was way overrated and officiated differently than them.

All the while Bird kept talking trash to them during games, psyching them out and draining 23 footers over their head, or using the quick up fake and first step he developed from years of draining jumpers and having defenders jumping early to try to block his shot to drive inside with relative ease and then knock down some dipsy doodle shot while the defense stood around and watched because he was so unathletic and looked so stupid.

A lot of people here way overrate athleticism and underrate skills.

Anyone else tired of posters using players like Larry Bird and Magic Johnson to make a point about JJ Redick?

Not only are they 2 completely different players, you're negating the fact that both Bird/Johnson had so many attributes to offset their lack of athleticism. Both Bird and Magic had handles and passing ability Redick could only dream of, they weren't limited to just shooting jumpers or pump fakes. They could hurt teams in so many different ways, that really isn't the case for Redick.

We were 8th worst team in the NBA last season, I would hope we are looking for the "luxury vehicle" versus the "cheap Kia." I mean, considering both will cost the same, wouldn't you want the "luxury vehicle?"

Hopefully we won't be picking in the lottery anytime soon in the future. With that said, I hope we just go w/ the bpa rather than who fills a need. If Redick is deemed as the bpa at #8, then so be it, but I don't think that will be the case.

Larry Bird - 6'9" small forward
Magic Johnson - 6'8" point guard

So yes, I'm tired of it too.

Here's a quick counter-request: what percentage of John R. Wooden Award winners (college Player of the Year) failed to become at least solid contributors to their NBA teams? By the way, here are some of the winners: Jordan, Bird, Duncan, Sampson (twice), and JJ Redick.

Athleticism isn't everything. Sometimes skill and character count for just as much or more.

Name all the players that have been drafted in this league that are 6'6' to 6'9" that were drafted on athleticism and busted.

Name all the unathletic guards under 6'4" that were drafted in the lottery? How many of them panned out?

This thread has gone so many pages. Redick is the most talked guy in this board now. If he is drafted by Rockets, he better not be a bust. He could only be allowed to become a great player, if not, I do not know what gonna happen in this board.

i think JJ ll be a good fit for us... we should draft what we need most first...
imagine we bringing in Shaq to this team along with Yao, we still wont go anywhere.. why? we dont need shaq since we have Yao...so my point is draft
    what we need most :)
