I don't understand what you want then. Looks like you don't think any rookie will help us out next year and you don't think we can get a veteran SG this offseason even though we have signed serviceable ones in the past (Barry, Wesley). Some just may never be satisfied with anything.
Redick is the answer for that 3rd scorer we desperatly need. Those of you that disagree are just wrong, and wallow in ignorance. There is no other opinion about this matter, CASE CLOSED !!! REDICK !!!!!!!! DD
JVG himself has sort of put the kibosh on V-Span when he spoke about his inability to play defense. His tone of voice was almost dismissive in nature. My feelings on him have always been the same as those for Badiane: bottom line if these guys could play in the NBA, them they'd already be over HERE playing NOW. As for Reddick, perhaps I should have said that I don't feel that he possesses the athletic qualities to matchup well against the other SGs in the Western Conference. I have no doubt that he's an elite college player but I have serious quarms about his ability to play effectively in the NBA considering those players he'd be matched against.
I just don't understand this: If JVG is such the defensive guru that he's been hailed as, he should be apt enough to devise a zone defense scheme that allows JJ to guard the perimeter - something he's definitely athletic enough. Given the scouts' interpretation of his one on one defense, it's definitely something he should be able to do. As far as V-Span goes, I've only seen highlights of him, so I can't really pass judgement, but I've always thought he had fairly good defense. In fact, I believe he averaged like 2 steals a game in Europe. It may not translate well, or something, but I don't think we should write off a player because of one comment a coach makes. And if the coach writes that player off without giving him a chance, that's his failure as a coach.
Ginobili didn't come over until he was 25 despite being drafted a couple years before that. Drazen Petrovic didn't come here until he was 25 even though he was drafted a couple years before that.
No, you misunderstand my position here. Whomever they pick with the 8th pick will help them in the aggregate sense because this team is so talent poor. And I'm certain that CD can/will go out and find another warm body to play the SG position because he's proven that he can go out and find warm bodies. But, for the Rockets, that would be doing business as usual and that's no longer good enough. Considering the teams ahead of us it has become imperative that we begin to look at fielding a team that is capable of matching up with them and that we be able to counter what they might throw at us. It's also vital that we start making them counter whatever we are doing on the court. This will require far more than the piecemeal approach this team has taken in the past. Simply fighting to make the playoffs as a low seed is just not good enough. The major objective for this organization should be to contend for a championship. To do that, they will have to step up to the plate and do what it takes to get the job done. I understand that this won't be a quick nor an easy process given the level of competition they face within their division and the conference but it's something I'd like to at least like to see them start doing now rather than 2 years from now.
So what you're saying is that because they did it, V-Span can do it as well, right? OK, anything is possible but please explain what makes you believe that V-Span will be another Ginobli or Petrovic. He's a pretty good European player I'll grant you that but where does that indicate that he'll be a good NBA player?
This newbie named 'Rockets Dynasty' has got me thinking about Redick. Imagine having a guy that hits the 3 again. It's been a while, but can you remember a shooter we've had since Kenny Smith and Horry? One of those guys that puts it in when they should? Maybe this Redick kid is what we need to make teams pay for helping out on Ming/Tracy. I think we could get Redick at 12. I hope New Orleans wants to trade two picks for our #8.
"bottom line if these guys could play in the NBA, them they'd already be over HERE playing NOW." I was just giving specific examples of how prospects are left to develop before they come over.....when they're ready. It's clear that 2nd round pick Ginobili and 3rd round pick Petrovic needed to work on some things before they came over. Isn't that what VSpan has been doing?
Wow, lots of Redick love going on... I'm not a Redick expert, but I've seen enough that I don't think he is a good pick at #8. His whole offense is running around screens! I will say his shooting is nothing short of amazing. I think he's a top three NBA shooter the minute he enters the league. That said, I don't think he'll be able to use his shot as a weapon like he did in college. NBA guards are quick and long enough (And the line is far enough back) that they don't have to suffocate him to keep him from getting shots off. The difference in closing speed at the NBA level is astounding. I mean, watch the Mav's play. Individually, they're mostly all below average NBA defenders, but when they're on their game, they give up very, very few totally open shots. Their closing speed on the perimeter is just that good. Anyone that thinks JJ Redick will be anything more than a terrible defensive player is wrong. He just doesn't have the tools to be a successful defender. Too short, too slow, too weak. Kirk Heinrich is a terrible comparison, as Heinrich was an excellent college defender with excellent quickness. Even in the NBA, Heinrich is definitely an above average athlete. If we trade down to, say, 15 and get an extra first rounder next year, then I say take him, but #8 is just too high to take such a defensive liability. The front office needs to take note of the trends developing in the league, especially since the league is very happy with these trends(Faster game, more scoring, higher TV ratings, etc...). The Mav's, Heat, Suns, Spurs, and Pistons(The league's five best teams) all throw some assortment of long, athletic, swingmen on the floor. Not one of those teams plays a one-dimensional shooter(Or one-dimensional anything, for that matter) regularly. Obviously, if someone drops to us, you take him, whether it be Roy, Gay, Thomas, etc... We're probably slightly out of range for these guys, so my man is still Rodney Carney. The guy is a great spot-up shooter, and honestly that's the only three-point shooting that our #8 pick will be doing. We're not going to throw JJ around screens Rip Hamilton style when we have Yao in the post and Tracy on the perimeter. Our #8 pick needs to be able to contribute in other ways...slashing to the whole, rebounding, on defense, and Carney has the tools to do all these things. Say YES to Rodney Carney!
Air Bull, Walt Williams, Maloney and Brent Price at times, Elie to name a few.... There's no doubt that this team needs those kind of guys though. I would love to get Redick. If we could get him at 12 while picking up some extra pieces to move down, it would be amazing.
The more I read about JJ Redick, the more I want him on the team. After watching his highlights on Youtube, I'm impressed, and I think he'll be a perfect fit for the Rockets. The guy has some awesome range. He can flat out shoot from anywhere. Hopefully, he won't get pick higher in the draft.
Anyone who thinks Redick will not be a very good pro are just insane. And, Iverson is too short to play SG, and so is Calvin Murphy. And, Pistol Pete will never have a good NBA career because he is not very quick. Or Michael Redd is too unathletic to play, and so is Mike Miller. Or Barkley is too short to play PF, or Dirk is too tall to play on the perimeter. Guys, it is all about being able to play the game, not about size, or numbers, but knowing the game and where to get yours....Redick is the answer. DD
I have gone back and forth on Reddick. I like his shooting. I love the fact that he can put the ball into the basket from 30 feet. He is going to provide space for YAO for T-mac and for Rafer to get to the Basket. Will he be a liablity on defense? More then likely Kobe can go for 50 againist JJ, but that is better then the raptors did. JJ seems to evolving his game. Like Morrison teams went out to stop him night in and night out and he still put up great numbers with some acceptions. I like his work ethic and his attitude. I like that he take losing personally. I like brewer as well. I like Carney. I think they all can bring something to the Rockets. My biggest issue is picking JJ at 8. If we get down to 14 or something in that range I am for it. There is no magic bullet in this draft but JJ has drive and that will go far. trade with New Orleans 12 and 15 for 8. We draft at 12. J J Reddick at 15 Cedric Simmons. At 32 James White. That would be a great draft and something to really get us started again.
Iverson- Unbelievable scorer and ball handler, can score in a variety of ways. Calvin- Look at AI, great ball handler that could create on his own and for others. Pistol Pete- Great ball handler Michael Redd- 6'6" SG Mike Miller- 6'8" You're right, it's not all about size or numbers, but the guys you used for examples are much different than Redick and all had other attributes that contributed to their success. I wouldn't be mad if we picked Redick, but I'd rather it be on a trade down.
The point is that Reddick has a unique quality too, he can SHOOT better than any of them..... He has a gift, and all of those players were examples of non-traditional players who not only excelled but exceeded the draft experts. Redick will too, he will become a very good NBA player, and I hope and pray it is on the Rockets... DD
I like the Redd comparison. He is less athletic than Redd, but he's a better shooter. However, I think his best comparison is Drazen Petrovic. Lights out shooter, around the same height with an extremely great desire to play.
