The more I think about it, the more I think JJ Redick would be a really good fit on this team. There isn't much argument that we need a shooter on the offense and he fits the bill. My main concern with JJ is that he won't be able to play defense against the big SGs of the league. Looking at all of the bricks on wide open shots last year by Wesley and Alston and Bogans and Head,etc... and the Rockets scoring 80 pts or lower routinely..I see that we really need to be worried about the offense and shooting, especially when Tracy and Yao are both on the floor. Defensively, nobody can shut down the likes of Kobe and guys like that, you just have to bother them a little and do a good job defending their teammates. We were actually a pretty good defensive team last year (like 4th in ppg) with a 6'1 12 yr vet in David Wesley playing the 2, so I think Redick would be good enough on D to be the starting SG for years to come.

BTW - this guy shoots free throws like Peja or Nash. That's a good thing to have in an important game situation.

Aw jeez DaD! Have you forgetten that the Rockets play in the Western Conference? Having him on the floor won't stop the better teams from doubling TMac or Yao. They'd simply put a body (and it would be a bigger faster body - Marquis Daniels comes to mind) on him and force him to either try to make his own shot or drive to the hole which is simply not something he does very well. He's a very good, no he's an elite COLLEGE player but we are talking the NBA here and his physical limitations may simply be too much to overcome.

Okay, so they are going to put that elite defender Marquis Daniels on J.J. to stop him. Now, who are they going to put on McGrady and Yao???

I have a feelin Redick could turn into a player just like Kirk Hinrich..a 3pt shooter who plays PG and SG......i'm 50-50 over JJ as our draft pick

So lets say Dallas doubles Yao and leaves Daniels on JJ, that means McGrady is open or has a 1on1 matchup. Thats what we want. Lets say they double TMac that and leaves Daniels on JJ, that meand Yao or Swift is 1on1 or wide open at the basket. More than likely they aren't going to bring the PG to help on those doubles, so JJ is likely to be the guy wide open all of the time.

Do you remember the series against dallas in '05? What was Dallas's strategy in game 7... shut down everyone else but let McGrady and Yao get theirs. And do you know why our roleplayers were so easy to shut down ... because with the exception of Mike James they were slow, short and one dimensional ... they couldn't create their own shot because the Mavs stayed with them on defense. The result ... the worst loss in rocket history. I don't know about you but I don't ever want to see that strategy again.

Yao and McGrady alone can not score enough points together to win a game. It is too much to ask of them. They need contribution from roleplayers who are quick, long, and versatile that can create offense and defend by themselves without help. JJ Redick would be a welcomed addition to the Rockets if they already had versatile players on the roster. But the fact of the matter is the Rockets have one of the worst collection of non-versatile players in the nba that they can not afford to go after a JJ Redick in my opinion.

a coach's son who played PG in high school and has always maintained his preferred position is PG.

as for jon barry, the guy knows how to flop smartly, and he flops like crazy.

Good point! Much has been made about JJ having a hard time getting off his own shot. Depending on who's still available when we pick I think JJ would be a good addition. He's about as proven a player as any in the draft right now and he can do the one thing we lack most: shoot. I know our foot speed and perimeter defense will not improve with him on the floor, but we have no shooting right now.

I feel we should draft M. Williams if he's still available when we pick. Rafer is just not a starting PG and PG is the most important position on the floor. If Williams is gone JJ wouldn't be a bad pick because our entire backcourt is in shambles.

Don't say Rodney Carney can do that.

Game 7 vs. Dallas was just a complete disaster from every standpoint. We weren't compaining about those thinks in gms. 1,2 and 6. Yao couldn't stay on the floor was the reson we didn't win that series. Our role players like Barry and Sura and James were great in gms 1-6. We had a huge hole where Howard was missing. Bowen and Padgett were zeros on the court for us in that series. Man I still have a bad taste in my mouth after that series. Especially after coming home up 2-0 and having the kind of regular season they had. They may not have won a playoff series, but that was a heck of a seson. I can't wait for us to get another shot at the playoffs.

I never said he would because I never mentioned him in my post. Carney is not even my first choice with the number 8 pick.

I read on yahoo i think that the celtics and rox were impressed with reddick and were surprised by his D. Seems like he did really well in the workout.

is it just me, or does reddick kind of sound like mike james. their both bragging and saying they are worth alot. like in every thing i read, reddick is saying he is realy realy good in this or that way. and all the ppl that bash james, they don't bash reddick. i would be more happy with james cause hes a veteran and can play DEFENSE. reddick in the other hand, can shoot better, but thats all he can do. i rather draft sheldem williams, brewer, carney, or anyone that drops that was thought to be the top 5 (roy, thomas, morrison, etc.)

There is a difference between thinking you're Jesus and saying you're a competitor and will contribute to teams.

nah, JJ doesn't go around radio stations talkin about being a bad mofo pitbull. Saying how he's a superstar. JJ's quotes are more of "These guys don't think I can play, so I'm going to prove them wrong". Which is really good.

Not at all. Ronnie Brewer. If the Rockets go swingman (SG SF PG skills) with the lottery pick I think Brewer could turn out to be a real good player for them.

No, but he did say this:
    http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,635211719,00.html
"I think it's stupid, I don't think a guy would be consensus national player of the year, two-time first-team all-American, (Atlantic Coast Conference) all-time leader scorer if he couldn't just flat-out play. Especially coming from a program like Duke. I'm from Duke read my poetry, suck my... and I hate Yao!"

i may have made up that last bit in italics :D

JJ Redick wants to prove guys wrong who say he can't play......sounds a bit like a certain Houston native quarterback...... He ended up going #3 overall. People didn't bash Vince Young when he said those kinds of things.

Also, Mike James needs the ball in hands to be effective,he is not really the catch and shoot kind of guy. More of a shoot first PG than SG. Even so i'd like to have a backcourt of James at PG, Redick at SG. Shooting and scoring, just what ails us.

I think Brewer would be a better fit than Redick if we have James at "PG". Brewer could take on point forward responsibilities (which is one of his strong points) to create looks for everybody. I don't think James would fare too badly in a catch and shoot situation. We would also have height and defense in the back court, which we would lack with a redick/james combo.

I don't see us getting James anyway...dude wants to get paid.
