Makes more sense in his case. He has a huge buyout, so why pay that to go somewhere you don't want to be...and that will limit your marketability.
You know if he goes back to spain because he just doesn't want to play in Minny....then screw this kid. You can't pick and choose where you want to play, NBA is a privilege. If it's for other reasons, buyout clause, or whatever...then fine.
Why our we chasing this guy? Will he make this team that much better? I don't get it... feels like a hunt for another cash cow.
He won't make this team better immediatly....but long term he absolutely will make the rox a much better team.
With Yao' injury problems, Artest and Battier getting up in age. This team can't wait a couple years.
Yeah, pretty brash & he talked about playing time. And he doesn't want to play in Minny. There are a lot of similarities to Franchise here & that is scarry. One wonders if this kid is a 'Rocket,' you know-the character guys that seem to be a staple in all Houston Pro Sports. And, really, that is the biggest risk here. This kid's head is just that. And it remains to be seen of he will respond to the 'Rockets Way' or go to the Super Bowl Party & catch up later. But make no mistake, The Kid is Touched by Greatness. And Morey is trying to make him a Rocket as we speak.
I disagree with brooks and lowry already here you can afford to wait on rubio especially if you can manage to grab an andre miller or mike bibby in fa assuming you trade brooks.
Yeah, but it's a job afterall. If you apply for a job and they tell you they're going to pick when you're sent off to, how does it look if once you're sent off you complain? I could understand applying and saying, "well i do have a problem going to this area for this reason", then maybe the employer will work with you instead of you putting them in an awkward position. Rubio should have come straight out and said where he didnt want to play, he wouldn't have slipped too far and ended up where he wanted. The good thing is Minny didnt draft him to keep him so they weren't inconvenienced by this. so i'm not knocking him for not liking a certain area or for not wanting to play there, but i am knocking him for not being more considerate of the whole process. In "real life" once he signs himself into a job, he has two options, deal with it, or be fired. Unfortunately the NBA will bend over backwards to accomodate him, that's just the life of an NBA player....yes i am jealous , but seriously, that's how franchises get scrwed long term sometimes, just look at Memphis, as a fan, i wished the NBA had stricter rules about this, especially when players already on a team demand a trade, they should be given a paycut or something..
You are right, you have to have a star to build around, Rubio could be this guy and we have a chance to get him. I hope Morey can do something to get him.
That's the thing. If he is traded into a bigger market(houston ) with better endorsements he would be able to pay to terminate his DKV Joventut contract and would be able to play in the NBA.
I think Morey is feeling that there is a low chance he can depend on Yao/Tracy to take us to the promiseland now. He is now looking for another star, so he is swinging for the fences.
exactly, Rubio as an individual player may eventually get better, but as a team, we don't have a large window anymore......i think there's still a chance we get him just to trade him..
oh in terms of his buyout he has to pay for it himself and that includes his nba contract so the team that has him has to front load his rookie contract and possibly pay him a bit more to do that. I think thats why the grizzlies and sac passed on him because they would have to pay like 6.6 million to a rookie and both those teams are looking to shed cap space. I believe the CBA has a pay structure for first round picks so only so much of that amount could be paid out in a front loaded contract the rest needs to come from some other thing, an endorsement deal or something.
Even if we did get him I honestly would want him to still play 2 more seasons overseas. Because he does have the potential to be great...but physically he's not ready yet...and theres plenty of veteran pg's available in trade or FA that could run this team for a couple of seasons.
He's 18 years old. If he's a franchise player he can help a team for the next 14 years. That's room for multiple championship windows with a few seasons of mediocrity inbetween. If you could get an 18 year old Kobe Bryant on this team right now, knowing full well he wouldn't reach his potential for at least four years, would you do it? You can't be so focused on the short-term, this franchise will exist long after Yao, Artest, and Battier are gone.
I see it differently Morey is working to get & keep Rubio It would make no sense to split this team up to give Minny the best offer to get Rubio and then to be at the mercy of another team's roster of talent, question marks, overpaid primas and whatnot in flipping Rubio If we get him, He is a Rocket And that's fine w/me
That's not a great argument against a top 5 lottery pick vs Brooks or Lowry. Sure, he's not good as Blake Griffin. I would love to have the 2nd best player in the draft, instead of making due with 2nd round draft picks. He blew off Memphis. They aren't going to sign a player, who is not interested in playing for them. http://blogs.commercialappeal.com/the_memphis_edge/2009/06/no-memphis-visit-planned-for-rubio.html OKC just drafted a PG, last year. They didn't need another one. Sacramento would have done fine with either Evans or Rubio.
The team is built to win right now, not wait years down the line. Years down the line, we'll just be doing the same thing. Putting together pieces that went to old like Battier and Artest, I'm not saying their irreplaceable down the line... but if Yao is gone also. Its not every year there is a big man available that could possibly bring you a championship.
