Nah, Minnesota loved Flynn. That's who they wanted. However, I don't think they expected Rubio to slip to fifth, so they selected him because they probably felt they could get a lot of value in return for him, and they won't have to pay Flynn as much if he's 6th instead of 5th. Why they picked Ty Lawson, however, is unknown.
I didn't know anything about this kid until I saw some of the clips yesterday during the draft. He's like a Steve Nash/Jason Kidd. Great Great court vision. Just needs to put on some muscle, and he has the time since he's only 18. In a couple of years, he's going to be something special. I'd love to have him but we need a person to complimentary piece to make us win a championship!
I see nothing wrong with a player deciding to not report if he isn't happy with where he was drafted. It's his $$, his career, his choice. If I was from a foreign country and didn't like the place I was going to spend the majority of my days...and I had other options then I might stay overseas as well. Especially when I have to pay millions to buy out my contract. How can you knock a kid for that?
Was he? I didn't really follow any other teams too much, I was just floored that Minnesota picked 3 PG's in the early first round. I figured they had one in mind (Flynn), and were prepared to ship the other two off (Lawson, Rubio). It makes sense, at least.
All you people pointing out his flaws are just funny. Why do you think he fell to no 5 in the first place? If he had the all the tools and skills then teams 1 thorugh 4 would be all over him. My reason to go after him is that even with all his deficiencies, he is smart high IQ player and has great court vision to distribute the ball. All the other things he can still work on because he is only 18 and has ton of room to grow. Every draft has one of these players that stand out above the rest after 2-3 years. We saw that with Chris Paul at #4 and Brandon Roy at #6. Rubio is that guy this year. Morey needs to make a move and get him and stash in for the future.
Lawson was selected for Denver not for themselves. http://www.nba.com/2009/news/06/25/wolves.lawson.ap/index.html Flynn is insurance for Rubio staying in Europe. Minnesota has to convince Rubio to play for a small market team. If they can't do it, they will trade him and Flynn will have the PG spot. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ba...o-s-father-says-son-may-remain?urn=nba,172985
It's acutally pretty intelligent what the T'Wolves did. They new this was a draft loaded with PG's that other teams without a 1st round pick wanted so they decide to select 3 knowing that other teams will be willing to offer a little more just to get their hands on the PG they targeted. If we get a hold of Rubio is he still gonna want to go back to Spain? Or that's just a way to get out of Minny?
I hope so. The rockets seem to love pouncing on lottery PGs that don't want to play for their team. Steve Francis.
just to add some more fuel to this Rubio WILL NOT be at the Wolves Press conference today when they introduce their rookies link
Part of the reason might be that he's already developing a reputation for being high maintenance. The kid was yapping about getting minutes before he was even drafted.
T'Wolves need a wing player. I hope at least one of our picks can play well in this summer league. So, we can trade him + brooks + a future 1st round pick for Rubio.
Damn! OK. Rub is fo sho bein' traded now How long do you think it will take for a deal to be reached?
he dropped and those first 4teams werent all over him because of those flaws that are being pointed out...... one thing to take into consideration is, when he's criticized for his age, his supporters say he's been aplying so long he's mature and very posied for his age....but when he's criticized for his lack of a developed jumper, then his supporters say oh he's young he'll develop it later Well if he's played since he was a baby and then as a pro for so long, why hasn't he got around to developing his jumper? How exactly is getting older going to improve it? He's already tall, so that's not what is affecting his J, so growing more probably won't help. His shot is a set shot, and he can reach the rim easily without jumping, so i dont think he has trouble with arm strength, so getting older and filling out/getting stronger probably won't make a difference either.......he's probably played as much as most 23 yr old American players do, so i'm not sure why more people aren't concerned that he has developed a J yet, and expect he will later? Also, it's a possibility that his playing window is shifted down since he'll have more wear and tear over the years than even the American players who go to the NBA from high school. He's been a pro since almost middle school, so this guy may be having wear and tear issues before he even gets to the age of 30.
