I think money is always a driving force. Why did yao opt in? He could have did the team a great service by signing a reduced deal to give the team flexibility, but he didn't. I think its cool to see guys in their prime team up to win a ring vs when they're older. If these guys went to college for 3 yrs like barkely, jordan, and dream, they would be 30 yrs old and at that stage you're talking about. the fact they came out really early, bt are still 7 yrs deep in the league, they are showing they want to win. It wouldve been real easy for james, bosh, and wade to just stay with their respective teams.

Kevin Garnett did it before the 2003-04 season. He told the Wolves that he would take less than max money if they brought in better players. Next thing you know, Latrell Sprewell and Sam Cassel signed with the team, and Garnett kept his word.

Granted, it was only about $1-2 million less per year than his previous deal, but he still took less money for a better shot at winning the championship.

my view is initially it's the only driving force, whether you have a chance to win or not....once they're in the league for a few years, like now, it's the driving force, but on a team they think they can win or build a winner....later winning becomes the driving force since they have a really fat bank account, but not rings on their finger.

If you look at these meetings going on, it's only a way to gather up sign and trade scenarios for their current teams. There's no way any of these FAs dont know what teams have to offer, as far as coaching, teammates, history, etc. They all pretty much know where they want to go. If they were trying to just win they'd sign directly like a lot of FAs do later in their careers, but they still have money as a higher priority, otherwise they'd skip the chit chat and just wait and sign the papers on jul1.

Everyone keeps underestimating the influence the agents have on these fellows. The bigger the contract value, the more the agents make. They also rake in a percentage of the endorsements and the like. I guess the agents will be frantically calculating which option is going to garner the most bread for their client and, of course, themselves.

If Wade, James, and Bosh forego a sign and trade in order to play together in Miami, James and Bosh are kissing away $30 million bucks (and millions for their agents) each. Does the compensation from endorsement money, etc., more than make up for that? Is James going to suck up an inordinate amount of the available cash, not only in the market area of the team, but nationally? Worldwide? In Wade's case, I don't think it does. Wade can also sign with his own team, so he would be getting a larger paycheck than the other two, unless he offers to take the same amount. Wade is also doing very well nationally with endorsements. We've all seen the bazillion commercials he's made with Sir Charles. Bosh, on the other hand, is very likely, in my opinion, to make less being the third banana to James and Wade, then he would if he played in New York, Chicago, or Houston, where he would be the Top Dog, or the second puppy if James or Wade goes there.

Does that make sense? Of course, the players can, if they are strong willed, tell their agents what they want to do and that is that. We shouldn't dismiss what may be happening behind the scenes with their agents, though, while guessing what might happen soon.

Um, Wade is resigning. Lebron, for all his talk, has a good chance to resign. He also may get more endorsement money elsewhere, as his NBA salary likely matters the least among players today.

And for Bosh, max in Toronto sucks big time compared to max elsewhere? Because he actually can go elsewhere in S&T so Toronto won't lose him for nothing? Because he's in freaking TORONTO after growing up in warm weather Texas? Sure, money talks, but when the money differential isn't that big because you pay so much taxes, and there are gazillion other reasons that makes Toronto suck... that's different from Houston vs Miami.

So why hasn't Bosh signed a MLE contract yet with the Lakers?

[/QUOTE] And as Lee pointed out that's the prime motivator in their lives if they want to be considered amongst the game's elite.
After all, would you rather be remembered as a Kobe Bryant or as a John Stockton?

KG's contract was pretty ridiculous at the time. And when I say ridiculous, I mean he was taking up like half their capspace, one of the few mega-contracts left from before last CBA. So him taking 1-2 mil less is hardly the same as missing $30 mil guaranteed from your biggest contract.

Actually, the example I actually remember would be Stockton willing to stay in Utah despite getting huge offers elsewhere.

Has this been posted anywhere or does it need it's own thread?

"Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo told a Toronto radio station he thinks Bosh “likely” will leave the team. Should Bosh decide to sign elsewhere, Colangelo also said the Raptors will try to engage in a sign-and-trade deal to bring the franchise some measure of compensation.

Sources said the Raptors will try to acquire draft picks and young players in return for Bosh. They would likely ask for forward Michael Beasley(notes) and point guard Mario Chalmers(notes) in any deal with the Miami Heat. If Bosh were to go to the Chicago Bulls, the Raptors like forward Taj Gibson(notes) and center Joakim Noah(notes), though Noah could prove impossible to pry from Chicago. If Bosh settles on the New York Knicks, the Raptors would try to engage in a double sign-and-trade that sends Knicks forward David Lee(notes) to Toronto.

Sources called a potential sign-and-trade with the Los Angeles Lakers “doubtful.”

Looks like we're still flying under the radar...

But is there ANY team with potentially great draft picks and upsdie-laden youngsters ready to be dealt for Bosh?

Heh heh. Get 'er done, Daryl.

You can be bright without college, in much the same way that college doesn't necessarily help stupid people become less stupid.

That's the wish list for the Raptors. For example, no way in hell does Chicago give up Noah when they can sign the dude outright. I just don't see how these teams can expect to receive a lot in a S&T when so many teams can sign dudes outright. Even the Sonics only got a 2nd rounder and a fat TE when only 2 teams could sign Lewis.

Daryl Morey talks about Yao, and perhaps gives a preview of his sales pitch to Bosh:

    Hmm

Aaron Brooks, Patrick Patterson and 2012 NY pick should suffice IMO.
    ....

I feel Aaron would provide much needed scoring in their back court.

While Patrick Patterson, I feel should be dealt because they have no need for Jordan Hill, given that they have a pretty identical player in Ed Davis. Patterson would give them a more roughed and tough front line, that could mesh well with Davis and Bargnani. Also there were rumors on draft night that Patterson was probably going to be the Raptors pick, hadn't not been for Ed Davis dropping out of the top 10.

Plus, there would be no room for Patterson in our front line with the possible addition of Bosh, and the resigning of Scola. Unless we play him at back-up "C" and that ain't happening!
