^ Yeah, I see where you're coming from. And people, it's not 'odd' that the Rockets picked up the option on Hayes. Nobody knows how Yao will fare or how many minutes he's gonna get next season. IF the Rockets don't end up trading for Bosh, who's our backup C? Hayes next year adds depth and/or a trade piece. Nothing 'odd' about it at all and it doesn't necessarily signal he's getting traded. Because even if we do trade for Bosh, again, look at our frontcourt. Kinda thin at C, and unless the Rockets draft a big, we can't really rely on him to be a key rotation big
It was mentioned that waiving Hilton Armstrong during the season keeps the Rockets from resigning him for matching salary filler for trades, a-la Keith Van Horn in the Jason Kidd trade. I'd suck if somehow a move like that kept the Rockets from making a good trade lol. Maybe they can already do that with Brent or Jon Barry though. If Hayes stays on the team I'd like to see him at his more natural position guarding 4s off the bench, not centers and Paul Pierce.
This. The Rockets don't NEED Hayes to match salaries. They can use Andersen for the same purpose. They apparently want to keep Hayes because he is an asset to this team. One that Les apparently is willing to pay up to $4.66M to retain. Sure, if Toronto demands his inclusion in a trade package, so be it. But I don't think he's being re-signed FOR trade purposes.
Agreed, but he is being resigned as an asset, either to play, to trade, or to have in their back pocket. And to say that Andersen covers Hayes is a bit disingenuous, as they might need both Hayes AND Andersen's contract, and the other team or trading partner might want the $5 million broken up into 2 smaller contracts which they in turn can move. I think the Rockets like Hayes, who doesn't? But they also know that letting an expiring contract walk, in a year in which teams are probably going to be aggressively shedding contracts to prepare for the new CBA would be a dumb move. Glad they kept him, or intend to. DD
They wouldn't be saving 4 million dollars of salary because they couldn't get anyone that does what he does for that much. People that can defend bigs don't grow on trees.
DD - Where did you get $4MM? The sources I've seen all state Chuck's option for next year is $2.3 million.
Good to hear he will be sticking around. I've liked Hayes since his KY days. He obviously won't help the backup center offensive problem, but he's always shown very good defense. Plus he's probably the most stylish guy on the team.
We have to pay double his salary due to us being over the luxury tax. Say for instance, I sign with the Rockets as a bench warmer for 500 grand, Les will be 1 million dollars lighter.
This offseason should be a Great Opportunity for Hayes to R & R and when ready... Practice and Improve his O-Fence and FT via Hakeem, Sikma, etc... and Increase his Vertical so he can Finish Stronger in the Paint with Dunks and to Thwart big man jump shooters. A more Balanced Game by Chuck will make him a Better Player, help Rockets WIN more games, Invigorate his Fans, and get him paid handsomely the year after
